Chapter 61: Fu Chen’an’s Return ( 3 )

Knowing that the soldiers must miss their families, Lu Qianxuan gave them days off according to their ranks. When they received the news, everyone cheered and thanked the General. Although they had to take turns, it’s better than nothing.

At this moment, Fu Chen’an and Xiao Wei had packed their belongings. Despite their fatigue, the two of them decided to go back as soon as possible so their families would not worry about their safety.

Before leaving the barracks, Gao Yan went to find Fu Chen’an. He handed him a small box and said, ”This is the reward given by the General. Take it back.”

Fu Chen’an did not ask anything and accepted it. He cupped his fists, bowed at him, and said, ”Battalion Commander Gao, please thank the General for me.”

Reaching out, Gao Yan patted his shoulder and said with a broad smile, ”This is what you deserve. You did well in this battle. Keep working hard, and you will have a bright future.”

After the brief conversation, he left.

Fu Chen’an put the box into his clothes and left the barracks with Xiao Wei. With their long legs, the two of them only needed forty minutes to reach the village.

When the villagers saw Fu Chen’an and Xiao Wei, some of them walked over and asked about their family members. Although they held a military rank, their positions were not high. So, they didn’t know the detailed list of the casualties.

Fu Chen’an was longing to meet his wife and was impatient with their endless questions. So, he said, ”I am sorry, I did not know about their situation. You should go to the barracks and ask the one responsible for listing the soldiers.”

Hearing this, the villagers quickly sent their family members to find out about the situation.

While some of them were rejoicing for their sons’ and husbands’ safe return, others were not as lucky. This war caused a lot of people to lose their fathers, sons, and husbands.

After they were finally freed from the villagers, Fu Chen’an quickly walked toward his house in large strides. When he arrived, he thought that he would find his wife worrying about him.

But instead of that, he heard his wife’s laughter coming from the backyard. Besides her voice, he also heard a man’s voice. In an instant, sourness surged from his heart, and his face darkened instantly.

He rushed to the backyard, not even noticing the crops planted in the yard. The moment he saw his wife surrounded by a group of men, his eyes were filled with killing intent.

He walked over and stood behind her. ”What are you doing?” he asked coldly.

Startled by his sudden question, Yao Zhi almost choked on her noodles.

”Cough! Cough! Cough!” She coughed for a while before she calmed down.

The moment Fu Chen’an realized belatedly that his wife had become so thin, his anger dissipated instantly. His wife had lost so much weight in such a short time. How worried was she?

With this thought, he reached out to pat her back gently and asked, ”I’m sorry, Wife. Did I startle you?”

Yao Zhi wiped the soup on her lips before she stood up and looked at her husband. Staring at his face, she noticed that he looked thinner and his skin was also darker.

Reaching out, she touched his face, covered with a layer of newly grown beard, and circled around him. After she checked him for a while and was sure that he was not severely injured, she finally pulled him to sit down. ”Have you eaten?” she asked.

Fu Chen’an shook his head and replied, ”I returned as soon as we arrived at the barracks. I have not eaten anything.”

Hearing this, Yao Zhi felt sorry for him. She poured a bowl of water for him and said, ”Drink some water first. I will make a bowl of noodles for you.”

”Okay,” Fu Chen’an agreed readily. He was not disgusted with her saliva and drank from the bowl she had used.

After his wife went to the kitchen, he turned to the group of men and asked, ”I wonder what you all are doing in my house?”

This was not the first time they met him. But before his marriage, Fu Chen’an mostly spent his time in the barracks. So, his relationship with the villagers was not close.

”Squad Leader Fu, we are hired by Sister Yao Zhi to build the kitchen wall. We will be able to finish the job today,” Yang Dalang explained.

Hearing this, Fu Chen’an looked at the kitchen. The previous open kitchen was now surrounded by a mud wall. There was only a small part that needed to be done.

Seeing this, he nodded and said, ”Thank you for your help.”

Flattered by his polite words, Yang Dalang waved his hand and said, ”We are paid five wen a day and also get a meal. This is what we should do.”

While they were chatting, Yao Zhi had prepared a big bowl of noodles and boiled two eggs for Fu Chen’an.

The braised pork and sauteed mushrooms were eaten by others. So, she opened her system’s shop and bought two portions of braised meat, which cost her eight points.

She opened the packages and poured the braised meat into a bowl before she stored the packages in her system’s storage. Afterward, she peeled two boiled eggs and added them to the noodles.

Thinking about him losing weight, she filled a bamboo tube with boiled water and added three drops of spiritual spring water to nourish his body.

When she came out holding two big bowls, Fu Chen’an quickly walked over and helped her carry them. Seeing this, Yao Zhi returned to the kitchen and got the bamboo tube and a bowl.

After the two of them took their seats, she noticed that everyone had stopped eating. She gestured to them and said, ”Everyone, the noodles will not taste good if they get soggy.”

With her words, everyone finally picked up their chopsticks and continued their meal.
