Return of the Antagonistic Lady Boss

Chapter 425: Chapter 399: So Dumb I Could Cry (Bonus Update for 200+ Monthly Votes)

Dong Yi and Qian are quite similar; both have gentle voices that usually don’t get too loud. To hear her raise her voice to such a volume, she must be truly upset.

”Yu Mingyi! You’re the one who needs to see a doctor! Is there something wrong with your brain?!”

Mrs. Yu was momentarily stunned and then looked at Qian, raising her eyebrows.

Meaning, is this what you call a perfect match?

Qian gave an awkward smile and whispered, ”This is actually similar to when Uncle used to write on your lunchbox. Didn’t you yell at him like this back in the day?”

Before Mrs. Yu could respond, a serious explanation came from inside by Mr. Yu.

”There’s nothing wrong with my brain. We get regular check-ups. It’s you who always faints, so you might have a problem. When I said I liked you, you fainted; when I said I didn’t like you, you still fainted. It’s clearly you who has a problem.”

Oh dear... Mrs. Yu rubbed her forehead, exasperated by her silly son.

Such a silly kid, is he destined to be single forever?

”Ah!!!”

A scream of frustration came from inside.

Qian swore that they were earnestly arguing in there. As a family member, she should be a bit anxious or something, but why did she feel like laughing so much?

Hahaha!

Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Mrs. Yu’s mouth twitching too, and Qian felt balanced. Look, even his own mom was laughing at how ridiculous Mr. Yu was. If she chuckled, it wasn’t a big deal, pfft...

It’s a pity her phone didn’t have a recording function. Otherwise, she could record it for Xiaoqiang to listen to—when he’s tired, it would relieve him, and when he’s in a bad mood, it would cheer him up. It’s true, it’s a miracle Yu Mingyi can find a partner.

”Don’t be scared, Dong Yi. If there’s something wrong, we’ll get it checked together. If you need medication, take it; employees have discounts at the clinic...”

Qian turned around to face the wall, her shoulders shaking uncontrollably. She figured she’d live off this joke for the next six months.

”I don’t have a problem, you have a problem, you definitely have a problem!” This was enough to make Dong Yi incoherent with anger.

”Okay, I’m the one with the problem. But don’t be angry, don’t faint again, put on a coat and let’s go to the hospital...” Yu Mingyi was trying to go along with Dong Yi, but she didn’t seem to appreciate it?

”Yu Mingyi, let me seriously ask you, do you like me or not—Forget it, don’t answer. Let’s stick to your first answer: you like me!”

Dong Yi had an epiphany; if she continued to get angry with him, she might just drive herself to the brink.

She closed her eyes and used the emotional management techniques Qian had taught her to suppress her emotions.

She needed to tackle the problems one by one and stay calm.

Dong Yi’s emotional intelligence wasn’t particularly low, at least much higher than Yu Mingyi’s. She just had very little interaction with people before, which meant she had slightly less experience. But being around Qian so much, she’d picked up some of Qian’s problem-solving techniques. After calming herself, she looked seriously at Mr. Yu and spoke.

”After you finish talking about your situation, I’m going to talk about my feelings. I feel like I’m not good enough for you. You know my family situation: my parents passed away, and our financial situation is poor. I only managed to get through college thanks to scholarships. Your family is in a much better position; maybe your parents wouldn’t agree with us being together.”

I agree!!! Mrs. Yu was silently shouting in her mind outside the room. After hearing her son’s recent display, she genuinely felt this would be a good opportunity to quickly marry him off. Whoever is willing to take him should hurry up. Otherwise, which girl would be willing to be with this kind of man, living together would be infuriating!

Qian squeezed Mrs. Yu’s hand, signaling with her eyes, ”Auntie, you need to stay calm, don’t get so excited. Don’t interfere in their matters!”

Alright, I’ll endure. Mrs. Yu clenched her fists and pressed her ears against the door, blatantly eavesdropping.

Qian thought she might truly be growing fond of this future mother-in-law—a cute little old lady with no airs, a bit of gossiping, very warm-hearted.

”My parents aren’t like that; they wouldn’t care about these things,” said Yu Mingyi, disliking the way she demeaned herself. He thought she was an excellent girl.

Yes, that’s right, Mrs. Yu couldn’t help but nod, and accidentally, the hair accessory on her head brushed against the doorbell on the security door.

Yu Mingyi heard the sound and started walking in that direction. Qian knew that if anyone else got involved at this critical moment, things with Mr. Yu would get tricky. Given his reserved nature, if he got interrupted, there might not be another chance to provoke him to open up, especially since Wang Xiaohong’s mother’s kind of provoking incidents don’t happen often. So what to do?

Yu Mingyi swore he heard something at the door. But when he went over and opened it, there was no one there.

Once Yu Mingyi closed the door, Mrs. Yu took the basket off her head and glared at Qian, who was hiding behind a pile of cabbages.

The only one who would dare put a basket on her future mother-in-law’s head would be Chen Xiaoqian.

Qian blinked and took her hand off Panpan’s mouth. Luckily, she had reacted quickly in that situation.

This was an old-style apartment complex, with two households per floor. The hallway was cluttered with cabbages and other odds and ends. The time it took Mr. Yu to walk over from the inner room was just enough for Qian to place a basket on Mrs. Yu’s head, push her down, and for Qian to swiftly hide with Panpan behind a pile of cabbages. This was when the advantage of being small and slender came into play. If she were any larger, she wouldn’t have been able to hide so well.

Qian gestured at the door, signaling to continue eavesdropping, and Mrs. Yu looked at her, exasperated, then continued to listen with Qian.

The bond between a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law is built on joint gossip and mutual mischief. Qian’s genuine nature unexpectedly won Mrs. Yu’s greater affection. This way of gaining favor was truly fresh and unconventional.

Due to this little interlude, Dong Yi and Mr. Yu fell back into silence. Courage isn’t something everyone has, nor can it be summoned at any moment. Dong Yi had originally intended to speak her mind in one go, but after such a distraction, looking at his handsome face, she didn’t know how to begin.

Yu Mingyi broke the silence after a moment.

”In any case, I believe you’re a girl who deserves to be treated better. You shouldn’t waste too much time on a man who’s bringing up a child. The reason I’m telling you this is so that you don’t dwell on what happened today. I’ll handle those people.”

Could it be that the hard-won step forward was all for nothing? Is everything going back to square one?

Mrs. Yu outside was very anxious. Silly son, now’s the time to show some courage! Be brave!

Qian closed her eyes—that’s why she didn’t want to meddle in Mr. Yu and Dong Yi’s affairs. The paper-thin barrier is easy to pierce, but once pierced, what lies beyond isn’t something a psychologist could explain. It comes down to the individual.
