Rebirth: General, Don't Mess Around!

Zhou Niannian, who was waiting for her reply, stood up immediately. She said anxiously, ”Then you—”

Ye Jian didn’t let her continue. She raised her hand and patted her shoulder lightly. ”Don’t be agitated. Lie down and listen to me.”

Ye Jian’s words made Zhou Niannian want to say something, but she should lie down obediently and listen to Ye Jian first.

”What’s the use of being afraid? If I were afraid, I wouldn’t have come. Niannian, did you see the Wall of Heroes?”

The Wall of Heroes… Zhou Niannian’s pupils constricted slightly. Then, she nodded slowly.

She saw it. The first time she saw it, she couldn’t move her feet. Those black and white photos were the strongest resistance against the darkness. Countless seniors sacrificed their lives to fight against the darkness to resist its invasion. Even if they weren’t around anymore, their fighting spirit and determination were passed down.

The living narcotics police officers were stepping into the shoes of those who had passed.

”This is a long and endless journey. You and I are the same. When we stepped on this path, we were destined to fight and be brave. There’s no turning back.

”I’m afraid too. I’m afraid that I’ll fall behind on the journey. I’m afraid that I’ll lose the chance to fight alongside my comrades. I’m afraid that I’ll completely disappear before I even start clearing any obstacles.

”Niannian, I have to be afraid. Only by being afraid will I know how precious my life is. Only by being afraid will I know that I have to come back alive. I don’t want to fall behind halfway. I don’t want to only have a photo to tell others what my journey was.

”I want to continue walking until I can’t carry a gun anymore. If we don’t attack the enemy, we’ll really reach the end of our lives.”

Her hand was held by another hand that was not soft but powerful. Ye Jian held her hand back. The two hands, which were smaller than a man’s, held each other tightly. Their fingers were slender, but they contained a power that many men couldn’t muster.

Zhou Niannian could relate to what Ye Jian said. Yes, she was afraid of danger too. However, just like what Ye Jian said, she was even more afraid of falling behind halfway. She was more afraid of not being able to fight through all the obstacles with her comrades. She didn’t want the darkness to destroy the peace of society.

She would always remember the oath she took on the first day she entered the police academy and the first day she was assigned to the SWAT team.

”I swear that I’m willing to become a police officer of China. I will devote myself to the noble cause of public security for the people. I will firmly be loyal to the party, serve the people, enforce the law justly, and be disciplined. I will always be the builder and defender of the socialist cause with Chinese characteristics. I will work hard to maintain the stability of society, promote social justice, and ensure that the people live and work in peace!”

Her goal and direction had already been decided. The journey was still ongoing. How could she fall behind?

Under the slightly thick cotton blanket, two slender hands held each other tightly. They had a common language, a common goal, and a common direction. That was why they could lie on the same bed without any sense of unfamiliarity after meeting just twice.

Ye Jian smiled as she looked at the girl with a solemn facial expression. Her clear voice was frighteningly calm. Slowly, she continued, ”It’s not a bad thing to be afraid. On the contrary, it’s a good thing. Think about it. Because we’re afraid, we won’t go astray, and we won’t lose ourselves.”
