Return of the Antagonistic Lady Boss

Chapter 313: Chapter 291: Silly

”You silly girl, I don’t know whether to call you smart or foolish. Forget it, since things are like this, just get engaged. But remember, if he ever dares to bully you or looks down on you for sleeping with him before marriage, just come back home. Mom will take care of you, no need to put up with him!”

”But didn’t you always disagree with getting engaged so early?”

”And you dare to mention it! Silly girl! If it weren’t for your carelessness, why would I... Forget it. Anyway, he doesn’t even mind that you can’t cook, so he probably won’t be mean to you. I’ll see his mother tomorrow. If she’s a difficult old lady, I won’t agree easily...”

Qian watched her mother nag and thought to herself, with your IQ, trying to battle with Mrs. Yu is just asking for trouble.

Luckily, Yu Minglang’s mother was a very kind old lady. Her support for Yu Minglang and Qian’s marriage made Qian feel both touched and puzzled.

Considering that women from that era aren’t usually this open-minded, and most mothers in the world would stand by their children unconditionally, just like her own mother, Mrs. Jia Xiufang.

Always criticizing her on the surface, but in her heart, all she wanted was to ensure her daughter was not bullied.

And the fact that Yu Minglang’s mother even hit Yu Minglang took Qian by surprise. Actually, if Mrs. Yu had concerns and thought she was an immodest girl, Qian could understand. After all, how many old ladies of that era were truly open-minded?

It seems she got lucky after all.

Qian later found out she was indeed lucky, encountering a good family, and later events confirmed this.

”You’re the type who could burn down the kitchen just cooking, but Yu Minglang still doesn’t mind. Just marry him already. If you do get engaged, don’t act cluelessly and let people find faults with you. No way, this holiday, I’ve got to teach you to cook. Let’s see what disaster you’ll make of the kitchen.”

Hearing that she’d have to cook during the holiday, Qian suddenly wanted to escape...

Dinner was settled near Qian’s home, the place she feasted the first time she was reincarnated and where she made Ni Jianren pay heavily.

In just a few months, everything changed. She was getting engaged, and her fiancé was the father of her child from her past life.

Jia Xiufang ordered many dishes, treating Yu Minglang with such enthusiasm, trying to probe—oh no, directly interrogate him.

Questions like future plans, how many years until a promotion, when to visit his house, how the renovation would be, when to marry, how many children, and if he favored boys over girls...

Qian tried several times to stop her menopausal mother’s unstoppable torrent of questions, but Jia Xiufang ignored Qian and asked on.

It’s engagement time, so there’s no holding back like before.

Yu Minglang responded like the perfect son-in-law, answering everything Jia Xiufang asked flawlessly, leaving her no grounds for criticism and quite satisfied.

Chen Zilong kept his head down, uninterested in the gossip his mother was asking, and idly turned on the TV in the private room.

The news was on, and just when Chen Zilong was about to change the channel, he put down the remote and casually mentioned.

”Human trafficking bust, four abducted individuals rescued, including two girls from our Q City!”

Both Qian and Yu Minglang looked up, watching the news about the breaking of a major cross-province human trafficking case.

It said that three traffickers were caught on the spot, and the remaining accomplices were all apprehended by the morning. Normally, this news should be delayed.

But because the recent trafficking had caused widespread panic, to calm the public, they broadcasted it as soon as the arrests were made.

Qian looked up, seeing the pixellated suspects being taken into cars on screen. Though their faces were unclear, their body outlines were recognizable as those villains.

She glanced at Yu Minglang, who gave her a reassuring look, and Qian continued eating in peace.

”These scoundrels deserve the death penalty when caught. It’s outrageous, kids being taken away is too tragic, oh, and two girls from our city...”

Jia Xiufang stopped interrogating her son-in-law and muttered to herself while watching the screen.

”Wasn’t there supposed to be five rescued, including another girl from Q City? How come it’s only four?” Qian asked Yu Minglang.

She was from Q City, but Xiaoyu was from another city. Altogether, five girls were rescued. Two were abducted earlier, while Qian and three others were kidnapped recently.

”Two were taken earlier, one of whom has already had a child. Apparently... she doesn’t want to return home for the sake of her child and has settled in that remote valley.”

Yu Minglang’s words made Qian tighten her lips. This was the most helpless situation, where families that bought brides use children to bind the mothers, exploiting maternal love to perpetuate their lineage.

”The severely injured girl is from Q City and perhaps not too far from your home. Her condition isn’t good, she’s very traumatized.” Yu Minglang didn’t want to see that girl.

Because seeing her would inevitably stir fear in him.

If he had been late, would his Mei have ended up like that, reminding him of his failure to protect her?

”I’ll find a classmate to check on her, see if we can assist her.” Qian felt a slight guilt towards the girl.

That girl was beaten and abused right under her nose. Qian protected Shi Yu but couldn’t further shield another girl.

For one, she wasn’t familiar, unsure of the girl’s acting skills and lacked the tacit understanding she and Shi Yu had as dormmates and friends, which made communication easier. Besides, the girl didn’t get a chance to interact with Qian and Shi Yu after boarding the vehicle, and if Qian spoke to her, it would raise suspicion.

In that situation, she could only protect herself and Shi Yu.

Now that the girl was rescued, Qian wanted to see if she could use her professional skills to help her through the psychological barriers.

”Don’t go visit her. If you’re worried, I’ll pay for her to see another psychologist. You shouldn’t go.”

”Yes, I know, it’s not suitable for me to go, I’ll find someone else.”

Qian understood, the reason she mentioned finding a classmate instead of personally going was to avoid reminding that girl of the bad memories. Also, entering together while she was fine and the girl was deeply traumatized could easily lead to psychological imbalance.

Jia Xiufang didn’t notice the strange conversation between her daughter and Yu Minglang, she was still watching the news.

Muttering angrily as she watched.

”These people are terrible, it’s not easy to raise a daughter, and they just get taken away to those remote valleys, don’t the parents worry? Nowadays, girls’ defenses are too weak; how do they get abducted?”

Yu Minglang immediately nodded in agreement and sneaked a glance at the guilty-looking Qian, ”Right? Some silly girls even dare to take black cabs at night; they get sold off just like that.”
