The Hero Given to the Demon Queen

Archangel Amara descended upon the northern waste in full radiance.

White light cut through the storm for a moment, bright enough to turn the snow into a sea of mirrors. Then, deliberately, she folded her power inward. A thin, perfect veil settled between the mortal world and the Goddess’s gaze—subtle enough that her mistress would notice nothing amiss, strong enough to hide what truly happened below.

She did not go to them at once.

She waited.

High above the white desert she hovered, wings barely moving, and watched the two small figures struggle through the snow. Let the cold finish what the demons had started. It would be cleaner that way. Kinder, even. The Goddess would never need to soil her presence with such broken things.

Time passed. The storm thickened. Amara’s expression remained serene, but her fingers curled slowly against her palm.

—

On the ground, Alvia felt the absence of help like a door closing.

She looked up once at the empty, howling sky, then down at the half-conscious woman in her arms. Elara’s face was scarlet from the cold, lips almost blue. Her legs had long since stopped working.

“They’re not coming,” Alvia whispered. The words tasted like ash. She adjusted her grip, hauled Elara higher against her chest, and turned deeper into the north.

“Hold on. Just hold on. We’re not done yet.”

Minutes stretched into an hour. Elara’s head lolled against her shoulder. Alvia’s own strength, formidable as it was, began to fray under the weight and the merciless wind. Then, through the swirling white, a shape appeared—low, dark, and real.

A cabin.

It sat alone on a slight rise, half-buried in drifted snow, but the walls were intact. A crooked chimney leaned against the sky. Alvia’s breath left her in a ragged laugh of pure relief.

“We made it—Elara, we made it—”

She forced the last of her power into her legs and ran.

The door stuck, then gave. Inside was a single room: a rusted iron stove, a small pile of old wood, a battered armchair, and one narrow bed pushed against the far wall. Dust and the smell of long abandonment filled the air, but it was shelter.

Alvia laid Elara on the bed as gently as she could and pulled the moth-eaten blanket over her trembling body. Elara’s teeth still chattered violently. Her skin burned with cold.

Alvia slammed the door, sealed it with a quick charm against the wind, and fell to her knees in front of the stove. Her hands shook as she fed it the dry scraps of wood. A small tongue of fire magic—weak, because she had almost nothing left—caught the kindling. Flame bloomed.

She collapsed into the old armchair, chest heaving, and simply stared at the growing fire.

Two hours passed.

The little room slowly filled with heat. Elara slept the deep, exhausted sleep of someone whose body had nothing more to give. Alvia remained awake, eyes on the stove, listening to the storm. When the last of the wood began to crumble into embers she knew they would not last the night.

She rose, checked that Elara was still breathing, and stepped back out into the cold.

The snow had lessened. A hard, clear dusk was settling over the white plain. There were no trees, no bushes—nothing but wind-scoured ice. Alvia’s breath steamed in front of her face as she set out, spear in hand, senses stretched to their limit.

She found the Frosthide near a pressure ridge: a heavy, seal-like creature with thick blubber and a dense, oily hide that burned almost like pitch. It was slow and half-buried in a drift. Alvia’s spear took it cleanly through the eye. She worked quickly with her hunting knife, taking the best of the meat and as much of the fat-rich hide as she could carry. The rest she left for the cold.

By the time she returned, full dark had fallen.

Elara was awake.

She lay on the narrow bed, blue eyes open and dazed, staring at the low ceiling. Her legs still refused to move. When the door opened she turned her head.

Alvia stepped inside, arms full of dark, glistening meat and folded hide. Snow melted from her hair and cloak.

“You’re awake,” she said, a tired smile breaking across her face. “Look. We got lucky.”

Elara’s voice was hoarse. “Did we… cross the north?”

Alvia set her burden down near the stove and gave a short, breathless laugh.

“Are you blind? We’re deeper in than before. I found this place while you were unconscious.” She fed thick strips of the oily hide into the stove. The fire leapt greedily, throwing sudden warmth and a rich, animal scent into the room. The remaining meat she kept. “Fuel and food. This will keep us for days.”

Elara tried to sit up, determined to help. Her arms shook. The blanket slid and she toppled sideways off the bed, hitting the floor with a soft, helpless sound.

Alvia was there in an instant.

