Chapter 2448: Chapter 2449: I’ll Leave the Rest to You

Bai Ruozhu immediately understood the situation - Sa Tian had already received a call for help from the monks at Zhaoti Temple, and when Master Puru met the second prince, there must have been very few people around. It was hard to know what the second prince’s condition was.

”Let’s discuss this further once we’re back.” Bai Ruozhu’s expression was somewhat grave, but she quickly flashed a faint smile. ”Don’t let any flaws show on the way back; as of now, we know nothing.”

”Understood.” The others felt the gravity of the situation, and each of them perked up.

Upon returning to the Posthouse, Bai Ruozhu made a few simple arrangements, pondering whether or not to secretly visit Zhaoti Temple.

Soon enough, Jiang Yichun hurried back, but Gao Zhou didn’t accompany him.

”My father is still keeping watch over there; the second prince is dead.” Jiang Yichun whispered.

The crowd gasped collectively, Bai Ruozhu and Jiang Yichun exchanged a glance — this matter was certainly bizarre!

The Brocade Pouch that Puru received was meant to confirm whether the second prince could ascend the throne, but confirmation didn’t mean killing him. Even if Puru had malicious intents, now that he’s severely burned — not to mention the guards by the second prince’s side — even alone, Puru wouldn’t be a match for the prince.

”Isn’t the second prince too much of a scapegoat here?” Tang Feng couldn’t help but cover his forehead, ”Previously, I saw him behaving quite arrogantly, and I was worried he’d give us trouble once on the throne. Who knew he’d perish like this?”

Bai Ruozhu was also surprised, the second prince was certainly an exaggerated scapegoat.

”What’s the Emperor’s stance?” Bai Ruozhu inquired.

”The Emperor is sending people to investigate. He trusts Master Puru but is deeply grieved by his son’s death. He can only order the news to be temporarily blocked until everything is clarified.” Jiang Yichun’s face was somewhat serious, ”But Master Puru’s situation is precarious; the second prince met him alone, and died suddenly in Puru’s room. The prince’s maternal family is powerful, they likely won’t spare Master Puru.”

Bai Ruozhu took a deep breath, ”How did he suddenly die? I’ve met him twice before and didn’t notice any health issues.”

”I couldn’t see the body; Master Puru is also under guard. We still need to think of a way to get more details.” Jiang Yichun shook his head.

Bai Ruozhu quickly made up her mind, ”Once it gets dark, I’ll figure out a way to see Master Puru.”

”Master, this is too dangerous!” Jianqi immediately opposed.

Tang Feng knew Bai Ruozhu had Space powers, so he wasn’t too worried, just sensing that Bai Ruozhu knew more than she was letting on.

”Master Puru’s health hasn’t recovered; he’s likely unsafe now. Bearing in mind that he’s a contemporary of Master Pudeng, I wish to assist him somehow — we all owe Master Pudeng a debt of gratitude.” Bai Ruozhu sighed.

Jianqi could no longer object; the group expressed their willingness to follow Bai Ruozhu’s arrangements.

Based on the defense situation recently observed at the temple, Jiang Yichun made simple plans. As night fell, the group donned black clothes, silently exited the Posthouse, and sneaked toward the back entrance of Zhaoti Temple.

Yuan Licheng and Qiu Zhi took the lead; they exchanged glances with Qiu Zhi throwing a talisman that transformed into the shape of a cat, creating disturbances to divert the patrolling guards. By the time the guards realized it was just a nocturnal cat, they were already ensnared in Yuan Licheng’s array, unknowingly circling in the vicinity.

Bai Ruozhu and Jiang Yichun quickly infiltrated the temple, soon reaching the outside of Master Puru’s room.

Sounds came from inside, ”Master, what is truly happening? Can you not speak honestly with me?”

It was the Emperor speaking, his voice hoarse and his words choked with emotion.

”I...” Master Puru hesitated, only if he discovered an issue with the next Emperor could he present the Brocade Pouch and request a change in the selection. Yet now must he take it out for the Emperor to see?

If he chose not to, it might be impossible to clear his name. Yet even if he did, he’d be defying his master’s orders — revealing such royal secrets could offer no proof of innocence, merely adding worry.

”Your Majesty, I was genuinely blessing the second prince and know not why he suddenly clutched his chest and collapsed. I suspect he was poisoned.” Master Puru stated.

”I have summoned several Imperial Doctors to examine, none found any signs of poisoning, instead they say his death is quite strange.” The Emperor shook his head, tears uncontrollably streaming down, ”As his father, I failed to protect him.”

”Your Majesty, please resign, I have never sought harm to the second prince’s life, and I hope Your Majesty quickly finds the true culprit.” Puru coughed, his health not fully recovered and exhausted from the day’s events, he felt weak.

Bai Ruozhu listened anxiously, yet it was inadvisable to rush in now, fortunately, the Emperor seemed fatigued and soon left the room sighing.

Guarded at the entrance, it was difficult for Bai Ruozhu and Jiang Yichun to enter, ultimately Bai Ruozhu had Xiaomao create illusions to confuse the guards while Tang Feng and the others monitored the vicinity, allowing her and Jiang Yichun to enter the room.

Master Puru looked up at the noise, seeing Bai Ruozhu, his face lit with surprise but quickly turned to concern.

”How did you get here? This is too dangerous!”

”Let’s not discuss that now; we’re short on time. Quickly, explain the situation.” Bai Ruozhu urged.

Master Puru didn’t hide the truth from Bai Ruozhu. On one hand, she had aided him, and on the other, he trusted Bai Ruozhu and her wedded partner’s character. With them soon departing Fusang, they would bear no connection with the Imperial Family.

”I tested as the Brocade Pouch said, the second prince was problem-free. This was good news, I merely intended to return the Brocade Pouch, ending this matter, but unexpectedly the prince spoke to me, suddenly began shaking all over, lost consciousness, and fell to the ground.” Puru’s voice was low, speaking with difficulty, ”Only he and I were in the room, it’s impossible for me to explain.”

”Where is the body kept at the temple?” Bai Ruozhu hurriedly asked, suspecting the prince either died from poison or a curse — viewing the body was necessary for confirmation.

”In the Side Hall, but the Emperor is personally guarding it, with many samurai and ninja present, it’s too risky for you to approach.” Master Puru advised.

Bai Ruozhu contemplated, handing a vial of medicine to Master Puru, ”Take care of your health first, take this medicine, I’ll feign illness tomorrow for an opportunity to check the body.”

”That’s a good idea; do not mention the Brocade Pouch to the Emperor, with the second prince gone, we need to reevaluate candidates.” Puru said, suddenly handing the Brocade Pouch to Bai Ruozhu, ”If anything happens to me, I’ll leave it to you.”

”We’re leaving soon; how can we help you? You must preserve yourself at all costs!” Bai Ruozhu fearfully urged, worried Puru might despair.

”I’ll strive to survive, but the token is unsafe with me now, I entrust it to you.” Puru spoke, pressing palms together in gratitude and deeply bowing to Bai Ruozhu.
