The Hero Given to the Demon Queen

Lilith saw the opening and took it.

She dropped from the sky like a crimson spear, fingers already closing around Elara’s arm. For a fraction of a second their eyes met—gold still faintly lingering in Elara’s irises, exhaustion and fury in Lilith’s.

Then seven pillars of white light slammed into the ground around them.

The angels moved as one. Wings of pure radiance spread wide, blades of condensed divinity already formed in their hands. They did not speak. They simply attacked.

Lilith released Elara with a snarl and met the first blade with bare power. The impact cracked the air. She was stronger than any single one of them—stronger than several together—but seven Archangel-class warriors fighting in perfect coordination were not a trivial obstacle. Crimson and white clashed in violent bursts high above the ruined square. Each exchange forced Lilith to give ground, to circle, to kill one only to find two more pressing in.

She would win. That was never in question.

But it would take time.

—

On the ground Elara did not watch the battle.

She crawled through the ash on hands and knees until she found the broken white form of Archangel Amara. The once-radiant body was almost unrecognizable—wingless, blood-soaked, chest rising in the shallowest possible breaths. Still alive. Barely.

A rare healing crystal, cracked but not spent, lay half-buried near Alvia’s stake. Elara seized it, pressed it to the white elf’s sternum, and forced the last of its light into her. Alvia’s wounds closed enough to stop the worst of the bleeding. Her eyes fluttered open, unfocused and full of pain.

“Elara…?”

“Hold on to me,” Elara said. “We’re leaving.”

Alvia’s gaze drifted to the limp Archangel. “What are you doing with that corpse?”

“She’s not a corpse. And we’re taking her.”

“Are you insane? The Goddess herself discarded her. Why would we—”

Elara was already hauling Amara’s body up, draping one arm over her own shoulders. “Because she’s still breathing. And because I’m going to make her regret everything she did to us. Can you fly the three of us?”

Alvia stared at her for a long second, then exhaled through clenched teeth.

“I don’t know. But we’re not discussing it here. Hold on tight.”

She wrapped one arm around Elara and the other around Amara’s waist, kicked off the ground, and the three of them rose into the smoke-filled sky. Behind them Lilith’s furious roar shook the air as the remaining angels forced her attention back to the fight.

—

Thirty minutes later the last angel fell in two pieces.

Lilith hung in the air, chest heaving, crimson energy still crackling around her fists. She turned in a full circle. No golden hair. No white-elf wings. No trail.

They were gone.

For a moment pure, murderous instinct told her to hunt anyway. Then the memory of the swirling ash, the golden eyes, and the thing that had worn Elara’s face rose behind her thoughts. Understanding that phenomenon now mattered more than the chase.

With a final, venomous glance at the empty sky, Lilith turned south and flew hard toward her citadel.

—

High above the forests, Alvia’s flight had settled into a strained but steady rhythm. Elara clung to her side; Amara’s unconscious body hung limply between them.

“Where are we even going?” Elara asked after a long silence.

“I don’t know!” Alvia snapped, voice frayed. “Wherever we go the Goddess will be looking, the Demon Queen will be looking, and whatever is inside you is still a mystery. Pick a direction.”

Elara was quiet for a moment.

“I only remember the Archangel killing my father and calling me a heretic. Everything after that is… broken.”

Alvia twisted her head to stare at her. “You really don’t remember? Any of it?”

“No.”

Alvia’s jaw worked. “Then why are we dragging this bitch with us? The Goddess threw her away. Let’s just drop her.”

“Because she’s still breathing,” Elara said flatly. “And because I’m going to take my revenge properly. Not with a clean death.”

Alvia looked like she wanted to argue further, then simply shook her head.

“Fine. But we need somewhere safe first.”

“Dark-elf territory,” Elara said. “Lilith won’t expect us to go there. I know a place.”

Alvia’s wings stuttered. “Absolutely not—”

“I understand how you feel about them. But if Lilith catches us, what she will do to you will be worse than anything the dark elves ever did. Trust me long enough to reach the house. After that I’ll explain everything I can.”

A long, reluctant silence.

“…All right.”

—

They flew low and careful, avoiding settlements, until Elara guided them into a stretch of dense, ancient forest that looked completely ordinary from above. She pointed to a cluster of trees that seemed no different from the rest.

“There. Land.”

Alvia descended, skeptical. “I see nothing but trees.”

“That’s the point.” Elara slid to the ground, still supporting Amara’s weight. “First, this.” She pulled a length of old rope from a pouch, fashioned a rough collar, and secured it around the Archangel’s neck. “Now you can drag her. Follow me. The canopy is too thick for anyone to see from the sky, and the house itself is under an ancient concealment charm. You won’t notice it until you’re almost on top of it.”

They pushed through undergrowth for several minutes. Then the air shimmered, and a sturdy two-story house of dark wood and stone simply… existed. It should have been impossible to miss, yet a moment earlier it had not been there.

Alvia’s mouth opened. “What is this place?”

“We built it years ago,” Elara said quietly. “During the war. When we needed a place the enemy maps couldn’t find. The charm still holds.”

She pushed the door open.

Inside was larger than the exterior suggested. A main room with a wide stone fireplace already laid with dry wood. A long wooden table. A kitchen of iron pots, hanging herbs, and a hand pump that still worked. One proper bedroom with a large bed. A smaller side room. And, at the back, a low door leading down into a cool, dark storage cellar.

They descended the short wooden stairs. The cellar was small, dry, and smelled of earth and old root vegetables. Elara chained Amara’s neck to a heavy iron ring set into the stone wall, leaving one arm free. She set a clay jug of cloudy water and two raw potatoes within reach.

Alvia watched, troubled. “If she wakes up she’ll be in the dark with rats. She’ll die of thirst or starve.”

“That’s why the water and potatoes are there,” Elara answered. “I left one hand free. She won’t be comfortable. She’s not supposed to be.”

They climbed back up. Elara moved through the kitchen with the automatic efficiency of someone who had done this before—finding an old tin of coffee beans, grinding them by hand, setting a pot to heat. She glanced at Alvia.

“Water magic. Please.”

Alvia obeyed without comment. Soon the rich, bitter scent of coffee filled the quiet house. They sat at the wooden table, two mismatched cups between them. Both women looked destroyed: hair matted, clothes torn, eyes ringed with exhaustion. Alvia’s remaining wounds still wept slowly. Elara’s hands trembled around her cup.

For a while neither spoke.

Then Elara set the cup down carefully. Tears she had been holding back finally spilled over. She wiped at them with the back of one dirty hand, failed, and let them fall.

“All right,” she said, voice rough. “Tell me. What happened out there?”

Alvia looked at her for a long moment, eyes shining with their own unshed tears and something like lingering fear.

“You… changed,” she began quietly. “After your father. Your hair turned grey. Your eyes went from blue to gold. You started laughing like someone else was using your mouth. Ash fell everywhere. Things made of ash appeared and circled us, chanting in a language I didn’t know. You… played with a wounded man. Took his legs and arms while laughing like it was the funniest thing you’d ever seen. When he died you got upset that he stopped reacting. Then you went after the Archangel. You took her wings—one by one—like you were collecting something pretty. She couldn’t stop you. And then you started singing. Or whispering. Something that sounded like a lullaby, but it made her scream and bleed from the eyes. The ash got thicker every time she suffered…”

Alvia’s voice faltered. She stared down at her own hands.

“I thought I’d lost you,” she whispered. “I thought whatever that was had eaten you completely.”

Outside, the forest remained silent and still, the ancient charm holding.

Inside, the fire crackled.

And in the dark cellar below, the broken Archangel drew another shallow, ragged breath.
