The Hero Given to the Demon Queen

They had only just begun to rest.

Alvia sat with her back against a pine, spear across her knees, still catching her breath from the long flight. Elara sat beside her, legs stretched out, face tilted toward the weak northern sun that filtered through the branches. For the first time in days the air smelled only of resin and damp earth.

Then the sky tore open.

Light—pure, blinding, absolute—descended like a spear. The forest floor itself seemed to recoil. Birds exploded from the canopy in panic. The temperature rose in a single heartbeat. When the radiance folded inward, Archangel Amara stood before them in full glory: white wings spanning wide, armor of living light, face beautiful and terrible and utterly without mercy.

Alvia’s spear slipped from her fingers.

“Oh gods… the Archangel…”

Tears of pure, disbelieving joy spilled down her cheeks. She dropped to both knees so hard the impact echoed, forehead pressed to the soil, shoulders shaking.

“Elara—look! Our Goddess heard us! The Archangel is here—she’s here!”

Elara turned slowly. Her blue eyes were wide, empty of understanding.

Amara regarded the kneeling white elf in silence for several long seconds. A faint, pleased smile touched her perfect lips.

“Be still, last daughter of the white elves,” she said, voice like distant bells. “I can feel your faith from here. After everything you have endured, you still have not abandoned Her. That loyalty is… noted.” A soft laugh. “You are forgiven.”

Alvia lifted her head, confusion flickering through the tears.

“Forgiven? What did I do that needed forgiving?”

“Many things.” Amara’s gaze slid past her and locked onto Elara. The warmth in her voice vanished as if it had never existed. “But there is a small problem standing behind you. A problem that can still be corrected.”

She tilted her head, wings shifting with a sound like drawn steel.

“Why is the hero not kneeling? Why does she stare at me like a witless animal?”

Alvia scrambled sideways, grabbing Elara’s arm.

“Elara—kneel! The Archangel of the Goddess stands before us! Please—” She looked up at Amara, voice desperate. “Forgive her, Your Radiance. She has suffered terribly. When you descended in all your light and beauty she was simply struck dumb. Humans are easily overwhelmed by your presence. Please show her mercy.”

The flattery landed exactly as intended. Amara’s smile returned, sharper now.

“Is that so?” She laughed, light and cold. “How touching. Unfortunately there is a tiny issue that must be resolved.” Her eyes never left Elara. “The woman behind you is no longer the hero we once knew. She has been defiled by the Demon Queen. And worse—she took pleasure in it. She cursed our Goddess. She is a heretic who found ecstasy in violation.”

Alvia’s face went bloodless.

Elara’s mouth opened, words tumbling out in broken fragments.

“W-what… what are you saying? I never—there was no pleasure—I—”

“Do not perform for me, hero.” Amara’s voice cracked like a whip. “You may even be carrying the demon’s spawn. I find the possibility… intriguing.”

Something inside Elara snapped.

“SHUT YOUR MOUTH!” The scream tore raw from her throat. “NONE OF THAT HAPPENED! YOU’RE LYING!”

Alvia stared between them, trembling violently.

“There must be some misunderstanding, Your Radiance. The hero escaped. She came to me fleeing for her life—”

Amara’s head turned with glacial slowness.

“Are you calling me a liar? Are you calling the Goddess’s own Archangel a liar?”

Alvia’s hands flew up, palms open, tears streaming.

“No—no—never—I only meant—perhaps a trick of the demon side—please—”

Amara laughed again, richer and far more dangerous.

“So the Demon Queen’s little whore has already seduced even you.”

Color flooded Alvia’s face. “You—you can’t speak like that. You’re the Archangel of the Goddess—”

Amara’s hand closed around Alvia’s throat.

She lifted the white elf into the air with insulting ease. Alvia’s boots kicked uselessly. Her face darkened.

“Are you playing the hero’s whore now?” Amara asked softly. “I am offering you a chance. Leave her here and go wherever you wish. I have no quarrel with you. Be grateful for the gratitude you showed earlier—because of it, I am allowing you to leave.”

