The Hero Given to the Demon Queen

Elara ran.

She did not look back.

The cold night air of the demon territories cut through the thin bra and panties she still wore. Her bare feet struck uneven ground, stones and roots tearing at the skin. Every breath burned in her lungs. Behind her the citadel’s outer walls were already lost in darkness, but the memory of what she had left inside them clung like smoke.

I have to reach the Archangel… the Goddess…

I will be free. I will clean this world of its filth.

She turned north.

Human lands lay to the south and east. She would not go there. The north was colder, emptier, and far more dangerous—stretches of rain-soaked forest giving way to true snow further on—but she knew these paths. She had crossed them many times in the old days, before everything ended.

Hours blurred together. By the time the first pale light of morning touched the treeline, the demon border was far behind her. The forest that rose ahead belonged to the white elves. Mist hung low between the trunks, thick enough to swallow sound. Elara’s legs finally gave out. She sank against the roots of a large tree, arms wrapped tightly around her freezing body, teeth chattering hard enough to hurt.

She did not notice the eyes watching her from the higher branches.

Alvia, leader of the remaining northern white-elf pack, studied the half-naked figure below with sharp, cautious interest. The golden hair, the blue eyes, the unmistakable presence—even diminished—left no doubt. She dropped silently to the forest floor, long white spear in one hand, a short bow across her back. Her own silver-white hair was braided tight for movement, and her pale features carried the hard edge of someone who had lost too much.

Elara’s head snapped up. She scrambled backward until her shoulders hit the tree.

“Don’t come closer.”

Alvia stopped at once and lowered the spear until its tip touched the earth.

“You are the hero,” she said, voice quiet with something like wonder. “By the old lights… you are real. And you are here.”

She took one slow step forward, hands open.

“I do not know what they did to you in that place. But you are still breathing. That means there is still hope. We are not your enemies. We want the same things you do—revenge on the dark elves, on the demons, and on the humans who sold you.” She extended one gloved hand. “Take it. Come with me.”

Elara did not take the hand. She only pulled her arms tighter around herself, trying to cover what little the thin underthings left exposed. Alvia’s gaze flicked over her state and hardened with understanding.

“Bring her something to wear. Now.”

Two more white elves dropped from the trees, silent as the mist. They offered a heavy cloak, thick trousers, and a simple tunic of soft grey wool. Elara dressed with stiff, shaking fingers. She still refused Alvia’s hand, rising on her own power.

“I don’t know where I’m going,” she said.

Alvia stepped in front of her, blocking the path deeper into the cold.

“Further north there is only snow and death. Stay with us. We can break the seal they put on you. We can give you your strength back. Together it is possible.”

Elara stood very still. Wind moved through the high branches and stirred her golden hair. After a long moment she gave a single, exhausted nod.

“All right.”

Alvia’s face softened with genuine relief.

“Thank you. Truly. Come. You need rest.”

Elara glanced around the mist-choked forest. “There is nowhere to rest here.”

Alvia pointed upward.

High in the canopy, almost invisible through the shifting grey, wooden platforms and small enclosed shelters clung to the trunks like nests. Soft yellow light glowed behind shuttered windows. The entire settlement was hidden by the perpetual northern mist; anyone who did not already know the paths would wander in circles until they froze.

“How do you stay hidden?” Elara asked as they began to climb.

“The dark elves, the demons, even the humans—none of them care enough to risk these woods anymore. Or they simply forget we still exist. Either way, we survive.”

They reached a broad platform. Elara looked at the gathered white elves—every single one of them female, hard-eyed, and armed.

“Why are you all women? Where are your men?”

Alvia’s expression did not change, but something old and bitter moved behind her eyes.

“They are dead. Every last one. The dark elves allied with the demons and hunted them to extinction during the final years of the war. We are all that remains of our people. A few dozen. The end of our kind is very close.”

“Who did this? The humans?”

