I Married the President

Chapter 65: Chapter 65: Bumped

People would kill to get into the Astoria Daily, yet the governor’s daughter gets a spot with a single phone call. The world truly is unfair.

Phoebe Lockwood finished gathering her things and was about to leave when she suddenly remembered something. She turned her head to look at Claire Sinclair. ”You’re Claire Sinclair, right? Just you wait.”

After that cryptic remark, she turned and walked away.

Claire Sinclair looked utterly baffled. ’It seems like she just threatened me...’

’Seriously, when have I ever done anything to offend that woman?’

A few moments later, Henry Hartwell, the editor who had just interviewed her, walked in. He casually sat down across from her and laced his fingers together.

”Claire Sinclair, I’m afraid I have some bad news for you.”

Claire Sinclair’s heart sank. She asked anxiously, ”Don’t tell me you’re not hiring me?”

Henry Hartwell smiled apologetically. ”Personally, I like you a lot. You’re sincere, driven, and good-tempered—perfectly suited for our line of work. But I’m sure you’re aware of the nature of our newspaper.

Sometimes, the higher-ups give us special assignments, and we have to make decisions that are out of our hands. For example, we just received a call. They’re assigning two people to our paper...”

He paused, looking up at the disappointment on the young woman’s face. ”One is an editor, and the other is an intern reporter. They’ve taken both my spot and yours. But I don’t want to lose a talent like you.

So, I’d like to ask if you’d be willing to temporarily join me in the entertainment section as my assistant. Even though I’m no longer the editor of the content department, I’m willing to teach you everything I know.”

”Huh?” Claire Sinclair was confused.

’If I’m understanding this correctly,’ she thought, ’does this mean Editor Hartwell has been demoted?’

Henry Hartwell smiled. ”That’s the gist of it. You can go home and think it over. Just give me an answer by tonight. Here’s my card.”

With that, Henry Hartwell handed her a business card.

Claire Sinclair took the card but couldn’t help asking, ”Editor Hartwell, aren’t you angry about this at all?”

Henry Hartwell shrugged it off. ”I never became a reporter for the title. I just enjoy the work.”

With that meaningful remark, Henry Hartwell stood up, gave her one last look, and turned to leave.

’Just enjoy the work, huh?’

In that instant, Claire Sinclair made up her mind. She called out to the stout man’s retreating figure, ”Editor Hartwell, I’ve thought it over! I’m in!”

Henry Hartwell stopped and slowly turned around, giving her a pleasant smile. ”Great. Report to the Entertainment Department tomorrow at nine in the morning. And from now on, call me Teacher Hartwell. I’m not an editor anymore.”

”Teacher Hartwell...” ’The name had a nice ring to it.’

Henry Hartwell turned and walked away.

Claire Sinclair gathered her belongings and left the Astoria Daily Press.

...

「That night.」

After finishing dinner and washing the dishes, Claire Sinclair walked into the living room and took out Henry Hartwell’s business card.

She saved his number in her phone and was about to head upstairs to bed.

Just as she stood up, she heard a noise at the front door.

Claire Sinclair froze. ’Could that be Adrian Quincy coming home?’

Speak of the devil.

Adrian Quincy walked in from outside, stopping at the doorway to change his shoes.

Claire Sinclair couldn’t help but ask, ”Mr. Quincy, you’re back? Have you had dinner?”

”Is there anything to eat in the house?” Adrian Quincy asked in return.

Claire’s heart fluttered, and she was suddenly overjoyed. ”What would you like? I’ll make it for you right away!”