Alvia gathered what little breath she had and spat directly into the Archangel’s perfect face.

For a fraction of a second the forest went completely silent.

Then Amara’s expression collapsed into pure, incandescent rage. She hurled Alvia downward with all her strength. The white elf struck the ground hard enough to bounce. Blood burst from her mouth and nose. A deep gash opened across her temple. She tried to rise and failed.

“NO!”

Elara scrambled to her on hands and knees, gathering the broken body against her chest.

“Why?!” she screamed up at the glowing figure. “What is wrong with you?! What do you want?!”

Amara did not answer with words.

White light enveloped both women. The forest vanished.

—

They reappeared in the center of a human town square that had not seen this many people in years.

Word had spread faster than wildfire. Priests in stained robes already knelt in the front ranks. Soldiers held the perimeter. Ordinary men and women packed every street and rooftop, faces alight with feverish excitement. A wooden stake had been driven into the packed earth. Bundles of dry brush waited at its base.

Amara stood tall above the crowd, wings spread to their fullest, voice carrying like thunder.

“Prepare the stake! These two heretics will be purified by the command of our Goddess!”

A roar answered her.

Elara was thrown to the ground. Alvia, still bleeding heavily, was dragged to the stake and bound upright. Blood ran down her arms and dripped from her chin. The crowd pressed closer, stones already in their hands.

Whispers slithered through the throng.

“The Demon Queen’s whore…”

“They say she enjoyed it…”

“I heard she’s pregnant with demon spawn…”

“Filthy heretic…”

“Burn them both…”

Stones began to fly. One struck Elara’s shoulder. Another grazed Alvia’s already ruined face. The chant started low and grew like a living thing.

“Heretic! Heretic! Heretic! Heretic!”

Amara raised one hand and the noise cut off as if severed by a blade.

“Silence.”

Into that sudden quiet a single man forced his way through the front ranks. His clothes were poor, his face gaunt, but his eyes were locked on the golden-haired girl on the ground.

“Please—please, Your Radiance, I beg you—don’t do this—I beg you—!”

Elara’s head snapped up.

“Father—?”

Her mother appeared behind him, trying to drag him back, voice frantic.

“Leave it! Don’t interfere! Forgive him, holy one, he doesn’t know what he’s saying—”

The man shoved her away hard enough that she stumbled.

“Get away from me!” He dropped to his knees in front of Amara, hands clasped so tightly the knuckles cracked. “Please—she’s my daughter—please—”

Amara looked down at him with something like mild curiosity.

“So you still claim this heretic as your blood. You insult the Goddess with your very breath.”

She raised the iron brand she had been holding—its tip already glowing cherry-red from holy fire—and brought it down across the man’s shoulders. The smell of burning cloth and flesh rose instantly. He screamed. Elara’s voice broke into raw, animal sounds.

“NO—FATHER—STOP—PLEASE STOP—!”

Amara only smiled.

“Listen to our hero beg. How sweet.”

She spoke a single word of purification. White fire erupted around the kneeling man, so bright it left afterimages. He thrashed, still trying to crawl toward his daughter even as the flames consumed him.

“My daughter… my daughter…”

The crowd found its voice again, louder and hungrier than before.

“Death to the heretic! Death to the heretics! Death to the heretics!”

Elara’s screams climbed higher and higher until they cracked.

Then, without warning, the sound changed.

The sobbing warped. The desperate cries twisted into something else—something low and delighted and completely wrong. A dark, broken laughter spilled out of her throat, rising over the roar of the flames and the chanting of the mob.

Fine grey ash began to fall from a clear sky.

It drifted down in soft, silent curtains, settling on the priests’ robes, on the soldiers’ armor, on the upturned faces of the crowd. The first flakes touched the burning man and his agony visibly intensified—his screams climbing an entire octave as if the pain itself had been multiplied.

Elara’s golden hair, strand by strand, lost its color. Grey spread from the roots outward like frost. Her blue eyes flickered, the irises bleeding into a deep, luminous gold.

She watched her father burn, and the laughter that came from her mouth was no longer entirely her own.
