The Hero Given to the Demon Queen

Dawn had not fully broken when Lilith left the citadel.

She gave no warning. No sister, no commander, no guard was informed. At the outer gate she paused only long enough to look down at the two armored figures who had dropped to their knees.

“No one follows me. Not one of you. If I sense a single presence at my back, I will consider it treason.”

The guards pressed their foreheads to the stone and did not dare breathe until she was gone.

Then Lilith rose into the cold morning sky, crimson power unfurled around her like living wings, and turned her face toward the north.

—

In the small cabin, the air already smelled of cooking meat.

Elara stood at the stove, sleeves rolled up, carefully turning pieces of Frosthide in the old pan. Color had returned to her face. Her legs still ached, but they held her weight. She moved with quiet concentration, as if the simple act of preparing food was the first normal thing she had done in weeks.

Behind her the narrow bed creaked.

Alvia sat bolt upright, hand already reaching for a spear that was not there. The space beside her was empty. Panic flared—

“Hey. Easy.”

Elara glanced over her shoulder, a small, startled smile on her lips.

Alvia stared. “You’re up.”

“Yes. Calm down.”

“Yesterday you couldn’t even walk. When did you—”

Elara’s cheeks colored. She looked back at the pan. “Thanks to you. Again. Thank you.”

Alvia scratched the back of her neck, suddenly awkward. “I didn’t do anything special. Anyway… what is that amazing smell?”

Elara’s smile widened. “I tried something different with the animal you caught yesterday.”

Alvia swung her legs out of bed and came closer, sniffing. “When I cooked it, it never smelled this good. Are we sure it’s the same animal?”

“It’s the same one. You’re exaggerating.”

“I’m not. This smells better. Do you not have a nose?”

Elara laughed under her breath. “The important thing is the taste. I hope I didn’t ruin it.”

“There’s no way this smell belongs to something ruined.” Alvia said it with absolute certainty.

Elara nodded, still smiling. “All right, enough stalling. We should eat and leave. It’s not safe to stay here any longer. The storm has stopped.”

“You’re right.”

They sat on the edge of the bed with the pan between them and ate with their fingers. Alvia took the first bite, closed her eyes, and made a low sound of pure pleasure.

“Mmm. Yes. I definitely burned it yesterday. This is so much better.”

Elara grinned. “You’re exaggerating again. Yesterday’s was good too.”

“It was burnt.” Alvia opened one eye. “Why didn’t you tell me? We literally ate charcoal.”

“It wasn’t that bad.”

“It was charcoal.” Alvia pointed a piece of meat at her. “From now on, if I ruin something, tell me. But gently. Don’t crush my soul.”

“Deal.”

They finished quickly. Alvia helped Elara into the heaviest furs and cloak they had. Elara protested once, cheeks pink.

“I can dress myself, you know.”

Alvia glanced down at her still-unsteady legs. “You need to be properly covered. The wind up there is merciless.”

“If you put this much on me I won’t be able to walk.”

“You won’t walk.” Alvia’s voice was calm. “I’ve recovered. I’ll fly us out.”

Elara blinked. “I can’t fly.”

“I’ll carry you.”

“That’s—no, that’s too much—”

“‘No’ isn’t an answer. We need to leave this place fast.”

Elara looked away, ears red, words tangling. “I keep… being a burden to you…”

Alvia’s expression softened into something warm and genuine.

“You’re not a burden. Get that out of your head. Because of you I got to eat proper meat today. I kept thinking the animal itself was bitter… turns out the problem was me. I just burned it.”

Elara laughed—quiet, surprised, real.

Alvia stared at her for a second too long. The words slipped out before she could stop them.

“You’re so beautiful when you laugh.”

Silence.

Both of them froze. Color flooded Alvia’s face so fast it looked painful. She spun toward the door, nearly tripping.

“W-we should go. Yeah. Let’s just go.”

Elara, equally red, managed a tiny nod. “Y-yeah. Let’s go.”

Outside, the snow stretched endless and white under a pale sky. Alvia flexed her fingers, feeling the familiar hum of magic return to her veins. She turned to Elara, still awkward.

“So… how do we do this?”

Elara shrugged helplessly. “I don’t know.”

Alvia exhaled, then opened her arms.

“Stand still like a little statue. I’ll pick you up and we’ll get the hell out of here.”

“…Okay.”

Alvia scooped her up in one smooth motion. Elara’s face went scarlet; she immediately turned her head away, staring at anything that was not Alvia’s neck. The white elf adjusted her grip, testing the weight, then grinned with sudden, boyish delight.

“All right. We’re flying. Yuppii—!”

Elara’s startled laugh burst out of her. “Did you seriously just say ‘yuppii’?”

Alvia only laughed harder, kicked off the ground, and the two of them rose into the cold northern sky.

They flew south-east, toward the thinning edge of the true north, aiming for the sparsely inhabited forest border that touched the farthest human lands. Alvia’s power held strong for a long time, but even she had limits after days of exhaustion. When the endless white finally began to show streaks of dark green below, she descended into a sheltered stand of pine and set Elara carefully on her feet.

“Rest,” she said, breathing hard. “Just for a little while.”

—

Far behind them, the north felt Lilith arrive.

She descended first into the outer forests. Every living thing that sensed her presence—Frosthide, lesser predators, even the slow-moving Fleshcraver remnants—turned and fled into the deepest dens they could find. The air itself seemed to recoil.

Lilith did not linger. She rose again, drove deeper, and in the open sky above the white desert she unleashed a vast searching charm. Threads of crimson power spread for leagues, reading every footprint, every broken branch, every lingering trace of body heat and magic.

The charm led her straight to the cabin.

She landed hard enough to crack the frozen ground. Outside lay the discarded remains of a Frosthide—hide scraped, bones picked clean. The chimney still breathed a thin thread of smoke. Lilith pushed the door open.

The single room was warm. The stove still held living embers. The narrow bed was unmade, blankets tangled.

She stepped closer.

On the pillow, caught in the rough fabric, were strands of pale silver-white hair.

And beside them, unmistakable, were several long threads of gold.

Lilith’s mind went blank.

Her throat closed. A fine tremor ran through her fingers. Heat pricked behind her eyes. She sat down on the edge of the bed as if her legs had forgotten how to hold her, staring at those two colors side by side.

No.

No, no, no.

Only hair. Nothing happened. Elara isn’t like that. She isn’t a whore. I’m sure of it. I’m sure—

The denial cracked.

A sound tore out of her—raw, furious, almost grieving. She surged to her feet, seized the entire mattress, and hurled it through the open door with enough force to send it spinning across the snow. The wooden frame splintered. Power exploded outward from her body in a visible crimson wave that rolled across the northern waste like a silent earthquake. Every remaining creature for miles fled in mindless terror.

Lilith stood in the wrecked doorway, chest heaving, eyes burning.

Then she launched herself skyward again, leaving the ruined cabin behind, hunting.

—

High above, hidden behind her carefully woven veil, Archangel Amara watched it all.

Her original plan—simple, clean death by cold—had failed. The hero still lived. The last white elf still lived. And now the Demon Queen herself had entered the board.

Amara’s perfect face tightened with cold resolve.

She would no longer wait.

She would find Elara first, kill her quietly, and present the Goddess with whatever story was required afterward. The mortal whore would not be allowed to reach Lilith again. She would not be allowed to reach the Goddess at all.

Amara folded her wings and began to descend, light carefully banked, presence completely hidden from both the demon below and the divine above.
