Chapter 2030: Chapter 2029: Doomed to Harm Husband and Parents

The onlookers threw things at Zheng Chunrong and Yang Laosan; Zheng Chunrong was so tormented she almost passed out.

Soon, she became a moving pile of trash, covered with rotten veggie leaves and sour soup — where was her once admired demeanor?

Yang Laosan kept his head down, seemingly enduring it silently.

Suddenly, Zheng Chunrong staggered and fell against Yang Laosan; an officer rushed over to pull her away, but Yang Laosan erupted, opening his wide bloody mouth, and bit Zheng Chunrong’s neck. He even bit into a piece of rotten veggie leave.

”What are you doing, let her go!” the officer beside shouted. Though she was about to be executed, if a convict dies before the execution, they would bear some responsibility.

The officer hurried to pull Yang Laosan, but he tightly bit Zheng Chunrong without letting go, emitting beast-like growling that unnerved the nearby officer.

After a while, Yang Laosan was finally pulled off; Zheng Chunrong slumped to the ground, and the onlookers saw a chunk of flesh bitten off her neck!

The crowd that was shouting to kill quieted down, with some retreating in fear; Yang Laosan was too ruthless.

The officer kicked Yang Laosan urgently, threatened him with a few words, and yanked Zheng Chunrong up, but her gaze was hollow, lacking the strength to cry or scream in pain.

Bai Ruozhu watched and shook her head, muttering: ”Why does Yang Laosan hate Zheng Chunrong so much? Even if he loved wrong, he shouldn’t be like this.”

Bai Zepei sneered, ”Because there’s something you don’t know. Originally, Yang Laosan was a confidant of the casino boss, even his sworn brother. But for the sake of Zheng Chunrong, he helped kill the boss who treated him like a brother. Discovering Zheng Chunrong had been using him all along, could he not hate?”

”He probably feels remorse towards his boss, and can only vent this emotion on Zheng Chunrong; clearly not a good person.” Bai Ruozhu pouted.

Si Yihuan covered her mouth beside them, muttering: ”I don’t want to eat meat for three days.”

Bai Zepei looked at his young wife, slightly regretting allowing her to watch the excitement. What’s interesting about beheading?

”Yihuan, you better go back.” He suggested, but Si Yihuan squeezed closer to him, appearing delicate and dependent.

”No, you promised to let me watch.” Si Yihuan murmured softly.

Bai Ruozhu pressed her lips and chuckled, wanting to find an excuse to dodge away, lest she becomes the third wheel.

Bai Zepei shook his head helplessly, not moving away from Si Yihuan — he wasn’t intentionally avoiding her; he was accustomed to her leaning close, without much thought.

Just as Bai Ruozhu worried about finding an excuse to escape, Jianqi suddenly approached, whispering: ”Master, Sun Dudu just jumped into the river outside the city but was fortunately saved.”

”What? Even if she wants to die, she should watch the tormenting beheading first; why so desperate?” Bai Ruozhu turned to her second brother, saying: ”I’ll go with Jianqi to check, we’ll meet back at the inn later.”

”Alright, be careful.” Bai Zepei advised.

Bai Ruozhu quickly pulled the still dazed Yizi, leaving the crowd of onlookers.

”What exactly happened?” she asked when they reached a less crowded area.

”Sun Dudu’s mother died a few days ago, leaving a massive debt, leading her to be recalled. Her father, whether too agitated or physically worn, suddenly had a heart attack the next day and died. Sun Dudu’s uncle said she was a jinx and blamed her for her husband’s and mother’s deaths, driving her out of the house, while they wouldn’t bear the debts; debt collectors then demanded she sell herself to repay them.” Jianqi explained briefly.

Bai Ruozhu couldn’t believe the fate of that round-faced girl, truly twisted by fate. How could her father’s excitement upon her return lead to a heart attack and death?

Escaping hell only to face forced prostitution again — no wonder she tried to drown herself.

Initially, she resented the girl for disregarding her newly acquired freedom and life; now knowing the details, she understood Sun Dudu’s despair.

”Let’s go help her.” Bai Ruozhu said.

Yizi wiped her eyes beside her, ”Yes, Master, she’s so pitiful.”

Pity aside, the girl’s virtuous character was why Bai Ruozhu chose to assist her.

The trio swiftly reached outside the city; Sun Dudu had jumped into the moat. Fortunately, many people had gone to watch the beheading, leaving few passersby outside.

Yet despite that, Sun Dudu’s wet clothes clung to her body, exposed to so many people; she cried and tried to bash herself to death.

Bai Ruozhu strode over and snatched her up.

”Since you chose to drown yourself, why care about reputation? Won’t your body be seen by others after death?” Bai Ruozhu said sternly.

Seeing her, Sun Dudu’s tense emotion suddenly relaxed, kneeling and loudly bawling.

”I don’t want to live. Heaven is unfair, leaving me no way, so I’d rather see my parents soon.” She cried.

”Who said you have no way?” Bai Ruozhu asked.

Sun Dudu paused, looking at Bai Ruozhu in surprise — was this lady going to help her?

”Since you’re forced to sell yourself, how about selling to me? At least I’d only want you to serve, without making you do anything against your will. As for your parents’ debt, I’ll help repay it first.” Bai Ruozhu said.

Yizi frowned beside her, wondering why Master, if she wanted to help, still required the girl to sell herself.

Sun Dudu quickly pondered, then kowtowed to Bai Ruozhu, ”I am willing, thank you madam for saving me once again!”

She cleverly referred to herself as ”maid,” indicating she accepted Bai Ruozhu as her mistress.

Bai Ruozhu instructed Jianqi to arrange paying off the Sun Family’s debts and take Sun Dudu home to gather her belongings, while she herself returned to the inn with Yizi.

”Master, you already have enough maids, right?” Yizi couldn’t fathom, pondering along the way and finally asking.

”Yes, so if this were a business deal, I’d incur a loss.” Bai Ruozhu chuckled, ”But if I generously helped pay off her debt, then what?”

Yizi paused, ”What do you mean afterward?”

Being an orphan raised by a master like a free spirit for over a decade, though learning some array techniques, she didn’t understand social norms, hence not comprehending Bai Ruozhu’s intentions.

”She lost her parents and was labeled a jinx by relatives without survival skills; how could she live thereafter? If spoken harshly, what if one day she got sold by relatives? Moreover, being seized and taken to a brothel affected her reputation — how would she marry in the future?”

Bai Ruozhu smiled, ”Helping clear her debt eases immediate woes, but aiding her continued survival is truly helping her.”
