The Hero Given to the Demon Queen

Elara’s eyes opened slowly.

The first thing she registered was the heavy blanket covering her completely. She tried to push it down, but a cool hand stopped her wrist.

“Stay still.”

Lilith sat on the edge of the bed, crimson eyes studying her face. Elara’s gaze moved across the room, then settled on the Queen.

“Where is she?”

“She fled,” Lilith answered.

A pause.

“Did she do anything to you? Tell me the truth.”

Elara only stared at her, expression still hazy. The blow to her head made everything feel distant. As the fog in her mind began to clear, the light beyond the window shifted. The unnatural grey of the sun softened, gold bleeding slowly back into the sky.

Lilith noticed at once. She rose and crossed to the tall window in three long strides, staring upward.

“You damned Goddess,” she muttered. “I will make you choke on these mind games.”

She turned back just as the door opened.

Nyx entered quickly, breathing uneven.

“Sister—we could not catch her. She escaped.”

Lilith’s face darkened. She seized a nearby vase and hurled it against the wall. Ceramic exploded across the stone.

“How could you fail to catch her?!”

Nyx flinched hard.

Elara, still half-reclined, spoke in a flat, confused voice.

“What escape? She is right here.”

Lilith’s head snapped toward her. “Where?”

Nyx moved fast, cutting in before Elara could continue.

“Sister, the hero took a hard blow to the head. She is not thinking clearly. She must be hallucinating. There is no being here that you cannot see.”

Lilith’s eyes narrowed. After a moment she exhaled through her nose.

“Leave the room, Nyx. Leave us alone.”

Nyx hesitated only a second, then withdrew, closing the door with care.

Lilith returned to the bedside. Her voice was cold.

“You are in such a pathetic state that you cannot even protect your own body. Must I personally intervene in everything?”

Elara’s blue eyes focused on her with effort.

“You put me in this condition. My power is sealed. What am I supposed to do? If you return what you took from me, I can protect myself.”

Lilith let out a short, sharp laugh that held no humour.

“Any other requests, oh self-aware little hero? Shall I also bring you tea and biscuits while I am at it?”

Elara did not look away.

“You already conquered this world. Humans, goddesses, demons—none of them matter to me anymore. Return my sealed power and leave me alone. Stop forcing this. I do not want you.”

Lilith leaned closer until their faces were only inches apart.

“But I want you. And I will have what I want, whether you agree or not. I was the first to find you. I was the first to see you. Even if I have not claimed every part of you yet, the first still belongs to me. You are mine. Carve that into that small mind of yours. I will never let go. I am not the type to fall for your little games.”

Elara let out a tired breath and tried to sit up. The movement pulled at the ache in her skull. Lilith’s hand pressed her back down.

“Where do you think you are going? Stay where you are.”

“Something is happening in the world and I do not know what it is. I need to leave. Let me go.”

“You are talking nonsense.”

Elara’s voice gained a fragile edge of hope. “The angels and the Goddess… I am certain they came to save me from your hands. And you are terrified of it. Let me go.”

Lilith’s fingers closed in her golden hair, pinning her head firmly to the pillow. The grip was tight enough to sting.

“Archangel Amara descended, made two inspections, and left without ever approaching you. The Goddess is simply feeding the humans hope so they will pray and believe. No one cares about you—except me. Night has nearly fallen. I no longer want you spending your nights in this room. From now on you will sleep beside me. Every night. I want you there.”

“You’re hurting me—let go of my hair.”

Lilith released her at once and drew back, as if surprised by her own force.

“…Good. I am glad you understand.” She stood. “Your clothes have been brought. Put them on and come downstairs. We will have dinner.”

Elara waited until the Queen reached the door.

“Leave the room first.”

Lilith did not argue. She stepped out and sealed the door behind her.

—

The private dining hall had been transformed.

Floating lights of deep amber and gold filled the high space. The long table gleamed. Every place was set with silver and crystal. At the head sat a woman Elara had never seen before.

She was tall, statuesque, with long black hair that fell like a curtain of night and amber eyes that caught the light like polished resin. Her presence filled the room without effort.

