Chapter 96: Herbal Chicken Soup

Sitting across from Fu Chen’an, Xiao Wei asked, ”Chen’an, why did the General summon you suddenly?”

”It was Physician Mu who was looking for me. He only wanted to take my pulse and check on my wound.”

”That old man is always acting weird. You should be careful when dealing with him, lest he use you to test his medicine,” Xiao Wei said in a hushed tone.

Fu Chen’an nodded and replied perfunctorily, ”I know.”

After he finished his dinner, he took a nap and went to do his night duty. Another day had passed slowly.

Early the next morning, before dawn, Yao Zhi woke up and went to wash up. When she was done, she filled the jars used to store the aged vinegar and millet wine with soy sauce and fish sauce.

Afterward, she went to boil some water and water her vegetable garden. Just after she finished pouring the boiled water into the drinking water vat, she heard a voice coming from the front yard.

”Sister Yao, it’s me, Zhou Ziyuan.”

Hearing the familiar voice, she opened the gate and said, ”Brother Zhou, you are here.”

Zhou Ziyuan nodded and asked, ”Sister Yao, are the goods ready?”

Yao Zhi nodded and led them to the backyard. She pointed at the jars and said, ”It’s all here.”

Seeing the jars, Zhou Ziyuan opened one of the covers and took a sniff. After he was sure that the amount was correct, he instructed his people to load the jars onto the cart. As soon as they were done, they quickly left the village.

The sky was still dark, and the villagers were not awake yet. So, no one knew about Yao Zhi selling sauces.

Yao Zhi locked the gate after they left and went to the kitchen. Thinking about her husband’s wounds, she decided to brew some soup to nourish his body.

Opening her system shop, she browsed for a while before buying 1 silkie chicken, costing her 10 points. Besides the chicken, she also bought a pack of Chinese herbs, costing her 8 points.

This pack consisted of goji berries, Chinese red dates, Chinese black dates, angelica sinensis, Sichuan lovage root, radix codonopsis, and astragalus. The amount of the Chinese herbs was for 1-time cooking.

She opened the pack and saw that there were 2 spice bags inside. One bag contained red dates, black dates, and goji berries, while the other bag contained the rest of the herbs.

Before she cooked the soup, she cleaned the silkie chicken first. Then, she put the chicken into a large pot and bought a pack of dried scallops from the system shop, costing her 5 points. There were only 10 pieces of scallops in the bag.

She also cut several pieces of ginger. When everything was ready, she added the spice bag, red and black dates, ginger, and dried scallops into the pot. Then, she added water and some seasonings.

Since she wanted to retain the natural taste of the chicken soup, she only added some salt, sugar, and white pepper.

She waited until the water boiled and took out some of the firewood to lower the heat. She opened part of the lid and let the chicken simmer.

40 minutes later, she checked the chicken. Seeing that the chicken had become tender, she added goji berries. She removed all the firewood, leaving only some embers. The residual heat would soften the goji berries.

Checking the sky, it was still early, so she ladled a bowl of soup and stored the rest of the chicken soup in her system storage.

Using the chicken soup, she made a bowl of chicken porridge for breakfast. Added with 2 boiled eggs and a cup of soymilk, she was full.

Today, she brought out all of her clothes and bedding for washing. While she was busy, the sun rose higher, and without her realizing it, it was already 10 o’clock in the morning.

After she hung her clothes on the bamboo pole, she quickly went to the kitchen and steamed some rice and millet to make steamed vegetable rice.

Today was the 19th day since she activated her system’s farmland. Tomorrow, her crops planted on the farmland would be ready for harvest.

At this moment, she already had a total of 1,020 tons of vegetables and 120 tons of rice stored in her system’s granary from 3 harvests.

Tomorrow, there will be another 40 tons of rice and 340 tons of vegetables added to Yao Zhi’s system’s granary.

There were a total of 10 types of vegetables she planted in her system’s farmland. After the next harvest, there would be a total of 136 tons for each type of vegetable.

Looking at the amount of vegetables, Yao Zhi decided to adjust the area used for planting.

She lowered the area used for planting vegetables from 5 acres to 2 acres. Then, she increased the area used for planting rice from 4 acres to 7 acres for the next planting.

When she was done setting the farmland, she took 2 carrots and a bowl of green beans from the granary. Afterward, she went to the vegetable garden and picked 1 onion, some scallions, a head of garlic, and ginger.

She washed and chopped the vegetables, washed the rice and millet, and then mixed the seasonings and water in a pot. When the broth was ready, she added the chopped vegetables, rice, and millet to the pot. Then, she used cabbage leaves to cover the mixture.

After the water was ready, she placed the pot on the steamer and let it steam for 15 minutes. When she smelled the fragrance coming from the steamer, Yao Zhi opened the bamboo lid and checked the steamed vegetable rice.

Using a chopstick, she checked the vegetables and rice.

After she was sure that everything was thoroughly cooked and the vegetables were tender, she chopped the cabbage leaves into bite-sized pieces, added a drop of spiritual spring water, and stirred everything until the sauce was mixed well.
