Return of the Antagonistic Lady Boss

Chapter 305: Chapter 283: Stirring Up Trouble

Mrs. Yu finished the call and turned around to find that Yu Minglang had disappeared without her noticing.

”That brat, wait till I get my hands on him!”

The phone rang again, and Mrs. Yu picked it up.

”Oh, sister-in-law, yes, my youngest is in the hospital. Girlfriend?”

Mrs. Yu was taken aback; the caller was the sister-in-law from Mr. Yu’s aunt’s side, someone they rarely interacted with. Mr. Yu was quite straightforward and tended to avoid those he didn’t find agreeable.

These distant relatives had approached Mr. Yu for favors before, but were all refused.

Mr. Yu wasn’t one for tact, he was stern and principled. Anyone who dared bring gifts to him, regardless of how close a relative they were, would be kicked out. Where others might see an easy chance to solve a problem with connections, he staunchly refused to get involved, so the Yu Family’s reputation among relatives wasn’t very good.

These people claimed Mr. Yu had forgotten his roots after gaining success and said whatever they pleased. Mr. Yu didn’t care, and his sons followed suit, acting the same way. These relatives seemed respectful on the surface but spoke cynically behind their backs. Knowing flattery wouldn’t work on the hard-headed Yu Family members, they didn’t bother to maintain contact.

With such limited interaction, why were they suddenly asking about Qian?

”I heard your son’s girlfriend was abducted by criminals, but brought back, right? Ah, what a shame. Is she alright? After staying in such a place for so long, the poor girl must be really pitiful...”

Mrs. Yu was puzzled; how did she know about this?

”Sister-in-law, who did you hear from about my future daughter-in-law being abducted?” Mrs. Yu wasn’t someone with deep schemes, but she knew what could be said and what couldn’t.

In moments like this, she wouldn’t easily admit it. Though the family knew Qian hadn’t been harmed and caused chaos there, outsiders wouldn’t see it the same way.

To protect Qian, Mrs. Yu firmly denied it, especially to relatives who would talk about nothing even if something happened.

”Today I called Aunt; she said your youngest recently cracked a big human trafficking case, rescuing your future daughter-in-law...”

”Such confidential matters, how could Aunt possibly know? Even I don’t know; don’t spread false information.”

Mrs. Yu held back her anger, trying to brush it off, but the caller was persistent.

Speaking in a sympathetic tone.

”Ah Jiao, we know you’re strong, but you need to let this go. Although the poor girl being in that place is regrettable, our Yu Family has its reputation. Giving some money would be enough; we can’t afford the disgrace.”

”Enough!” Mrs. Yu was fuming.

”My daughter-in-law is a good girl, we’ve decided to propose to her family; if you use that tone to defame my daughter-in-law, beware, I’ll tell my Yu!”

”Alright, Ah Jiao, if you’re upset, I won’t say more. But as relatives, holding things back isn’t comfortable. Considering your husband’s prestigious status, your son could find any kind of wife, don’t find a second-hand one—”

”Who are you calling second-hand?” Mrs. Yu, usually so composed, was infuriated.

She hung up immediately, still fuming after the call ended.

Utterly enraged.

Only a few knew about Qian’s abduction—aside from the rescuers, just a few family members knew. The family was tight-lipped and wouldn’t leak it.

Who could have spread this?

She wanted to call Yu Minglang back, but his phone had no signal.

Currently, Yu Minglang was huddled in Hai Zhao’s office in Hai Zhao’s mall, a coffee table full of snacks and a little alcohol.

Yu Minglang rarely drank, given his special profession, but now, while recovering from his injuries, aside from emergencies like rescuing Mei, he wouldn’t have any tasks for now.

Relaxing a bit, he could have a little drink.

”...So it’s like this, I just don’t get why she won’t agree to the engagement,” Yu Minglang said, drinking sullenly.

”It’s really strange, you say she likes you, you like her too, both sides have met each other’s parents and it seemed good. She shouldn’t be refusing.”

Yu Minglang boasted a bit to Hai Zhao, claiming Mei was utterly fond and obsessed with him, and that his liking for Mei was obvious to any observant friend.

So, Hai Zhao found it odd—this isn’t even marriage, how could an engagement be so complicated?

”Could it be she doesn’t like my home’s décor?” Yu Minglang wondered.

Women’s minds, like winding roads, and his Mei, were like multiple mountain roads combined; nobody understood that mind.

”Did she say anything?”

”She said my sofa was hard, I intended to replace it later but never had the time.”

”...I don’t think it’s that.” Refusing an engagement over a sofa seemed unlikely behavior for Qian.

He’d met the girl twice and sensed she was very different—profoundly mysterious, clearly competent. Such a girl wouldn’t reject Yu Minglang over a sofa.

”Then it’s because I hit her.”

”You hit a woman?!” Hai Zhao’s fox-like eyes widened.

He believed others might hit women but Yu Minglang doing it was unheard of; he’d known Yu Minglang long enough to know he disliked women but would never stoop to violence. Especially since Chen Xiaoqian was his cherished treasure, he’d be careful with her, never hitting her.

”I just... I just tapped her butt a few times, not even hard...” Yu Minglang couldn’t understand his impulse to do that.

It led to Mei’s anger surfacing even during her period, evidently furious, refusing the engagement afterward.

”Right after tapping her, you proposed? You should’ve waited, women have moods, coax them a little, buy flowers, give gifts, wait for the anger to dissipate, then plan a grand proposal. She won’t stay angry. Tapping the butt isn’t like hitting elsewhere; it’s not considered hitting a woman.”

As someone with numerous past relationships, Hai Zhao sincerely advised Yu Minglang.

Seeing Yu Minglang’s hazy look, he clarified further.

”Did you propose sincerely? Did you buy at least 99 roses? Better if it’s 999, with a ring in the middle. If she doesn’t agree, kneel down and refuse to get up. I haven’t tried this but estimate it has a 90% success rate with mutual affection.”

Yu Minglang frowned, ”It sounds ridiculous.”

He’d be fine treating Qian well, but forms like that weren’t his style.

In his previous life, his proposal was also from Hai Zhao’s advice, this time, years ahead.

”Then think of something new; anyway, how did you propose to her?”

”I just told her I’d visit her with my mom, then she hung up—hey, why are you spraying me? It’s on my injured arm!”
