Chapter 55: A Great Idea

Zhao Xian took a sip of his tea before he replied, ”Commander Shen, I’m just a scholar with no experience of mobilizing the troops. With your experience in commanding the troop, I believe you can handle any emergency situation.”

”What’s more, the General’s mansion might send people to control the situation. You only have to focus on patrolling the roads and make sure the people with bad intentions are unable to cause a ruckus.”

After a pause, he looked at the man sitting across from him and asked with a meaningful smile, ”Commander Shen, this...shouldn’t be a problem for you, right?”

When he heard this, Shen Hao wanted to curse at this man. With only a few sentences, Zhao Xian pushed this matter back to him.

If he said it was a problem, then his reputation would be ruined. In the future, which soldiers would be willing to follow an indecisive commander without experience?

If he said it was not a problem, then he should be able to make a decision instead of coming to ask for a scholar’s opinion.

He wanted to make him take at least half of the responsibility. But before he could say anything, Zhao Xiao said, ”Commander Shen, it’s not early anymore. If you keep delaying, something bad might really happen.”

Hearing this, Shen Hao glared at him and stood up. With a flick of his sleeve, he left the county magistrate’s office in large strides.

Seeing this, the servant lowered his back and asked in a low voice, ”My Lord, is it okay for you to let Commander Shen handle this matter? What if something bad happens?”

Zhao Xian picked up another report and said coldly, ”Don’t ask things you shouldn’t ask.”

The servant quickly kneeled down, lowered his head, and said, ”This servant has crossed the boundaries. My Lord, please forgive me.”

Without even glancing at him, Zhao Xian said, ”Go get ten lashes by yourself. There is no second time.”

The servant heaved a sigh of relief and kowtowed with a loud thud. ”Thank you, My Lord. This servant won’t dare anymore.”

”Leave.”

While Zhao Xian was quite relaxed, Shen Hao was busy arranging the town guards. At seven o’clock in the morning, the closed gate finally opened.

The moment the commoners saw this, they quickly rushed to the gate, trying to enter as soon as possible.

Seeing this, the guards quickly pointed their spears at them, and the Squad Leader shouted, ”Line up properly and stop pushing. If you continue to make a ruckus, we will throw you into prison!”

Most of the commoners were afraid of the officials and the prison. So when they heard the threat, they did not dare to push each other anymore. Although they were anxious, they could only follow the order and line up properly.

With more guards guarding the gate, some people who tried to sneak into the town were caught and taken away. When the commoners saw this, they were scared, and those with bad intentions did not dare to try anymore.

Standing on top of the wall, Shen Hao observed the situation for one hour. When he was sure that there would be no problem at the town gate, he went to the grain store owned by Xue Ya’er.

As Zhao Xian predicted, there was a group of guards sent by the General Mansion to keep order. The commoners were grateful toward Xue Ya’er’s kindness, and with the guards watching them, everyone waited patiently.

Since the number of people who came to buy grains continued to increase while the grains were limited, they could only limit the purchase. Everyone could only buy five jin of grains once a day.

This situation lasted for a few days. On the fourth day, the market price of the coarse grain finally dropped from 15 wen per jin to 8 wen per jin, thanks to the smaller grain stores that opened their warehouses and sold their grains.

When the merchants received this news, everyone was surprised.

They planned to wait until the General’s wife ran out of stock before they sold it when the price increased again. Unexpectedly, they underestimated the amount of grain she had, causing them to miss the time to sell the grain at a high price.

Early in the morning on the fifth day, two middle-aged men sat inside a pavilion located near the bamboo hill in the suburbs. Because the bamboo groves had turned into a barren hill, no one was willing to visit this place in the sweltering weather.

”Brother Luo, have you heard about the grain price?” one of them asked.

Master Luo nodded when he heard the middle-aged man’s words and replied, ”I have heard about it.”

”Then, what do you think we should do now?”

Noticing his expression, Master Luo asked, ”Brother Wang, do you have a plan already?”

Master Wang nodded, leaned closer, and said in a low voice, ”Before the price drops any further, I think we should sell our grains.”

When he heard this, Master Luo hesitated for a moment before he said, ”Brother Wang, this...if we sell our grains secretly, will we offend Young Master Jin and others?”

Master Wang waved his hand and said, ”Brother Luo, we invested almost all of our family properties in this matter.”

”We bought those grains at five wen per jin before. If we sell it now, we are still able to earn three wen per jin. But if we continue to wait, what if the price drops to four wen per jin?” he asked anxiously.

This time, Master Luo did not reject his suggestion and went into silence. After a long time, he finally said, ”Brother Wang, since that is the case, then let us sell our grains. But this matter cannot be known by a third party.”

The moment Master Wang heard that his friend finally agreed to his idea, a smile finally appeared on his face.

He nodded and said, ”These grains will not be sold in my family’s stores. I plan to let my wife’s distant relatives handle this matter and give them some money for the labor fee.”

Master Luo nodded and said, ”This is a great idea.”
