Abandoned Woman Busy Farming

Chapter 2429: Chapter 2430: Midnight Shadow

Sometimes it’s like this: you just want to save people, but others may not believe you. It’s better to say something beneficial to yourself; that makes it easier for the other party to accept.

Xinye was silent for a while. ”Even if there was no trouble, you wouldn’t have let him die, right?”

Bai Ruozhu didn’t answer. She felt there was no need to say too much to someone unfamiliar, and the other party always had a faint hostility toward her.

Xinye saw her not speaking, and his slightly thin eyebrows furrowed.

”I heard from Sa Tian that you saw a suspicious monk during the fire. Do you remember any features?” Xinye asked after a while.

Bai Ruozhu saw that he was here on official business, and her displeasure subsided.

”It was too chaotic at the time, and I couldn’t see clearly. Now that I think about it, he had no ordination scars on his head,” Bai Ruozhu said. ”Otherwise, he looked no different from an ordinary monk. I only saw his profile, quite unremarkable.”

The situation was too sudden at the time, and the monk had a very common face. Bai Ruozhu only saw his profile, so she even doubted whether she would recognize the person if she met him again.

Xinye nodded. ”Since it happened, this place has been surrounded. Maybe the person is still hiding in the temple. I’ll send someone to search.”

A monk without ordination scars should be very obvious and easy to spot.

Watching Xinye leave, Bai Ruozhu suddenly remembered something, and said to his back, ”If the person is really cunning, even a bald head can wear a wig.”

She was afraid Xinye wouldn’t understand, so she pointed to her hair and said, ”A wig.”

Xinye saw her tugging at her own hair and immediately understood her meaning. But he also found her action amusing. Where had he ever seen a woman pulling at her own hair like that? The Fusang women he had seen all wore meticulously styled hair, wore exquisite kimonos, and took petite steps as they walked.

He turned and continued to walk forward, a slight smile unconsciously appearing on his face.

Not far away, Jiang Yichun walked through the yard gate and caught sight of Xinye, also noticing that hint of a smile.

”Do you have any business?” Jiang Yichun’s tone was not friendly and carried hostility.

”Routine inquiry,” Xinye replied simply, then continued forward, brushing past Jiang Yichun.

Jiang Yichun’s face darkened as if it were about to freeze over. As a man, he had his own intuition. That smile on Xinye just now made him feel very uneasy.

He walked up to Bai Ruozhu, put his arm around her shoulders, and the next second his expression softened; his voice became much gentler.

”What did he ask just now?”

”He asked about the features of the suspicious monk I saw. I can’t really remember anything; that person’s face was so ordinary. I just remember he had no ordination scars on his bald head.” Bai Ruozhu didn’t realize Xinye had smiled, nor did she know that Jiang Yichun had already marked Xinye as an enemy.

”He’s going to search, and I reminded him the person might wear a wig. Fortunately, he understood.” Bai Ruozhu shrugged her shoulders. ”I was this close to tearing off my own hair just to explain clearly.”

Jiang Yichun raised his head and helped her tidy up her bun. ”Never mind if he doesn’t understand. Don’t pull your own hair. Those people don’t know how to be grateful; it’s not worth helping them.”

Bai Ruozhu laughed. ”I just want to help Zhaoti Temple.”

He helped arrange her hair, only to find it still messy. So he simply took off her hairpin and helped her redo her hair.

When Gao Zhou entered the yard, he saw this beautiful scene and stopped in his tracks, not wanting to disturb such a warm moment.

He couldn’t help but think of Chushuang. He had also helped her with her hair in the past, though he had clumsy hands. As a former modern short-haired person, just tying his hair properly was an achievement.

So every time, it was crooked and messy, obviously very ugly, yet Chushuang never minded and even particularly liked it.

Gao Zhou sighed softly. Would he ever see Chushuang again in his lifetime?

”Dad, is there something you need?” Jiang Yichun’s voice interrupted his thoughts. It turns out he couldn’t help but sigh, and was heard by Jiang Yichun and the others.

He looked at the two of them. Bai Ruozhu’s hair was already redone, and she appeared much refreshed.

”Nothing, just thinking someone should keep watch here, worried Bai Ruozhu would get too tired,” Gao Zhou said as he walked over.

”You’ve also been busy all day. You should rest. There are many patients to see tomorrow.” Bai Ruozhu said.

”It’s alright, you go rest. Come and change with me in the morning.” Gao Zhou said.

Bai Ruozhu smiled. ”Really, no need. You’re quite old now, better not to stay up late. You and Achun go rest, I can handle it myself.”

Jiang Yichun thought about the smile on Xinye’s face just now. How could he be at ease leaving Bai Ruozhu here alone? But Bai Ruozhu gave him a look, signaling him to accompany Gao Zhou and talk.

Jiang Yichun noticed Gao Zhou seemed a bit down, so he reluctantly nodded and pulled Gao Zhou away.

”Who said I’m old? You little brat, how can you talk like that?” Gao Zhou shouted as his son dragged him away. ”I’m not even forty-five, I’m in the prime of my life!”

”Yes, yes, prime of your life, now hurry up and go, don’t disturb my patients.” Bai Ruozhu stifled a laugh. This person must be sixty if you add up both his lifetimes, yet he still isn’t mature.

Bai Ruozhu returned to Master Puru’s side, checked his wound and temperature again, confirmed everything was fine, and then closed her eyes to practice Qi.

After about two hours, she opened her eyes and applied medicine to Master Puru again, inserting needles. This took another half hour past.

Master Puru’s condition had improved a lot, at least he wasn’t feverish, but he would occasionally cough, having obviously inhaled a lot of smoke. Bai Ruozhu inserted needles to help regulate his lung meridian. Finally, around midnight, Master Puru suddenly woke up, coughing heavily and bringing up a lot of phlegm.

Bai Ruozhu gave him a cup of water with a dissolved green pill, and his condition improved significantly.

”Tha... Thank you!” Master Puru said with difficulty, his voice dry and raspy like sawing wood.

”Master, please don’t speak. You’ve inhaled too much smoke and your throat is injured. Focus on recovering, we’ll talk about everything else later,” Bai Ruozhu said.

Tears welled up in Master Puru’s eyes. ”Alright...”

He clutched Bai Ruozhu’s hand and started crying, seemingly unable to control his emotions. Bai Ruozhu felt something placed in her palm, her heart skipped a beat. She didn’t know Master Puru’s intention. Did he suspect there were others nearby, and so couldn’t directly hand it to her?

She calmly helped Master Puru lie back down, secretly giving him an ”all-clear” look, and then subtly turned her hand to store the item Master Puru gave her into her space.

In the end, Master Puru was too badly burned and soon fell back asleep.

Bai Ruozhu checked on the other two severely injured monks in the room. They were also badly burned, but faring better than Master Puru.

The night was deep and the moonlight was like water; outside, it was so quiet there was not a sound, as if even the wind had frozen.

At that moment, a faint shadow slowly moved towards the room...
