Chapter 25: Chapter 25: A Dark Horse Appears! Director Huo Establishes Wu Ting’s Authority

For the next few days, aside from being on duty with Luo Ming and Qin Donglai, Wu Ting spent all his time writing his thesis outline.

Another Monday came, and Wu Ting finally finished his thesis outline.

Since Monday was traditionally the day for the director’s grand rounds, Wu Ting went to Director Huo’s office early in the morning before they began.

”Director Huo, I’ve finished my thesis outline. Could you take a look?”

Wu Ting handed the printed first draft to Director Huo.

Seeing Wu Ting’s proactive enthusiasm, Huo Yun was quite impressed. ”Not bad. You got the outline done in just a few days. Let me see.”

As a leading figure in Fan City’s emergency medicine field, Huo Yun had a sharp, experienced eye. Having reviewed countless papers, he began to meticulously examine Wu Ting’s outline.

The more he read, the more his brow unfurrowed.

”Good, very good. Wu Ting, the outline for your thesis is quite comprehensive and detailed.”

”Your theoretical framework, in particular—the purpose and significance—is profoundly articulated. You’ve also considered the current state of research both domestically and internationally. It’s clear you’ve put in a lot of work.”

Huo Yun flipped to the next page and continued his commentary:

”Hmm, the research subjects, study type, sample size calculation, sampling and grouping methods... your technical roadmap and assessment tools, in particular, are discussed with great professionalism and detail.”

”For the National Medicine symptom scoring part, did you consult Director Huang Hong?”

Huo Yun placed great importance on his doctors’ comprehensive abilities, especially their coordination and social skills. If one wanted to make a living in research, it wasn’t enough to just work in isolation; external communication and learning were also crucial.

”Yes, Director Huang was very enthusiastic and patiently explained it to me. The National Medicine symptom score is based on the *Diagnostic and Efficacy Criteria for Internal Medicine Diseases and Syndromes in National Medicine (Trial Version)*, which is the latest achievement in the domestic field of National Medicine.”

Hearing Wu Ting’s explanation, Huo Yun was very satisfied. Director Huang had high standards; he wouldn’t bother with an ordinary junior doctor. Clearly, Wu Ting had earned his favor, which was why he was willing to teach him everything he knew.

Huo Yun nodded. ”It seems this thesis outline is already very complete. From here, you just need to follow it and implement the plan.”

Just then, Qin Donglai also arrived at the director’s office.

”Director Huo, today’s grand rounds are about to start. We should probably head over.”

Qin Donglai was holding some medical records. He had done his homework on the high-priority patients and would always report to Director Huo beforehand to improve the efficiency of the upcoming grand rounds.

After handing the files to Huo Yun, Qin Donglai glanced at the thesis outline in the director’s hands.

”Judging by Director Huo’s expression, Wu Ting’s outline must have turned out well.”

Huo Yun put down the outline and looked at Qin Donglai with a rather serious expression.

”It’s not just ’turned out well.’ It’s exceptionally well-done.”

”Donglai, look at you. You’ve been in my department for so many years. Why can’t you learn from Wu Ting? Can’t you show some ambition and produce an outline of this quality for me? With your experience and skill, if you had a few papers to pave the way, you would have been promoted to associate director long ago.”

Everyone present was an insider, so Huo Yun didn’t hold back. He had a love-hate relationship with Qin Donglai.

Qin Donglai gave an awkward, sheepish laugh.

”Director, you know how I am. With so many surgeries lined up, where would I find the energy to write a paper? Besides, I really can’t find a suitable angle. I’ll just wait until I’ve gathered more material and let some ideas brew.”

Huo Yun looked at Qin Donglai and sighed. ”You, you!”

”Alright, get ready. Let’s go to the rounds.”

Qin Donglai handed the thesis outline back to Wu Ting. In a rare move, the director had given it his full approval without a single change!

”Wu Ting, wait here for a moment. We’ll go to the wards together.”

Huo Yun intentionally kept Wu Ting by his side. He had seen Wu Ting’s performance over the past few days. Today, he was going to build up Wu Ting’s prestige and send a message to the department—a message about his, Huo Yun’s, attitude toward Wu Ting!

Seeing Huo Yun give the order, Qin Donglai understood immediately and gave Wu Ting an encouraging smile.

Huo Yun’s grand rounds had always been a nightmare and an ordeal for all the junior doctors.

Before Huo Yun arrived, all the doctors had already lined up according to seniority.

Luo Ming, Cheng Feng, and the other residents in their cohort all waited with trepidation.