“No. The dark elves and the demons. We fled here to keep what little we have left.” Alvia glanced at her. “But we want revenge on the humans as well. When the rumors reached us that they had sold their own hero… we did not want to believe it. Then we remembered what humans have always been. Except you.”

Elara’s voice was quiet. “You’re right about them.”

Alvia led her to a small, private shelter at the edge of the platform—little more than a single room of polished wood, warmed by a covered brazier. Space was limited.

“I’m sorry. We don’t have spare dwellings. Will you share with me?”

Elara hesitated. “I…”

“We are both women,” Alvia said simply. “I saw no problem.”

“…Yes. That’s fine.”

Inside, the air was warm and smelled of pine and dried herbs. Alvia studied her for a long moment.

“What did they do to you there?”

“Nothing,” Elara answered too quickly.

Alvia’s gaze moved over her carefully—no open wounds, no fresh scars beyond the older ones, no obvious signs of prolonged physical torture.

“The Demon Queen must have hurt you badly. Yet I see almost no marks. What did she actually do all that time?”

Elara’s breathing grew uneven. The truth sat like a stone in her chest: Lilith had given her a fine room, food, clothing, and a twisted, possessive care that was somehow worse than simple cruelty.

Alvia continued, softer now.

“My older sister was taken during the last raids. If you are still alive, then perhaps she is too. She has ice-blue eyes, ears a little shorter than mine… she can almost pass for human if you do not look closely. Did you see her?”

Elara’s eyes widened. She had seen her—heavily pregnant, reaching through the bars, begging to be saved or killed. She had run past without stopping.

Tears spilled over before she could stop them.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I’m so sorry.”

Alvia stepped closer, concern cutting through her usual reserve. “Why are you apologizing? What is happening down there? Please.”

Elara forced the lie out.

“I never saw her. I don’t think she is there.”

Alvia studied her face for a moment longer, then simply nodded, accepting the answer she wanted to hear.

“Then why are you crying?”

“Because I got away,” Elara said. Another lie, softer than the first.

Alvia turned to the elves waiting outside. “Help the hero settle. She has been through more than we can know. She needs rest.”

She looked back at Elara.

“It’s over now. You are safe.”

—

Night settled early under the heavy northern clouds. Rain began to fall in steady sheets, drumming against the wooden roof. Inside the small shelter the brazier glowed, filling the space with gentle amber light. Elara sat wrapped in a thick wool blanket, a wooden cup of hot tea between her hands. She had already finished six. When she asked for a seventh, Alvia smiled—the first true, warm smile Elara had seen in a long time—and refilled it without comment.

“You really like that tea.”

“Thank you,” Elara murmured.

She took a sip, then another. The heat spread through her chest. Without warning her face crumpled and silent tears began to fall again.

Alvia set her own cup down. “You’re free now. You’re safe. Why do you keep crying? Be strong. Please.”

Elara’s voice was barely audible.

“Peace.”

“What?”

“Peace,” she repeated. “There is peace here.”

Alvia looked around the tiny wooden room, the rain, the mist beyond the shutters. “We live in the trees, hunted and dwindling. This is peace to you?”

“Yes.”

A long quiet stretched between them. Finally Alvia rose and began to undress for sleep, leaving only simple underthings. Elara’s body tensed at once.

Alvia noticed. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing. You sleep. I’ll stay in the blanket. I don’t want to trouble you.”

“That isn’t necessary. You need proper rest if you’re going to recover your strength.” Alvia’s tone softened. “You’re not afraid of me, are you? We are both women. I hope that doesn’t bother you.”

Elara swallowed. “No. You’re right. It’s fine.”

The lamps were extinguished. In the soft red glow of the brazier Alvia turned onto her side, back to Elara, and fell asleep within minutes, as if the presence of another body in the small space meant nothing at all.

Elara lay awake a little longer, staring at the low wooden ceiling. The room was barely large enough for two. Rain whispered against the roof. Somewhere far below, the mist moved between the trunks like a living thing.

She closed her eyes.

For the first time in many weeks, the dark that took her was not filled with the scent of ash or the weight of another woman’s arms.
