Chapter 2439: Chapter 2440: You Won’t Tell Anyone

”Yes, but Heavenly Silkworm Silk is extremely rare; I’ve only seen it once,” Jiang Yichun said.

Bai Ruozhu looked up at him, noticing a hint of melancholy in his eyes. She didn’t press him on where he had seen it; if he wanted to share, he would do so eventually. If not, she wouldn’t force him.

She reached out to open the Brocade Pouch, her hand icy cold, and inside was a piece of silk, densely written with many small characters.

”Upon receiving this letter, use the Wisdom Heart Technique to test before the new Emperor ascends the throne. If the technique reacts, the new Emperor’s ascension must be stopped.”

The silk was inscribed with Chinese characters, which Bai Ruozhu read aloud effortlessly.

”The key can be shown to the current Emperor. The person who reacts to the Wisdom Heart Technique undoubtedly possesses special abilities but will not live past thirty, thus cannot become Emperor.”

Bai Ruozhu and Jiang Yichun exchanged a glance; the Emperor’s family surely has something to do with the Merfolk!

Something must have occurred before, which is why Zhaoti Temple took on this responsibility to prevent a prince who wouldn’t live past thirty from becoming the new Emperor, thereby avoiding future political chaos.

”After the suitable Emperor has ascended, please seal this scroll and pass it on to future generations.”

The last line was written in small characters.

”Could it be that the Second Prince knows this secret and fears Master Puru will oppose his ascension with the key?” Bai Ruozhu speculated.

”That’s quite possible. Let’s notify Master Puru as soon as we can,” Jiang Yichun considered.

Bai Ruozhu frowned slightly, ”I really don’t want to get involved in the Fusang Country’s Emperor succession disputes.”

Jiang Yichun glanced at Master Pudeng’s golden figure in the distant forest, his voice low: ”Consider it repaying Master Pudeng’s kindness.”

Bai Ruozhu nodded, ”You’re right.”

...

Soon, news spread in Kyoto that some guards roasted deer at Zhaoti Temple, disrespecting Buddha, resulting in Buddha manifesting and giving them punishment.

By the time Bai Ruozhu and her companions heard this news, it was already the next morning, and Fo Lanying felt elated, laughing, ”Oh my, you’ve become the Buddha manifesting.”

Sa Tian entered the yard, just in time to hear those words, his face instantly becoming quite complicated.

He had learned that after Bai Ruozhu and her companions left Zhaoti Temple yesterday, they encountered guards roasting deer meat again, but Bai Ruozhu and her companions directly left. The guards thought Zhongyuan people feared reprimand from General Chisong and didn’t interfere.

But Sa Tian vaguely felt the matter was related to Bai Ruozhu and her companions, yet he was conflicted since he disliked those guards disrespecting the temple, but also felt things shouldn’t be hidden from the General.

Bai Ruozhu glared at Fo Lanying, reprimanding her for speaking without restraint, and warned that they had been overheard.

Fo Lanying stuck out her tongue and quickly hid aside.

Bai Ruozhu stared steadily at Sa Tian and asked, ”Will you report to General Chisong?”

Her voice was slightly raised, though a question, already carried a hint of denial, essentially saying: You won’t do it.

Sa Tian hesitated, his long-held beliefs suggesting he shouldn’t deceive the General, but thinking of his upbringing in a temple made him agree with Bai Ruozhu and her companions’ actions.

”They won’t face any mortal danger, will they?” Sa Tian asked after holding it in for a long time.

”Just diarrhea for two days; considering General Chisong’s face, why would I kill them?” Bai Ruozhu laughed mockingly.

Sa Tian quickly explained, ”The General previously rebuked them, forbidding further disrespectful acts at Buddhist temples. But Lord Luzhi punished Lord Xinye, so those guards beneath...”

”Simply because Xinye didn’t shield them?” Bai Ruozhu raised an eyebrow.

”That’s likely it; Lord Luzhi has quite a temper,” Sa Tian said, lowering his head and voice, ”Lady Bai, just now I didn’t hear anything, but please don’t do this again next time, or it will harm you.”

Bai Ruozhu saw Sa Tian’s sincerity and nodded, saying, ”Alright, it won’t happen again.”

Anyway, those people wouldn’t dare make trouble anytime soon, so naturally, she wouldn’t take further action.

Sa Tian remembered he had official matters, urgently taking out a piece of paper and handed it to Bai Ruozhu: ”Lady Bai, the content behind Shadow Ninja’s writing was translated.”

”Oh?” Bai Ruozhu took the paper, with an explanation in not-so-elegant Chinese characters.

The paper indeed required flipping to read, but the translated content offered little useful information.

Such as asking who were their masters, the Shadow Ninja answered they’d never met, only receiving orders from the Shadow Chief.

Only when asked about their hiding place did they reveal it was in the mountains twenty li north of Kyoto.

”Who translated this?” Bai Ruozhu asked.

”It was translated upon viewing by the Emperor,” Sa Tian said, ”It’s said each Emperor learns the symbols used to communicate with Shadow Ninja.”

Bai Ruozhu nodded, ”The Emperor likely wants to show their non-involvement. Presumably, both the Emperor and General have dispatched people to that location; we’ll just await updates.”

”Alright, I’ll inform you all if there’s news. Additionally...” Sa Tian paused, ”What’s he like?”

Bai Ruozhu felt Sa Tian still held hope, wanting to learn about his brother through the person, but how could that be discovered? Naming wouldn’t help; as a ninja, they only have code names. Describing appearance wouldn’t work; faces were disfigured during training, no one knows what they originally looked like.

”His poison has been cured, and if Xinye’s side can conceal it, he can follow us without issue,” Bai Ruozhu said.

”Thank you; General Xinye agreed with me,” Sa Tian finally smiled.

After Sa Tian bid farewell, Bai Ruozhu considered whether to inform the abbot of their findings, but she only visits Zhaoti Temple every three days. Visiting right after returning might arouse suspicion from those with ill intent, even making desperate moves against Master Puru.

Thinking this, she calmed down; there are nearly half a month before the Second Prince’s ascension. If they truly can’t prevent it, then it might be destiny.

”Let’s find a chance to go out for a stroll, say to buy some Fusang specialties to bring back home, while also inquiring about Diao Bin and my senior brother,” Bai Ruozhu discussed with Jiang Yichun.

”Great, understanding their customs and culture is good,” Jiang Yichun readily agreed.

Bai Ruozhu promptly informed the few young ladies, making everyone happy; it seems women across eras enjoy shopping.

Unpredictably, just as everyone prepared to go out, an envoy sent by the Emperor arrived at the Posthouse.

”Lady Bai, here’s an invitation card from the Emperor, please have a look.” The envoy respectfully presented the Invitation Card before Bai Ruozhu.
