The Hero Given to the Demon Queen

Dawn was still far off.

In the lightless cellar Archangel Amara opened her eyes.

Stone ceiling. Damp air. The iron collar around her neck. She tried to move and failed. One arm was free; everything else refused her. The stumps on her back where wings had once been burned with every breath.

She squeezed her eyes shut.

“A dream. It’s only a dream.”

She opened them again. Nothing had changed. Tears spilled at once. She reached for the light that had always answered her.

Empty.

Memories crashed in: the square, the brand, the hero’s father burning, the ash, the grey-haired thing, the slow tearing of her wings, the lullaby, and the moment her own Goddess had pulled the last fragment of power out of her chest and left her to fall.

“I… I can’t have been taken,” she sobbed. “My Goddess… she wouldn’t… she wouldn’t sell me… she can’t…”

Her stomach cramped with hunger. Her mouth was dust-dry. In the dark she heard the soft scrape of claws. Something warm and wet moved against her lower legs. She looked down.

Rats.

A knot of them was already feeding on her calves and feet, chewing with busy, wet sounds. Half of one foot was simply gone.

Amara’s mind snapped.

She screamed and thrashed with her free arm, trying to kick them away. The rats scattered in a panic of squeaks. Her screams tore up the short stairway and into the house above.

—

Alvia jerked awake.

The sound from below was raw and continuous. She was halfway out of bed when a hand closed around her wrist.

Elara’s eyes were open in the dark.

“Where are you going?”

“The cellar—she’s awake—”

“Leave her.”

Alvia stared. “We are not like them. Let’s end it. Kill her and be done.”

Elara sat up slowly. Her voice was quiet and cold.

“Less than a day ago she was going to burn you alive on a stake. Are you an idiot for pitying that? Listen carefully. Do you know why good people lose? Because when they have power they refuse to punish the ones who deserve it. And afterward? The moment those same people get power again, they destroy you and everyone you love whether you spared them or not. That thing burned my father alive while he begged her to stop. And right now you’re feeling sorry for her.”

She stood and reached for the dried clothes.

“Sit down. The clothes are dry. You’re half-naked. Get dressed. I’m getting dressed too. Then I’m going down. I’ll cut out her tongue and come back.”

Alvia’s face went white. “You’re going to cut out her tongue?”

Elara did not answer. She dressed quickly and walked to the cellar door without looking back.

Alvia pulled on yesterday’s clothes with shaking hands and sank into the armchair, staring at the closed door.

—

Elara descended with a single floating crystal. Soft light filled the cellar.

Amara hung from the neck chain, free arm braced against the wall, legs a chewed and bloody ruin. When she saw Elara her ruined face twisted with pure hate.

“You. When I get free I will punish you in ways you can’t imagine. I won’t kill you. You’ll beg me to kill you. Do you understand, you little—”

Elara’s gaze had dropped to the Archangel’s legs. The rats had been thorough. Large sections of muscle and skin were missing. Bone showed in places.

Something complicated moved across her face.

“I’m… truly sorry.”

Amara blinked, thrown. “What? Then unlock me. That’s an order, you whore—”

“Not for that,” Elara said quietly. “I honestly didn’t expect the rats.”

Amara looked down at herself. The damage was so complete it took a second for her mind to accept it. Then the screaming started again—high, continuous, animal.

“No—no—no—they’re eating me—they’re eating me—”

The sound slid under Elara’s skin like a key. One eye flickered pure gold. Grey dust sifted from the ends of her hair and reformed an instant later. The presence inside her rose.

Amara saw the change and her voice cracked into terror.

“You—it’s you again—what are you?!”

The voice that answered was layered.

“This place reeks. It’s completely ruined my mood.”

Amara sobbed. “My wings—give them back—please—”

“Ah. Yes. Sorry. I left them behind. I was thinking of sewing the white feathers into a dress for myself, but I never got around to it. What a shame. Still, these things happen. No need to be so upset.”

“You’re mocking me!” Amara screamed. “Unlock me—please—I’m sorry—I swear on my Goddess I’ll never come near any of you again—just heal me and let me go—”

For a moment the gold in Elara’s eye dimmed. Pity tried to surface. The Goddess of Ashes felt it and immediately flooded Elara’s mind with perfect memories: the square, the brand, her father’s voice breaking as he burned, the crowd chanting, the way Amara had smiled.

