The Hero Given to the Demon Queen

Lilith remained in her study long after the guard had left.

The report of the Archangel’s departure should have brought relief. Instead it left a residual unease she could not name. The hero still hoped. The humans still gathered at the slightest rumor. And somewhere in the eastern skies, ash had fallen from clouds that should not have existed.

She was still turning these thoughts over when a sudden, sharp disturbance cut across her senses—like a blade dragged along the edge of the seals she had placed on the hero’s power.

Lilith stood at once.

—

In Elara’s chamber the air was already thick with tension.

Nyx had sealed the door the moment they entered. The borrowed silk gown lay in a heap on the floor. Elara stood in only her underthings, arms crossed tightly over her chest, blue eyes hard.

“Get out of my room. I am going to sleep.”

Nyx’s smile was thin and ugly.

“Your arrogance has grown too large. When you first arrived you cried like a child. Have you already forgotten that your whore of a mother sold you to us? No one will interrupt us today. You are going to clean me. I was dirtied because of you. Everything is your fault. You will give me what I want.”

Elara’s voice stayed level. “If you do not leave, I will scream loud enough to bring the entire wing.”

“No one will hear.” Nyx tapped the door. “The seal I placed blocks sound.”

Elara’s expression shifted. “When you say you were dirtied… what do you mean?”

Nyx’s red eyes burned. “Because of you. Because of you I was raped. She forced me like an animal. It happened because of you. If I take the clean one first—if I take you before my sister does—then I will be clean again. You will be mine.”

Elara stared. “You were raped… and you still try to do the same to me? Think about what your sister will do if I tell her.”

Nyx threw her head back and laughed, high and cracked.

“I no longer care.”

She lunged.

Elara fought—shoving, twisting, shouting “Let go—let go—let go!”—but Nyx was past reason. A burst of raw power slammed Elara’s head against the bedpost. The world tilted. Her limbs grew heavy and slow. She remained conscious, but everything moved through water.

Nyx stripped her with frantic hands.

“Don’t be afraid, hero. You will love it. I will show you paradise.”

Elara’s vision swam. She could not understand how the evening had collapsed into this. Nyx finished undressing herself, laughing softly under her breath.

“Finally… finally…”

Elara’s resistance made the process longer. At last her body went slack—not fully unconscious, but too stunned to fight. Nyx did not touch her at once. She knelt between the hero’s spread knees and stared at the pale, marked body while her own hand moved between her thighs, fingers working in rough, urgent strokes. Her eyes kept flicking toward the sealed door.

“You will belong to me completely,” she whispered.

Elara tried to push herself up. Nyx pinned her wrists with one hand and continued.

“Resisting is useless. You are so beautiful. Just let me look. Don’t fight, darling.”

Tears slipped from the corners of Elara’s eyes even as her face stayed set in stubborn lines. The words came out broken and weak.

“Don’t look… don’t… leave… why don’t you understand…”

Nyx ignored her.

“You show my sister your entire body without shame, yet with me you pretend to be modest. I am going to lick you clean. I will clean myself with you. Stop resisting.”

She leaned down. Her fingers brushed the soft folds between Elara’s legs.

The moment skin met skin, something inside the hero woke.

It was not light. It was not holy. It was cold and vast and hungry. Elara’s hand shot upward with strength that did not belong to her bruised, half-conscious body. Fingers closed around Nyx’s throat like iron. The younger sister’s eyes flew wide in pure shock. She clawed at the wrist, kicked, tried to speak—but the grip only tightened. Dark power poured through Elara’s arm in a silent flood, older than the seals, older than the Queen’s magic.

Lilith felt it like a scream across her senses.

She crossed the royal wing at a near run. The personal seals on Elara’s door yielded to her will. She shoved the door open.

The scene that met her was frozen in a single, terrible instant: Elara naked and dazed on the bed, one hand still outstretched, Nyx already gone—fled in the seconds before the Queen arrived. The air itself tasted of cold ash and something far older.

“What happened here?” Lilith’s voice was sharp with rare urgency. “Why are you naked? What was that power? Answer me!”

Elara’s eyes rolled back. She collapsed.

Nyx appeared in the doorway moments later, breathing hard, hair disordered, the picture of frantic concern.

“Sister—Sister! A female demon appeared and tried to force herself on the hero. I chased her but she escaped!”

Lilith’s eyes turned pure, luminous red. Power rolled off her in visible waves.

“Did she touch what is mine? Did she take anything that belongs to me?”

Nyx flinched. “No, Sister. I saved her. Your heart can be at ease.”

Lilith’s voice dropped into something lethal.

“Increase the guards. Double the patrols. Find that whore. I will have her skin stripped and burned while she still breathes.” She turned on Nyx with sudden fury. “Get out. Do not look. Leave this room. Now.”

Nyx fled, trembling.

Lilith crossed to the bed in two strides. She pulled a heavy blanket over Elara’s bare body, then carefully examined the swelling at the back of the girl’s head. The wound was real. The power she had felt was real. Everything else remained a question she could not yet answer.

—

Outside, the sky tore open.

Thunder cracked so loudly the citadel stones trembled. Rain fell in solid sheets, turning streets into rivers within minutes. Lilith moved to the tall window of Elara’s chamber and stared upward, crimson hair dark with the reflected storm.

“What are you planning, you wretched bitch of a Goddess?” she murmured. “I already defeated you. If you have courage, come face me yourself. Stop these petty games.”

In the human territories the same rain fell like a biblical flood. Then, as suddenly as it had begun, the clouds parted. Sunlight broke through.

The people poured into the streets weeping with joy.

“Thanks be to the Goddess!”

“Thanks to the Archangel!”

“They have come to save us!”

But the sun that shone upon them was not gold.

It was grey.

The exact colour of cold ash.

The same grey sun rose over demon lands, over dark-elf forests, over white-elf spires. Every race under the sky looked up and saw it. Rain continued to fall in glittering sheets beneath a sun the colour of cinders.

Lilith’s fingers tightened on the windowsill until the stone cracked.

—

Elara dreamed.

There was no clear landscape—only fragments.

Ancient gods and goddesses stood in a circle, faces twisted with desperation, pouring every drop of their power into a single, terrible seal. Grey laughter echoed between them, high and delighted and wrong.

A voice that sounded like it smiled through a throat full of ashes spoke near her ear.

“Why do you take such pleasure in pain, little one?”

Elara tried to turn. The voice moved with her.

“Why do you still refuse to open the lock?”

“What lock?” she whispered. “Who are you? Where is this place?”

Arms that felt both loving and endless slid around her from behind. A face pressed into the curve of her neck and inhaled as if she were the only scent left in existence.

“You are my seal crack,” the voice crooned, soft and fond and terrible. “Hihihihi… I love you.”

Lips brushed her cheek in a kiss that felt exactly like her mother’s. Warmth and safety flooded her for one heartbreaking second—then the same warmth turned into a deep, exquisite ache that made her want to weep.

The presence vanished.

In the distance the ancient gods still begged, voices overlapping:

“Do not do this—do not—please—”

Elara reached toward them.

“What shouldn’t I do? What are you talking about? Why didn’t you help me?”

No answer came—only the fading echo of grey laughter and the feeling of a lock somewhere deep inside her chest that had begun, ever so slightly, to turn.

—

Lilith’s hand was on her shoulder, shaking her.

“Wake up. You are dreaming. Wake up.”

Elara’s eyes opened.

The grey sun still shone beyond the rain-streaked window, and the taste of ashes lingered on her tongue.
