The Hero Given to the Demon Queen

Lower Depths

The seal on the hero’s door burned in Thalira’s mind like an insult.

She stood alone in her private quarters, the hour long past midnight. The citadel above had gone quiet, but the quiet only made the jealousy louder. Lilith had placed a personal seal on that room. Protection. Attention. Care. Things the Queen had never once offered her most loyal commander.

Thalira’s hands trembled as she opened the small locked drawer beneath her desk. Inside lay two pieces of dark silk—brassieres she had taken from the Queen’s laundry months ago, when an opportunity had presented itself. She lifted one to her face and inhaled deeply. The faint, clean scent of Lilith still clung to the fabric.

It was not enough.

“She protects that broken little whore,” Thalira whispered against the silk. “Seals her door. Heals her wounds. Watches over her. And me? I bled for her in the last campaign. I took scars that still ache when it rains. She never once looked at me the way she looks at that human.”

Her fingers clenched. The silk wrinkled.

“I should have killed her the first night. I should kill her still.”

The scent no longer calmed her. It only fed the spiral. Thalira threw the garment back into the drawer, slammed it shut, and left her rooms with sharp, purposeful strides.

The descent into the lower levels took time. The stairways were long, carved from black stone that drank the light. The air grew warmer, heavier, thick with the smell of unwashed bodies, old blood, and fear. Torches burned in iron brackets at wide intervals. The further she went, the more the sounds changed—muffled weeping, the occasional sharp cry quickly silenced, the low rattle of chains.

At the final checkpoint a gaunt demon overseer straightened and bowed.

“Commander Thalira.”

“Bring me a human female. Blonde. Blue-eyed. Young.”

The overseer hesitated only a fraction. “Most of the recent stock has already been assigned, Commander. We have one that matches—nineteen years of age. Arrived three days ago. She has not yet been fully processed.”

“Bring her. Now. And do not record the transfer.”

“As you command.”

They brought the girl to a private interrogation chamber deeper in the complex—a wide, cold room with a single chair, drains in the floor, and manacles fixed to the walls. The girl was barefoot, wearing only a thin grey shift. A black cloth covered her eyes. A silencing seal glowed faintly across her mouth. Her hair was a tangled mass of dirty gold. When the guards removed the blindfold, her eyes were a clear, terrified blue.

Thalira dismissed the guards with a flick of her fingers. The heavy door sealed behind them.

She circled the girl once, slowly.

“You look like her,” she said, almost conversational. “Not exactly. But close enough for tonight.”

The girl’s breathing quickened. Tears already welled in her eyes.

Thalira stepped closer, gripped the girl’s chin, and forced her head up.

“I am going to remove the seal on your mouth. If you scream, I will hurt you in ways you cannot imagine. If you bite, I will take your teeth. Do you understand?”

A shaky nod.

The seal dissolved. The girl dragged in a wet, sobbing breath but did not scream.

“Good.” Thalira released her and began to unfasten her own armor and clothing with methodical calm. “On your knees.”

The girl hesitated. Thalira’s grey eyes hardened.

“I will not repeat myself.”

The girl sank to the cold stone, shoulders shaking. Thalira finished undressing, sat in the single chair, and spread her legs.

“Come here. Use your mouth.”

“Please—” the girl’s voice cracked. “I don’t— I’ve never—”

The backhand landed open and precise. The sound cracked through the chamber. The girl’s head snapped to the side; a thin line of blood appeared at the corner of her mouth.

“You will not speak unless I ask a question. You will do as you are told. Or I will find someone who will, and you will watch what happens to them instead.”

Silence. Then, slowly, the girl crawled forward.

What followed was neither prolonged nor gentle. Thalira gripped the blonde hair tightly, guiding the pace with clinical severity, eyes half-lidded but distant—seeing another face, another golden head, another pair of blue eyes that belonged to someone she was not allowed to break. When release came it was sharp and almost angry. She held the girl in place until she was finished, then spoke in a low, cold voice.

“Swallow it. Every drop. My seed will take root in a worthless little vessel like you. Perhaps you will even swell with it. A fitting use.”

The girl choked, swallowed, and collapsed forward onto her hands, gagging and crying quietly.

Thalira rose, dressed without hurry, and looked down at the trembling figure on the floor.

“You served your purpose.”

She opened the door and addressed the waiting overseer.

“Throw her back with the unprocessed stock. No special treatment. If she dies, she dies.”

The overseer bowed. Two guards entered, seized the girl by the arms, and dragged her out. Her bare feet left faint smears on the stone. She did not resist. Her blue eyes were wide and empty, fixed on nothing, as they hauled her away into the darker corridors where the rest of the discarded waited.

Thalira stood alone in the chamber for a moment longer, breathing in the residual smell of fear and sex. The jealousy had quieted, but it had not died. It never did.

She turned and began the long climb back toward the upper levels, already thinking of the sealed door on the hero’s chamber and the woman who had placed it there.

One day, she promised herself, that protection would not be enough.