Lilith took her seat. Nyx sat to one side, already dressed with careful formality. Commander Thalira occupied a place at the table for once, silver braid perfect, expression carefully blank. Elara was guided to the remaining chair.

The woman—Morgana—turned first to Nyx.

“You look unwell, little sister. What happened to you?”

Nyx’s answer was quiet. “I have been… worn down lately.”

Morgana’s amber gaze shifted to Lilith.

“And our Queen? Any news worth hearing?” Then her eyes landed fully on Elara and stayed there. A slow, almost disbelieving smile curved her mouth. “The hero. So the rumors were true. I thought it was a joke.”

Elara’s fork struck the plate harder than necessary. She began to rise.

Lilith’s voice cut across the table.

“Sit down. No one at this table will provoke or belittle anyone else. Sister—please.”

Morgana lifted both hands in mock surrender, still smiling.

“I made no insult. I only expressed surprise. In any case, your sticky little sexual affairs do not interest me. I will be silent.”

Elara’s jaw tightened. She tried again to stand. Lilith’s hand closed around her wrist.

“I told you to sit.”

Nyx reached for her own utensils with visible tension. Morgana’s smile sharpened.

“Very well. The topic is not the broken little hero. But since she is present, I will say this: an Archangel descends, the sun turns grey, then returns to normal—and only afterward do I learn the hero is here. I believe she is the cause of all of it. She should be killed. Immediately.”

Elara met the amber eyes without flinching.

“If you are going to kill me, then kill me. I am not afraid of any of you.”

Morgana’s pleasant expression cooled.

“Look at her. The weakling dares to answer back. My sister has spoiled you. I am not like her. Know your place.”

Nyx spoke quickly. “I do not believe the Goddess or the angels have any real connection to the hero.”

Thalira inclined her head. “If I may speak, my Queen… I believe it is connected. And the hero herself seems to wish for death. Perhaps we should grant her request.”

“Silence.” Lilith’s voice was ice. “You will not speak on this again.”

Thalira bowed her head. “Forgive me, my Queen.”

Morgana leaned back, amber eyes thoughtful.

“You are strong, Lilith. Stronger than me, stronger than Nyx, stronger than anyone else in this world. But I do not believe you can match the Goddess. If that bitch ever descends in person, I cannot even imagine what will follow.”

Lilith’s reply was calm and absolute.

“This has nothing to do with the hero. She is a powerless, ordinary girl now. No one risks anything for a defenseless human. Their only goal is to feed hope to the remnants so they will pray. Angels and goddesses feed on faith. This serves them.”

She turned her head slightly toward Elara.

“You will remain quiet. Do not interrupt. Be a calm woman. You are the most fragile thing at this table. Do not embarrass me in front of my sister. There will not be a second warning.”

Elara closed her mouth. After a moment she reached for Nyx’s unused fork, pulled it toward herself, and began to eat in silence.

Lilith surveyed the table.

“The matter is closed. Everyone will finish their meal, then retire to their chambers.”

The rest of the dinner passed in strained quiet. Elara cleared her plate quickly and looked up.

“May I have a second serving?”

Lilith nodded once. “Of course.”

Servants appeared at once. A fuller plate was set before her. She ate with steady, almost defiant appetite.

Morgana watched, eyebrows rising.

“Look at that. She has a healthy appetite at least.”

“Sister.” Lilith’s tone carried a quiet warning. “Eat your own meal. Stop needling the hero.”

Morgana smiled and raised her goblet. “As you wish. Apparently even that is forbidden now.”

Elara continued eating. Across the table, Nyx’s red eyes remained fixed on her, thoughts circling the same painful loop:

I failed again. Why will you not understand? I want you. I want you to be mine. I saved myself for you. Why can you not see how much it hurt?

Thalira’s grey gaze was colder.

Gluttonous whore. One day I will peel the skin from your body. That day will come.

And Morgana, amber eyes half-lidded, watched the golden-haired girl with open curiosity. The tip of her tongue briefly touched her upper lip before she looked away, heart beating a fraction too fast.

The grey sun had fully returned to gold beyond the high windows, but the tension at the table remained the colour of ash.
