The Forensic Doctor Better Than a Detective

If we can secure two spots, it would both maintain Director Hou’s dignity and allow us to seamlessly include the candidate of our choosing.

Mr. Wang glanced at the personnel file still in Jiang An’s hand and immediately understood, decisively concluding, ”Two spots will also work.”

”In that case, you and Director Hou can each recommend one person.”

”Incorporating another outstanding young talent is a good step for the long-term talent development of our team.”

Upon hearing this, Jiang An nodded lightly and responded, ”Then I recommend this young lady named Li Yan.”

”She graduated from the Forensic Science Department of the Provincial Medical University, excelled in both character and academics during her school years, and also served as a student leader, demonstrating strong organizational skills and responsibility—she’s a promising talent worth cultivating.”

”Li Yan... Oh, that rings a bell.”

Recalling briefly, Mr. Wang smiled, ”Isn’t she the one who volunteered to speak first at today’s meeting?”

”Her enthusiasm is high, and her expression is clear, appearing capable and organized.”

”With such drive, her professional skills must be commendable.”

He paused slightly, his demeanor gradually becoming serious, and continued, ”In that case, this matter is settled.”

”Next, you have a heavy task ahead—especially with that unresolved case in Guangling City, which has been a ’tough nut’ under long-term supervision by the province.”

”The victim’s family has been persistently writing and petitioning for years, with strong emotions and a fervent demand to solve the case.”

”Colleagues at the petition office even communicated the situation with me a few days ago.”

”Although the Guangling City Bureau has repeatedly reopened investigations in the early stages, limited by conditions, they have yet to make breakthrough progress.”

”This time, I hope you can fully leverage your professional advantages, rise to the challenge, thoroughly review and tackle this case, and strive for substantial breakthroughs to provide the public with an answer.”

A moment later, Jiang An leaned forward slightly, asking seriously, ”Mr. Wang, regarding the case you mentioned, what’s the specific situation? Where are the main issues?”

Mr. Wang nodded, calmly explaining, ”It’s an incident of unnatural death that occurred at a construction site in the development zone six months ago.”

”The deceased was a thirty-five-year-old male worker.”

”Based on initial accounts from his coworkers on scene, it seemed like he collapsed from a sudden illness. Subsequently, we had a forensic examination conducted on site, which indeed found symptoms of coronary artery stenosis.”

”From the medical evidence, it suggests a disease-related death characteristic, hence it was initially categorized as sudden cardiac death.”

He paused momentarily and continued, ”However, the family strongly rejected this conclusion, and their emotions were quite intense.”

”On one hand, because the deceased was young, the main economic support of the family;”

”On the other hand, they doubted the ’sudden illness’ explanation, thinking the situation might not be that simple.”

At this moment, Director Hou interjected, ”Were there eyewitnesses who saw the specific situation when the incident occurred?”

”No one directly witnessed the moment of death,” Mr. Wang replied, ”but coworkers recalled hearing a ’thud’ and, when they rushed over, the person was already on the ground. Hence, there’s a lack of direct evidence to recreate the last moments before death.”

Jiang An quickly followed up, ”Is the body still preserved?”

From his perspective, if it’s a case from recent years, the remains might not have been cremated yet, which often can provide key clues to clarifying the cause of death.

”The case isn’t considered too old, only six months have passed.”

Mr. Wang confirmed, ”The remains are still there, as the family has consistently refused cremation.”

”Their reaction was particularly intense; first, because the deceased was just thirty-five, a pivotal age, and the primary financial source for the family.”

”Secondly, the incident occurred at the construction site, and the family repeatedly sought explanations and compensation, but since the preliminary conclusion was a disease-related death, it didn’t fall under work injury, so no compensation was given.”

”This also became the trigger for ongoing petitions.”

With a solemn tone, he looked at Jiang An and Director Hou, saying, ”Therefore, this time, we’re asking you to revisit this case.”

”We not only need to confirm whether it truly was an accidental death, but also thoroughly check other possibilities—like signs of homicide or suicide.”

”Regardless of the final conclusion, the facts must be clear, and the evidence must be substantiated.”

”Only with a clear conclusion can we have a solid basis for subsequent event handling, responding to the family, and coordinating with relevant parties, fundamentally resolving the conflicts.”

Upon hearing this, Director Hou and Jiang An exchanged a glance, a hint of gravity passing through their expressions, as if the weight on their shoulders grew heavier.

After a brief silence, Director Hou leaned slightly forward, speaking with a steady and determined tone, ”Mr. Wang, rest assured, we will not fail in this mission.”

”The entire team will give their all, striving to solve the case quickly and return with a triumph.”

”Hahaha, good!”

Mr. Wang’s laughter was hearty and loud, ”Hearing you say that completely reassures me.”

”I have always trusted your work.”

He paused slightly, his gaze lingering on their faces for a moment, then shifted the topic to make specific arrangements, ”I’ll have Li Yan and Zhang Lei accompany you.”

”They’re young, quick to respond, and can offer considerable help.”

”Your team of five will take one van, it’s spacious, and you can rest in turns and discuss the case on the way. If necessary, you can even set up a temporary office inside the vehicle.”

He said this while glancing at his watch, adding, ”Later, I’ll have the internal office prepare a set of relevant case materials for you to take along, so you can familiarize with the situation on the road.”

”As for the departure time—what do you think is suitable?”

Before he finished speaking, Mr. Wang, as if suddenly recalling something, turned serious in tone, ”The case isn’t considered old, but the petition department is urging intensely, and its social impact is gradually expanding. We must advance as swiftly as possible while ensuring investigative quality, without causing delays.”

Listening to this, Director Hou turned to Jiang An beside him, asking in a consultative tone, ”Mr. Jiang, would it be too rushed if we set off tomorrow morning?”

”Do you need time to prepare on your end?”

Upon hearing this, Jiang An responded almost without hesitation, answering promptly, ”No problem. We both know the urgency of this case; starting a day earlier gives us more initiative.”

”Leaving tomorrow, I can arrange everything completely.”

In fact, he originally planned to take advantage of this visit to the provincial capital to explore a few places tomorrow—after all, stationed in Jiangcheng long-term, it was rare for him to visit the provincial capital.

But the case is paramount, Jiang An’s expression showed no ripple, only continued in a deep voice, ”We will depart on time tomorrow morning, the case is urgent, everything else can wait.”

”Alright, then it’s settled.”

Mr. Wang appeared satisfied, expressing concern, ”Tonight, I’ll have a simple gathering with a few department heads.”

”Firstly, as a welcome for your visit and to wish you success; secondly, as a send-off for your departure tomorrow.”

”It’ll be hard on the road, let’s relax a bit before leaving to boost our morale.”

Director Hou nodded, a smile appearing on his face as he replied, ”That sounds perfect, thank you for arranging it, Mr. Wang.”

However, Mr. Wang lightly sighed, with a hint of sentiment in his tone, ”The pace of work now is really getting faster and faster, one case after another, as if it will never stop.”

Jiang An responded, ”Indeed, but it is also our duty.”

”Particularly with the operation to tackle unresolved homicide cases, it is to clear historical debts, providing an account for the past and paving the way for the future.”

”Once these accumulated cases are solved one by one, future work will gradually align towards a positive cycle.”

Upon hearing this, Mr. Wang nodded solemnly, saying, ”It’s reassuring to know you think this way.”

”Rest assured, after resolving this case, due recognition and rewards will follow.”
