Chapter 157: A Lifetime Is Too Short To Waste On An Unworthy Person

Feeling the fleeting softness on his fingers, Yang Sanlang’s body stiffened. He stared at her for a few seconds longer before he finally nodded. ”Then, thank you.”

”You are welcome.”

After the Yang brothers left, Yao Zhi locked the gate and went to boil water. She took her bath, ate her dinner, and went to sleep.

In the midst of her busy life, another day had passed.

Early in the next morning, Yao Zhi woke up before the first light. When she woke up, the sky was still dark. Today, she planned to visit the border market and see if she could buy something.

After a long period of being busy, she finally had time to relax and go shopping. So, she was in a good mood. After she tidied up the bed and her hair, she went to the kitchen to boil some water.

Today, she didn’t cook any breakfast and had 2 flower-shaped steamed buns and a cup of milk for breakfast. After watering her vegetable gardens, she led her donkey to the woodshed and put on the harness.

Since she was going with Yang Erlang’s wife, she brought a sling bag made from ramie and a waterskin. After she locked the doors and gate, she drove her donkey cart to the village entrance.

When she arrived, Yao Zhi was taken aback when she saw a group of villagers there. Looking at the sky, it had just started to brighten, so it should not even be 5 o’clock in the morning.

As she slowed down her donkey cart, the villagers finally noticed her.

”Yao Girl, you are here,” Wang Shen said with a smile.

”Good morning, everyone,” Yao Zhi greeted them with a polite smile.

Seeing that she wasn’t angry, Yang Erlang’s wife, Zhu-shi, walked over and said, ”Sister-in-law, everyone heard that I’m hitching a ride with you, and they insisted on coming. I hope we didn’t bother you.”

Yao Zhi glanced at everyone and saw that most of them were people whom the original soul had previously harmed or angered. Since she had made up her mind to wash off her bad reputation, she wouldn’t be angry over this small matter.

”It’s okay. Everyone, we should leave now. Please come up,” she replied with a smile.

Hearing this, everyone quickly climbed into the cart. Although the cart didn’t have benches like Xiao Hu’s cart, everyone was happy to save some money and time.

Since she had a good relationship with Wang Shen, Yao Zhi gestured for her to sit beside her. ”Aunt Wang, there is a spot here.”

Seeing this, Wang Shen smiled and said, ”Thank you.”

After everyone was seated, Yao Zhi touched her donkey’s back gently with a whip and said, ”Xiao Lu, let’s go.”

When everyone saw this, they thought that she was a novice. When one drove a donkey cart, they had to whip the donkey, or it would refuse to walk.

They thought that it would take a long time for the donkey to move. Unexpectedly, as soon as Yao Zhi poked its back, it let out a snort and took a step forward.

Soon after, the cart picked up speed. Since the load was heavy today, Xiao Lu’s speed was not as fast as usual. But compared to Xiao Hu’s donkey, its speed was almost doubled.

Noticing this, Wang Shen praised, ”Yao Girl, your donkey is still young but already this strong. You really take good care of it.”

Yao Zhi smiled at her praise and replied, ”It was thanks to my husband. He taught me how to raise and take care of Xiao Lu.”

When the villagers heard this, one of them suddenly asked, ”Sister-in-law, I heard that your husband rarely comes back. Aren’t you anxious?”

”Sister-in-law, why would you say so? My husband is serving the country. I don’t think there is anything I should feel anxious about,” Yao Zhi asked back.

”You are still young and should take advantage of this and give birth to a son. As long as you have the eldest son, you won’t have to worry about the future,” a middle-aged woman said.

”Yao Girl, we didn’t mean to be noisy, but you also know that there were women prepared by the court in the military barracks. It’s not unusual for some soldiers to fall for their bewitching and insist on bringing them back.”

When she heard this, Yao Zhi understood their meaning. Judging from their words, it seemed that this era had a practice of having military prostitutes.

”Aunt, what do you mean by that? Didn’t the law stipulate that they were not allowed to leave the barracks?” she asked.

The middle-aged woman sighed and said, ”You are still too naive. Even if the law stated that the court slaves can’t redeem their freedom, they could still be bought.”

”While those women were not allowed to leave the barracks, as long as the price was right, those officials who were responsible for them would still agree to sell them. If the soldiers saved up enough money, it’s not uncommon for those women to suddenly die of illness.”

According to her words, the people appointed by the court were not as clean as they proclaimed.

By dying of illness, those women could change their identities and regain their freedom. Even if they had to become concubines, it was still better than having to serve countless men.

Reaching this conclusion, Yao Zhi couldn’t imagine what kind of hellish life those women were living. For them to be reduced to military prostitutes, their families must have committed serious crimes.

Usually, only high-ranking officials or nobles would be able to commit this kind of crime. So those women must have been pampered daughters born with silver spoons.

From heaven, they were thrown into a living hell. The emperor sure was ruthless and cold-blooded.

After a long silence, Yao Zhi finally said, ”I trust my husband. If one day he really brings someone back, I won’t cling to him. A lifetime is too short to waste on an unworthy person.”