A moment later, they saw Huo Yun striding over, flanked by Qin Donglai and Wu Ting on his left and right.

Seeing Wu Ting following so closely behind Huo Yun, with the director even offering him guidance from time to time, all the doctors were rather surprised.

’What’s going on? Why is Director Huo keeping Wu Ting by his side, and so closely?’

Many of the doctors were utterly bewildered.

A sour feeling welled up in Cheng Feng as he watched. These past few days, he had clearly felt his mentor’s distance. Even he had never received this kind of favor from him.

Huo Yun handed the files in his hand to Wu Ting, then, as was customary, began his inquiries starting with Bed 01.

The physician in charge immediately stepped forward to report.

Only then did everyone pull their attention away from Wu Ting and nervously focus on the rounds.

Before long, Huo Yun came to a patient under Wu Ting’s care.

It was Ma Weiguo, who had previously undergone a secondary flexor tendon rupture repair surgery performed by Wu Ting.

”Ma Weiguo, how is your rehabilitation training going?”

Huo Yun asked in detail.

”What’s your degree of active flexion and extension in your wrist and fingers...”

”How are the isolated flexor digitorum superficialis tendon gliding exercises...”

”How are the isolated flexor digitorum profundus tendon gliding exercises...”

”Here, make a hook fist... now shape your hand like a duck’s beak... squeeze the sponge ball... spread your fingers against the rubber band...”

Huo Yun meticulously put Ma Weiguo through a comprehensive series of tests. As they went through the full routine, his expression grew more and more astonished.

Beside him, Qin Donglai and the other senior attending physicians, and even the associate chief physicians, were just as pleasantly surprised.

The junior doctors, who didn’t understand the significance, were confused and looked to their supervising doctors.

”You might not understand the meaning of these tests. They show that Ma Weiguo’s surgery was extremely successful, and his prognosis is even better than expected. This means the surgeon’s debridement and suturing were perfect, executed to a very high degree. The patient’s hand function has recovered beyond all expectations.”

Hearing the senior physician’s explanation, everyone finally understood.

Huo Yun also turned to Wu Ting. ”Wu Ting, you performed this surgery exceptionally well. Good job!”

Hearing Director Huo’s praise, the other doctors looked at Wu Ting with envy. To be singled out for praise by the director during grand rounds was the highest honor, especially during this critical period of competition for hospital residency positions.

Even the doctors who were previously insensitive to the department’s political currents could now sense something: Director Huo intended to cultivate Wu Ting!

After checking on Ma Weiguo, Director Huo moved on to the next patient, Old Luo.

This was another case where Wu Ting had participated in the critical life-saving steps of the surgery.

Huo Yun began his questions.

This patient was under Luo Ming’s primary care, with Wu Ting also involved. Luo Ming reported in detail:

”The patient’s X-ray shows most of the pulmonary shadow has been absorbed. There have been no adverse reactions—no vomiting, rashes, or diarrhea...”

”The patient has not developed sputum, coughing, or high fever, nor any chest pain, shortness of breath, or palpitations. There have been basically no postoperative infections. It’s clear that Dr. Wu’s integrated National and modern medicine therapy is having a remarkable effect!”

After listening, Huo Yun nodded repeatedly, looked at Wu Ting again, and offered another round of praise:

”Wu Ting, it seems your concept for an integrated National and modern medicine therapy is off to a great start. Now that the thesis outline is finalized, keep up the good work.”

Hearing the director’s words, everyone present—except for Qin Donglai and Luo Ming, who had some inkling—was incredulous as they tried to grasp the profound meaning of his statement.

’Wu Ting has actually pioneered a Surgical Technique, and he has Director Huo’s support and a complete thesis outline!’

’What’s gotten into Wu Ting lately? He’s quietly accomplished what takes other junior doctors years to do!’

The most surprised of all was Cheng Feng. Just yesterday, when Director Huo had given him back the research project *The Effect of 15°C Antiseptic Solution on Pain Reduction During Debridement of Superficial Second-Degree Burn Wounds*, he had thought that the director still favored him after all.

He never expected that Wu Ting had already found a better direction.

Cheng Feng felt an inexplicable sense of grievance, mixed with a touch of jealousy.

The other residents in the Emergency Surgery team had originally seen Cheng Feng as the one to strive towards. Suddenly, they realized a dark horse had emerged today!

Wu Ting, during today’s director’s grand rounds, had burst onto the scene!

Watching everyone’s eyes on Wu Ting, the shrewd and calculating Huo Yun silently took credit for his masterful arrangement.