“Don’t—don’t move. You’re not ready.” She lifted Elara carefully back onto the mattress. “I’ll handle it. You can help later. Your turn will come.”

Elara’s hands were still ice-cold when Alvia took them. The white elf chafed them gently between her own.

“Your hands are freezing.”

“…Yeah. I guess they are.”

Alvia found an old pot, cleaned it with a quick water charm, and set the meat to cook. The smell that soon filled the cabin was simple and overwhelming—hot fat, seared flesh, life. Elara watched her in silence for a long time.

“You can use magic,” she said quietly. “You could have crossed the north alone. You’re weaker now because of me.”

Alvia looked over her shoulder, expression firm.

“Stop talking about yourself like that. My sister used to do the same thing—always making herself small. Then she was taken. I still don’t know where she is. Probably in the demons’ hands.”

Elara’s heart clenched. She looked down.

“What is it?”

“Nothing.”

Alvia turned back to the pot. After a moment she spoke again, lighter, almost hopeful.

“We’ll take revenge on all of them. Hey—did you hear about those ashfalls? They’ve mostly stopped, but whatever that was… I think the Goddess is preparing her armies. She’ll come for us. I’m sure of it. She’ll send her angels and free everyone from the demons.”

Elara’s voice was soft. “I’m not so sure.”

“About the Goddess coming?”

“Yes.”

Alvia glanced at her, eyes bright with stubborn faith.

“Don’t lose hope. She will come. I read once that even a fragment of her true presence would destroy this entire realm. That’s why she sends angels instead. Those ashes probably terrified the demons. You’ll see.”

“I hope you’re right,” Elara whispered. “I really do.”

“Enough talking. Food’s ready.”

They ate in the warm glow of the stove and a few stubby candles Alvia had found. The meat was tough and gamey, but it was hot and real. Elara’s eyes shone with sudden tears at the first mouthful. She wiped them away quickly and managed a small, genuine smile.

“Thank you. It’s really good.”

“You’re welcome.”

Outside, the wind rose again. A new storm began to rattle the walls. Alvia fed more of the Frosthide fat into the stove; it burned long and hot, exactly as she had hoped. When the worst of the hunger had faded she stood and started toward the old armchair.

“We should rest.”

Elara shook her head at once.

“No. You take the bed. I rested enough today. Please.”

“Elara—”

“Please.”

Alvia looked at the narrow mattress, then at the woman who still could not stand on her own. A long breath left her.

“…Fine. We’ll share it. I can’t leave you on that chair.”

Color rose in Elara’s cheeks. “It’s only wide enough for one.”

“Then we’ll make it work.”

Alvia helped her shift until there was a slim space along the wall. She hesitated, one knee on the mattress, suddenly awkward.

“If… if you don’t mind. I’m taller than you. The only way we’ll both fit is if I hold you.”

Elara’s heart gave a single, hard beat. She nodded.

“It’s all right. Of course.”

Alvia still looked ready to retreat to the chair.

“Maybe I should—”

“No.” Elara’s voice was quiet but firm. “After everything you’ve done for me, I won’t let you freeze on that chair. Come here. We’ll stay warmer this way.”

Slowly, carefully, Alvia lay down behind her. At first the embrace was loose, almost polite. Elara felt the mattress shift.

“You’ll fall off. Come closer.”

A soft, embarrassed sound. Alvia moved in until her body was flush against Elara’s back, one arm settling over her waist, long legs carefully arranged so she wouldn’t crush her. Heat soaked through the layers of clothing. Elara’s pulse fluttered in her throat. She closed her eyes.

“Good night.”

Alvia’s answer came a second late, voice slightly unsteady.

“Y-yes. Good night.”

An hour later Elara was deeply asleep, breath slow and even. Alvia remained awake, staring at the dying candlelight. The golden hair in front of her face smelled clean despite everything—like snow and something softer underneath. Without quite meaning to, she leaned in and breathed it in once.

Her heart slammed against her ribs.

She froze, mortified at herself, then forced her eyes shut. The woman in her arms slept like someone who had finally been allowed to stop running. In the flickering dark she looked almost peaceful—fallen, luminous, and painfully human.

Alvia held her a little more carefully and, at last, let exhaustion pull her under.
