I Married the President

Chapter 99: Chapter 99: Just How Thick-Skinned Is This White Lotus?

When the two returned to the office, their arms full of food, Phoebe Lockwood was back as well. She was currently in the middle of the office, smugly bragging.

”President Helmanro is such an amiable and gentlemanly man. I asked to take a photo with him, and he didn’t refuse me at all. He even looked at the picture and kept complimenting me on how pretty I was.”

Her colleagues all looked on with envy, and the requisite ass-kissing soon followed.

”Wow, Lockwood, you’re so impressive! You got to meet President Helmanro in person! That’s an honor previously reserved for the First Lady.”

”Lockwood, you’re so young and you’ve already met President Helmanro. You have a limitless future ahead of you!”

”That’s right! Maybe you’ll become a cabinet member like your father. I’ll definitely vote for you then.”

...

Seeing this scene, Claire Sinclair scoffed.

Holloway suddenly shouted, ”Everyone, the takeout’s here! Lunchtime!”

”Finally, we can eat! I’m starving.”

”What’s good today?”

”I want the braised chicken and potato rice!”

Their colleagues swarmed over, each grabbing a lunch box before walking away.

In the blink of an eye, only three lunch boxes were left.

Holloway took two of them—one for himself and the other for Editor-in-Chief Summers.

Just as Claire Sinclair was about to grab the last one, a perfumed hand reached out, its scent instantly overpowering the aroma of the food.

Phoebe Lockwood picked up the lunch box, a deceptively innocent smile on her face. ”This smells delicious. The food at our agency is pretty good.”

Claire Sinclair: ”...”

’What a shameless, two-faced woman.’

Just as she was about to speak, Editor-in-Chief Summers suddenly said, ”Lockwood, that one is for Claire. You said in yesterday’s meeting that you’d be with Governor Lockwood to receive President Helmanro, so we didn’t order a meal for you in the budget.”

”Oh?” Phoebe Lockwood feigned surprise and embarrassment. ”Is that so? I’m so sorry. Here, Claire Sinclair, you can have it.”

With that, she handed the lunch box to Claire Sinclair.

Just as Claire Sinclair’s hand was about to touch the box, Phoebe Lockwood’s hand suddenly ”slipped,” and the lunch box fell to the floor.

The lid flew off, and the mushroom and pork rice scattered across the floor, its rich aroma filling the air.

Phoebe Lockwood immediately put on an exaggerated expression and cried out, ”Oh! I’m so sorry, I didn’t do it on purpose! It’s all on the floor. Can it still be eaten?”

Claire Sinclair stared coldly at the two-faced drama queen, a small flame of rage igniting in her heart.

’Anyone with eyes could see she did it on purpose.’

”Phoebe Lockwood, you must be pretty happy with yourself, right? Now that the food is ruined, neither of us gets to eat.”

”Uh, how could you say that? I really didn’t do it on purpose.”

”Whether you did it on purpose or not, you’re the one who dropped it. Pick it up, and then mop the floor clean.”

Claire Sinclair’s tone brooked no argument, carrying the air of a queen.

Phoebe Lockwood froze, then became furious herself.

’That damn bitch! How dare she order me, the governor’s daughter, to mop the floor? Who the hell does she think she is?!’

”Oh, excuse me, my father just called for me. I have to go, so if you’ll excuse me.” After saying that, Phoebe Lockwood tried to make a run for it.

The moment she turned, she felt a sharp tug on her hair. Someone had grabbed it, and the pain forced her to halt and whip her head around to glare.

She saw Claire Sinclair, her face dark, clutching the ends of her hair. Through gritted teeth, Claire said:

”Phoebe Lockwood, you think having a governor for a father makes you special? Does your governor father eat? Where do you think that food comes from? Farmers break their backs in the fields to grow it. Wasting food is trampling on the fruits of their hard labor. It’s a sin, and you’ll be cursed for it. Pick it up. Maybe then God will forgive your ignorance and stupidity. Pick it up now. Understand?”
