Chapter 69: Shopping Trip ( 3 )

Not wanting his wife to be frightened, Fu Chen’an held back his aura and shook his head. ”It’s nothing.”

Yao Zhi took out ten coins and handed them to Xiao Hu while saying, ”Brother, here is payment for my husband and me.”

Xiao Hu reached out to accept the money and glanced at Fu Chen’an. He stared at Yao Zhi for a moment before he said, ”Come up.”

Today, the cart was packed as usual. Since most of the passengers were women, Fu Chen’an sat in the driver’s seat. With him sitting beside Xiao Hu, he could see the calluses on his hands.

The callouses were formed from years of wielding a sword. Just from this alone, he knew that this young man’s background must not be simple.

Xiao Hu drove the cart calmly as if he didn’t notice Fu Chen’an’s gaze. When they arrived at the town, he said, ”We are here.”

Fu Chen’an gave him another glance before he went to help his wife down. Before they left, they heard Xiao Hu say, ”If you want to take the cart back, you have to wait here at four o’clock in the evening.”

Yao Zhi nodded and replied with a smile, ”Thank you.”

Xiao Hu watched the two of them leave for a moment before he drove the cart to another location to pick up passengers.

After the news of the White Tiger Army winning the war and repelling the barbarians spread to the surrounding cities, towns, and villages, business in Zhu’an Town slowly recovered.

The previously closed stores were now open, and people had returned to their normal activities. Although the wealthy families had not yet returned to the towns and cities, the commoners no longer hid in their homes.

With so many pedestrians on the road, Fu Chen’an was worried that his wife would be bumped by others and hurt herself. So, he reached out and held her hand.

Feeling a broad palm cover her hand, Yao Zhi turned to the side and noticed her husband’s ears flush slightly. She smiled and thought that the ancient men were indeed innocent.

Thinking that his wife was doubting his intentions, Fu Chen’an leaned closer and said, ”There are too many people. It’s better to hold hands so we won’t separate.”

Yao Zhi pursed her lips and nodded. ”I will listen to you.”

Fu Chen’an was satisfied with her responses and asked, ”Wife, where do you want to go first?”

”Husband, should we exchange the banknote into silver first?”

They needed to buy a lot of grains to prepare the banquet, and their silver was not enough. They indeed needed to exchange the banknote first. ”Okay,” he agreed readily.

Fu Chen’an was familiar with the area. While Yao Zhi also knew where the bank was located, she let him lead her. When they arrived at the bank, it was already 10 o’clock in the morning.

The bank was empty, and Fu Chen’an went inside. Yao Zhi handed the banknote to him and waited in the lobby while he went to the back room.

Not long after, he returned with a box. He placed the box in his bamboo basket and said, ”Wife, let’s go.”

After the two of them left, they went to the animal market. Seeing this, Yao Zhi asked, ”Husband, why are we here?”

”Wife, since we have money now, I want to buy a cart. With this cart, it will be easier for us to visit the town.”

Yao Zhi thought of the inconvenience of walking far and agreed immediately. ”Then, should we buy oxen or a donkey?”

Fu Chen’an thought for a moment before he said, ”We didn’t have any land, so buying a donkey is enough.”

”Okay. We have a cart at home, so just buy a donkey,” Yao Zhi reminded him.

Although he didn’t see any carts at home, he still nodded. A cart costs at least 500 wen. Since they already had one at home, there was no need to spend more money.

The two of them walked while chatting and soon reached the area where the donkeys were sold. They checked several donkeys for a while before Fu Chen’an decided on buying a 5-year-old donkey.

He pointed at the donkey and turned to the seller. ”Uncle, how much is this donkey?”

The old man’s eyes lit up when he saw someone was interested in his donkey. He smiled and said, ”This nephew has good eyes. This donkey has already matured and has been trained for half a year. It could not only pull carts but also plow the field.”

Raising his hand, he said, ”You only need to pay me ten taels of silver, and you can bring this donkey back.”

The moment he heard this, Fu Chen’an frowned and said, ”It’s too expensive. Although the donkey is mature, its bone is not as strong as those in the other stalls.”

Hearing this, the seller realized that he had met someone who knew the stuff. His smile stiffened as he asked, ”Then, how much do you think this donkey is worth?”

”Five taels of silver.”

The seller was taken aback and said with a frown, ”My price is already the cheapest in this market. Nine taels of silver.”

”Six taels.”

The old man glared at him and said through gritted teeth, ”Eight taels and five hundred wen. Less than this and I won’t earn anything.”

Fu Chen’an pretended to hesitate for a while before he nodded and said reluctantly, ”Okay, but you have to give me a bundle of fodder.”

The old man hadn’t sold anything in the past weeks, and his family needed this money to buy grains. So after he thought for a while, he finally gritted his teeth and agreed. ”It’s a deal!”

While the old man prepared the fodder, Fu Chen’an turned to his wife and whispered in her ear, ”Wife, we are lucky.”

”This donkey is docile and has a good foundation. If we train it properly, it will be worth more than twenty taels of silver when it’s fully matured,” he added with a hint of smugness.
