The Hero Given to the Demon Queen

Morning Fracture

Rumors moved faster than servants in the citadel.

By the time the crystals shifted to pale morning light, whispers had already coiled through the lower halls and the guard posts: the Queen had finally taken the human hero last night. The sounds had carried. Some claimed she had broken the girl completely. Others insisted the hero had fought until her voice gave out. No one said these things near the royal wing, but the air itself felt thicker with speculation.

Queen Lilith sat at the head of the long blackwood table, crimson eyes cold, fingers tapping once against the polished surface. The mood around her was brittle. Nyx occupied her usual seat, shoulders tight, gaze fixed on her untouched plate. She had not slept well.

Commander Thalira entered and bowed.

“My Queen. The hero refuses to leave her chamber.”

Lilith’s tapping stopped.

“Refuses.”

“Yes. She will not dress. She will not come.”

A muscle shifted in Lilith’s jaw. She rose in one smooth motion.

“I will deal with her myself. No one follows.”

The walk to Elara’s door was silent. Lilith did not bother to knock. The lock yielded to her will and the door swung open.

Elara sat on the edge of the bed in the same charcoal dress from the day before. Her golden hair was unbrushed, her blue eyes hollow and red-rimmed. On the mattress beside her lay a second set of clothing—scandalously cut black fabric that would have left little to the imagination. Thin straps. High slits. The kind of garment meant to display rather than cover.

Lilith’s gaze moved from the clothes to Elara’s face.

“On your feet.”

Elara did not move.

“I said on your feet.”

Still nothing. Lilith stepped closer, voice dropping.

“Do not make me repeat myself a third time.”

Elara’s throat worked. “I’m not wearing those.”

Lilith glanced at the revealing garments again, eyes narrowing.

“Who brought these?”

“The commander. She said I had to wear them. I refused.”

For a moment Lilith said nothing. Then she exhaled through her nose, a soft sound of irritation directed elsewhere.

“She overstepped.” She looked back at Elara. “You are correct. These are unsuitable. You belong to me. I will not have what is mine put on display for the entire court. From now on you will be given proper clothing—modest, clean, and chosen by my order alone.”

Elara’s expression did not change. She looked at Lilith with the empty stare of someone who had already spent everything the night before.

Lilith’s eyes drifted over the visible marks on Elara’s wrist and the faint scrape along her neck. A flicker of something like acknowledgment passed through her gaze.

“I lost a measure of control last night,” she said quietly. “The evidence is on your skin. It will not become habit… unless you continue to force my hand.”

Elara’s voice was flat. “I don’t want to eat.”

Lilith studied her for a long second. Then she spoke, each word measured and cold.

“You still believe refusal is strength. It is not. Let us imagine, for a moment, that I opened the gates and told you to run. You would not reach human lands. Other demons would find you first. They would not be as patient as I have been. They would take what they wanted and devour what remained. And if by some miracle you did reach the people who sold you…” Her red eyes glinted. “The men who handed you over would not greet you as a hero. They would lock you in a room and use you until you were breeding stock. You would birth their children in the dark while they congratulated themselves on reclaiming their lost weapon.”

She stepped closer.

“You have nowhere else to go. You have no power left that I do not allow. Now get up. You will sit at my table. You will eat. And you will do it without further theatrics.”

Something in Elara’s posture finally gave. She rose on unsteady legs. Lilith turned and walked out; after a moment, Elara followed.

In the dining hall, Thalira straightened as they entered. Lilith did not break stride.

“Commander. The garments you left in her room will not be repeated. Ever. If I see another scrap of clothing like that on what belongs to me, you will regret the initiative. Am I understood?”

Thalira’s face tightened, but she bowed deeply. “Yes, my Queen. Forgive me.”

“See that it does not require forgiveness again.”

Lilith took her seat. Elara was guided to the place at her left. Nyx’s red eyes immediately caught the marks on Elara’s skin. Her fingers clenched around her cup hard enough to blanch. For a second pure alarm flashed across her face before she forced it down.

“Hero,” Nyx began, voice a little too sharp, “what happened to—”

“Nothing of consequence,” Lilith cut in without looking at her sister. “Eat.”

Nyx closed her mouth. She stared at her plate and began to cut her food with unnecessary precision.

The meal set before them was rich—far richer than anything Elara had been given since her capture. The smell alone made her stomach twist with painful hunger. She had eaten almost nothing for days. When she finally lifted the fork, her hand trembled. She ate quickly, almost mechanically, cleaning the plate before she quite realized it.

Lilith watched.

“Another?”

Elara shook her head once. “I’m full.”

“You are not.” Lilith’s tone left no room. “You will finish what is placed in front of you. If you refuse, the consequences tonight will be less restrained than you have experienced so far. Do not test me on an empty stomach.”

A second plate was set down. Elara stared at it, throat tight, then began to eat again. The food tasted like ash and relief at the same time. Shame curled under her ribs with every bite.

Nyx could not stay silent.

“Sister, she does not deserve this patience. She has done nothing but defy you.”

Lilith turned her head slightly. “She is in a fragile state. You will not make it your concern. Eat your own meal and leave hers to me.”

Nyx looked down, jaw tight. Inside, something darker coiled.

Lilith addressed the room at large without raising her voice.

“This evening we will have guests of importance. The hero will attend. She will be properly dressed and presentable. Commander, you will ensure the arrangements. And you will remember the boundaries I have set regarding her clothing.”

Thalira bowed again, the motion stiff. “As you command.”

Elara’s voice, when it came, was quiet.

“What’s downstairs?”

Lilith glanced at her. “Nothing that concerns you.”

Silence settled for a moment. Then Lilith set down her goblet.

“Nyx. Escort her back to her chamber. She will rest and prepare for this evening. I want no further delays.”

Nyx stood at once, relief and tension warring in her posture. “Yes, sister.”

Elara rose without being told. Her eyes were still empty, but something harder moved beneath the exhaustion as she turned toward the doors. Nyx fell into step beside her, close enough that Elara could feel the heat of her presence.

As they left the hall, Lilith’s crimson gaze lingered on the marks visible on Elara’s skin one last time—then shifted to the doors through which her sister had just departed, expression unreadable.