The pity died.

The Goddess looked at the ruined legs with mild distaste.

“Already halfway gone. Messy. Let’s tidy it up.”

She closed her free hand. The remaining flesh and bone of both lower legs blackened, crumbled, and fell away in chunks of charred meat and ash. Amara’s scream hit a pitch that scraped the inside of the skull. She thrashed until her free wrist bled.

“Kill me—just kill me—”

The Goddess tilted her head, almost disappointed.

“Why do you want to die so badly? I just saved you from infection. You should be thanking me. Even your own Goddess never did this much for you.”

Amara’s mind finally snapped. She convulsed, foam at the corners of her mouth, one arm yanking uselessly at the chain. The Goddess watched for a few seconds, then sighed.

“Ah. Trying to leave the game early. That’s cheating.”

She raised one hand. Ash-fire, precise and cruel, sank into the open wounds—not to destroy, but to rebuild. New bone, muscle, and skin began to grow back at a speed that should have been impossible. The regeneration was pure agony. Amara screamed until her voice broke, body arching against the chain as every nerve lit up at once. When it was over she had legs again—whole, unmarked, and trembling so violently she could not stand.

She stared at them, then at the Goddess, tears streaming.

“Thank you—thank you—thank you—thank you—”

The Goddess waved a hand. The iron collar and chain simply opened. Amara collapsed to the stone floor, wingless, naked under the torn remnants of her once-radiant armor, curling in on herself.

“Your clothes stink,” the Goddess said mildly. “Take them off.”

Amara stripped with shaking hands and wrapped her arms around her own body, pure white skin marked only by the fresh red lines where the collar had sat.

The Goddess regarded her for a long moment.

“It’s been a long time since I saw a fallen angel. You’re very beautiful. But you did terrible things, didn’t you?”

Amara could only sob. “I’m sorry—I’m sorry—”

“Turn around.”

Amara turned. A whip of condensed ash formed in the Goddess’s hand. The first lash split the silence. Amara’s fists clenched against the wall. The Goddess spoke almost gently between strokes.

“This is so you can forgive yourself. Don’t misunderstand.”

“No—no, my lady—I understand—”

The whipping continued in steady, measured rhythm. Ten minutes. When it ended Amara’s back was a map of raised red welts. She remained on her knees, forehead against the stone, shaking.

The gold in Elara’s eye slowly faded. The ash-whip crumbled. Elara stood blinking, memory returning in fragments. She looked down at the naked, marked, wingless Archangel who still had not moved from the submissive posture.

“…Sit properly.”

Amara scrambled to obey, kneeling with her back straight, eyes down. “Yes, my lady. Yes.”

Elara found a length of plain leather among the old stores, fashioned a simple collar, and fastened it around Amara’s throat. She clipped a short lead to it.

“Come.”

Amara crawled up the stairs after her like a broken dog, the lead held loosely in Elara’s hand. When they reached the main room Elara secured the lead to a heavy iron ring set into the wall near the hearth. Amara settled onto her knees exactly where the lead allowed, head bowed, silent except for the fine tremor that ran through her entire body.

Alvia stared, face bloodless.

“What did you do?”

Elara’s voice was tired and a little distant.

“I didn’t do anything. She did. I’m sorry.”

“You were down there for minutes. I heard everything.”

“It wasn’t me,” Elara said quietly. “It was the Goddess of Ashes.”

Alvia’s gaze moved over Amara—naked, collared, back striped, eyes empty of everything except fear and obedience. The white elf’s voice shook.

“We should kill her.”

Amara’s head jerked up. Fresh tears spilled.

“No—no—please—my lady, please—”

“Silence.”

Amara’s mouth snapped shut so hard her teeth clicked.

Elara took Alvia’s arm and steered her toward the bedroom, closing the door behind them so the collared Archangel could not hear.

Outside, the first grey light of morning began to touch the charmed windows.

Inside, Amara knelt where she had been left, forehead nearly touching the floor, and did not move.
