Chapter 182: Night Attack ( 3 )

They didn’t know how long it would take, as each passing second felt like an eternity. Their backs were drenched in sweat, and their nerves were tense.

While they were waiting, Gao Yan had already received the report and was currently fighting against the Tatar soldiers. As dawn arrived, the Tatars had lost half of their soldiers and could only retreat.

At the same time, the Tartar soldiers who went to attack the villages were intercepted by Lei Fu. Caught off guard, the Tatars were almost wiped out by his soldiers.

Suffering a crushing defeat, the Tartar could only retreat. They thought the situation was already bad enough. But when they returned to the camp, they realized that their supplies were gone.

”Damn it! They actually stole our grain!” the Tatar Commander shouted in rage.

When he saw the kneeling soldiers, he kicked them. ”Useless!”

The soldiers didn’t dare to go against him and could only suffer in silence. After being kicked, they coughed up blood. Despite their injuries, Damir Aydar’s anger still burned.

”Guards!”

Hearing his shout, a group of soldiers entered the tent and bowed to him.

”Drag them out and whip them 100 times!” Damir Aydar said as he sat in his chair in anger.

The soldiers were terrified, but they didn’t dare to say a word, fearing they would be killed on the spot.

After a while, he finally calmed down and ordered his subordinates to track the grain and retrieve it.

Not long after, several groups of Tartar soldiers left the camp to check the nearby area. Unfortunately, while they were still trying to find a trace of the thieves, Fu Chen’an and his team had already returned to the barracks with the grain.

After Gao Yan received his report, he sent out 5 teams to help transport the grain back. Since they used horse carts, they were able to transport everything in 1 trip.

When he saw the grain they brought back, Gao Yan couldn’t help but laugh happily. He checked the grain and said, ”Store the grain in the granary.”

Turning to Fu Chen’an and his team, he nodded and said, ”All of you did a great job. You can go back and rest.”

”Understood,” they replied in unison.

Although their Battalion Commander didn’t promise them anything, they knew that this time, they had earned some merit.

As the sun rose on the eastern horizon, Fu Chen’an finally returned to his tent. Before he went to sleep, he took a sip of the medicinal water prepared by his wife.

At the same time, Yao Zhi was just starting her day. When she was watering the vegetable garden, she saw Yang Dalang arrive with Yang Erlang.

Seeing them, she opened the gate and asked, ”Brother Dalang, Brother Erlang, what brought you here so early in the morning?”

”Sister Yao, we came to inform you that the wasteland was cleared last night and to collect the wages.”

Hearing this, Yao Zhi nodded and said, ”Come in, please. I will go get the money.”

Both of them nodded and waited for her in the front yard. While they were waiting, Yao Zhi calculated the wages in her room.

The project lasted for 66 days, and the extra workers came to work on the 6th day. Since she didn’t know who joined later or who started first, she used an average of 65 working days to calculate the wages. The extra money would be counted as Yang Dalang’s payment for managing the people for her.

For men, there were a total of 137 people with a daily wage of 40 Wen, working for 65 days. The total was 356 taels of silver and 200 Wen.

For women, there were a total of 52 people with a daily wage of 30 Wen, working for 65 days. The total was 101 taels of silver and 400 Wen.

For children, there were a total of 37 people with a daily wage of 7 Wen, working for 65 days. The total was 16 taels of silver and 835 Wen.

The total wages she needed to pay were 474 taels of silver and 435 Wen.

Yao Zhi opened her spatial bracelet and took out the money. She used a wooden box to store it. She prepared 47 pieces of 10-tael silver ingots, 4 pieces of 1-tael silver ingots, and 435 bronze coins.

After storing the remaining money back into her spatial bracelet, she went to find the Yang brothers.

Seeing her return with a box in her hands, the two of them stood up excitedly.

Yao Zhi handed the box to Yang Dalang and said, ”Brother Dalang, I don’t know how many days each person worked, so I calculated the wages based on 65 working days. You know the details of how many days they worked, so I will leave the payment matter to you.”

”If there is extra money, you can take it as your fee for being the foreman of this project. If the money is not enough, just let me know, and I will give you more.”

When he heard this, Yang Dalang wanted to refuse the extra money. But when he thought about his wife’s words, he found it reasonable to accept them. After all, he not only worked to help her clear the wasteland but also had to manage the workers. Earning this extra money was justified.

With this thought, he smiled and accepted the money. ”Sister Yao, what do you plan to do with the wasteland? There are also 3 acres of low-quality land.”

Yao Zhi gestured for them to take a seat before she said, ”Regarding this matter, I have to ask for your help again, Brother Dalang.”

”Sister Yao, feel free to speak your mind. If there is anything I can help with, I will surely help you.”

”It’s like this. Before I start planting the land, I want to improve its quality first. To do this, I need easier access to water sources. So, I want to dig 2 wells in the areas far from the mountain.”
