The Hero Given to the Demon Queen

The Goddess of Ashes did not look at the Archangel at first.

She stood in the center of the square, grey hair drifting in a wind that touched nothing else, and simply breathed. The air was thick with the scent of burned flesh, blood, fear, and the sweet, sharp tang of agony. She inhaled deeply, held it, then released the breath in a slow, satisfied sigh.

Only then did her golden eyes open fully.

Around her the ash continued to fall in heavy, silent curtains. The human crowd had already broken into mindless flight. Bodies lay scattered—some crushed in the panic, some still twitching. One man near the edge of the square had lost a leg beneath a fallen cart. He dragged himself through the dirt, screaming without pause.

The Goddess’s gaze found him.

For a moment she only stared. Then her face lit up with pure, childlike delight. She raised one grey-dusted finger and pointed.

“Look! Look at him!”

A bright, unhinged laugh burst out of her.

“No leg! Hahahaha—no leg!”

She turned in a full circle, arms spread, as if inviting the entire world to share the joke. The remaining humans only fled faster. The ash creatures swayed in place but made no sound of laughter. Alvia, still bound to the stake, stared with wide, broken eyes and whispered fragmented prayers.

The Goddess’s laughter faltered. She looked left, then right. The smile twitched.

The one-legged man had gone quiet from sheer terror, clutching the bleeding stump.

She tilted her head. Then, almost playfully, she crooked a finger.

The man’s other leg tore free at the hip with a wet, final sound. Fresh screams ripped out of him. The Goddess clapped her hands together and laughed harder, delighted.

“Yes! Yes, you understand the joke! Look, look how he laughs with me—so funny, so funny!”

She took the arms next, one after the other, the same casual gesture. The man was left a screaming, limbless torso thrashing in the dirt. Tears and mucus ran down his face. He begged for death in a voice that no longer sounded human.

The Goddess leaned down toward him, golden eyes shining.

“You’re laughing too! You really understand! It’s so funny—so very funny!”

When the man finally died, the sudden silence seemed to offend her. She nudged the corpse with her bare foot.

“Hey. Hey. Why did you stop? What happened?”

No answer. She pushed the body again, harder, then turned away with a theatrical pout.

“Fine. Suit yourself. I’m not talking to you anymore.”

Her gaze drifted to the charred remains of Elara’s father. She gave the blackened corpse a light kick as well.

“You too? You were laughing with me a moment ago. What changed?”

A soft, almost sad sound left her throat. Then she straightened, brushed ash from her hands as if finishing a mildly disappointing game, and finally turned toward Amara.

The Archangel stood frozen, wings half-raised, face drained of color. Holy light flickered weakly around her like a candle in strong wind.

The Goddess smiled.

It was not the bright, laughing smile from before. This one was wide, slow, and full of too many teeth. She began to walk forward, speaking in a language that scraped against the air like stone on bone. After a few steps the words shifted into something closer to the common tongue, though the cadence remained wrong.

“White wings… and a little leftover brightness leaking from you. You feel different. A small scrap of power.”

Amara’s voice came out thin.

“I don’t understand you. What are you? Where is the heretic Elara?”

The Goddess’s smile stretched wider.

“Are you asking about my little love?”

Amara’s blood turned to ice.

In pure panic she poured everything the Goddess had ever granted her into a single, catastrophic burst of divine light. The square vanished inside a sphere of absolute white. Ash creatures caught in the blast simply ceased to exist. The ground glassed over. When the light finally died, the place where the Goddess had stood was empty—only a thinning cloud of grey dust remained.

Amara staggered, breathing hard, almost the entire reservoir of her borrowed power spent.

“That is the price,” she whispered to herself, “of standing against the Archangel of the Goddess.”

The dust began to gather again.

It rose in threads, then ropes, then a swirling column. Within seconds the Goddess of Ashes stood exactly where she had been, reformed down to the last grey strand of hair. Behind her, the ash army rebuilt itself with the same effortless speed—hundreds of featureless figures rising from the settled dust.

Amara’s composure shattered.

“No. No, no, no—this is a dream—this cannot be—”

The newly formed army began to move.

They joined hands and turned in a vast, accelerating circle around the square, feet striking the ground in perfect rhythm. Their empty mouths opened and the old language rolled out in a single shared voice:

“Rha’zhul… K’tharn! Rha’zhul… K’tharn!”

(We turn… we offer! We turn… we offer!)

“V’krax… Gor! V’krax… Gor! V’krax… Gor!”

(Let it be given! Let it be given! Let it be given!)

Amara launched herself skyward with the last of her strength. She should have pierced the clouds in a heartbeat. Instead an invisible ceiling slammed down. She bounced back as if the sky itself had become solid, crashing hard into the ash-covered ground.

The Goddess finished knitting herself together and watched with bright, curious eyes.

She spoke again, almost gently.

“Why don’t you try begging a little? If you beg me to kill you, I might enjoy it. I could make you happy too. Why don’t we try? It sounds like such a good idea. I don’t know who you are, but those wings are so beautiful. I want them.”

She stepped close.

Amara tried to crawl backward. The Goddess simply reached out and took hold of the base of the left wing. There was no sudden violence—only slow, careful pressure, as if she were detaching something delicate and precious. Feathers of light tore free one by one. Amara’s scream tore across the square and kept going. The ash army’s circle spun faster in response, their chant rising with every cry of pain.

Alvia, still bound to the stake, squeezed her eyes shut and rocked against the ropes.

“What is happening—what is happening—”

The first wing came free in a spray of luminous blood. The Goddess held it up, examining the damage with a small frown.

“Ah… I ruined it a little. Sorry. Sorry.”

Amara sobbed, hands raised weakly.

“Stay back—stay back—”

The Goddess sighed, disappointed, then brightened again.

“But we still have one left.”

She took the second wing the same way—slowly, almost tenderly—while Amara screamed and begged and finally, brokenly, called out to the only name that had ever mattered.

“My Goddess—please—please—!”

Far above and far away, in a realm of soft cloud and endless prayer, the true Goddess of Light opened her eyes.

Her perfect domain shuddered. Cracks of grey light raced across the luminous floor. She felt the desperate, tearing call of her Archangel like a knife drawn across her own throat. For the first time in an age, something like fear touched her radiant features.

Miles distant, Lilith slowed in midair.

The northern horizon had turned the color of old cinders. An entire stretch of land was buried under swirling grey. Within that storm she could see shapes turning in endless circles, and above it all a broken white figure that no longer had wings.

Lilith’s hands trembled on the empty air.

She did not yet understand what she was looking at.

But every instinct she possessed told her that the world had just changed.
