The Forensic Doctor Better Than a Detective

The woman opposite lowered her head deeply, and the silence lasted for a long time.

Finally, she slowly raised her face, her eyes somewhat flickering, ”Well... actually, he has been restless since he was a child. His teachers said he had hyperactivity disorder when he was in school.”

”Later, as he grew older, we took him to see a psychiatrist. After the examination, the doctor said he didn’t have any significant problems, just that he sometimes couldn’t control his emotions and got agitated easily.”

Jiang An watched her slightly trembling hands and continued to ask, ”What was the formal diagnosis given by the doctor at the time?”

The woman pursed her lips, hesitating as she answered, ”The diagnosis... the diagnosis said it was ’behavioral regulation disorder’, indicating some difficulty in emotional and behavioral control, but it’s not a severe mental illness... really, he just sometimes couldn’t control himself.”

Jiang An’s tone was calm, but his question hit the core, ”Was there ever mention of conditions related to ’schizophrenia’?”

”No, absolutely not!” The woman quickly shook her head, her voice suddenly raising, ”The doctor never said that.”

”He’s not like that. He’s usually pretty normal and wouldn’t do anything outrageous...”

”Then, when he loses control of his emotions, has he ever displayed behavior that harmed others?” Jiang An pressed on.

”No, absolutely not.”

Her voice gradually lowered as her fingers unconsciously clenched the corner of her clothes, ”When he loses his temper, he might speak harshly, but he’s never hit anyone, let alone hurt others...”

After a brief pause, Jiang An continued, ”Madam, let me explain our working process to you.”

”During the case handling process, aside from questioning the relevant personnel face-to-face, it is more important for the Public Security Bureau to conduct a comprehensive investigation and gather evidence.”

”Regarding the situation you just described—about his mental state, medical history, and daily behavior, we will definitely verify.”

”This includes reviewing the medical records from relevant institutions.”

”You should know, hospitals keep their medical records for a long time, especially psychiatric department records involving behavioral capabilities, which can be legally retrieved and inspected at any time.”

”So, I hope you understand: telling the truth completely and honestly now will have a direct impact on subsequent handling.”

”If you are able to cooperate actively and make a truthful statement, when the case enters the prosecution and trial stages, the judicial authorities will fully consider your attitude and handle it according to the principle in law of ’leniency for those who confess voluntarily’. This is a responsibility to the facts and also a protection for your and his rights.”

Upon hearing this, Director Hou nodded slightly and continued smoothly from Jiang An’s words, ”Mr. Jiang’s analysis was very accurate, and he pointed out the key points of our investigation work.”

”During the case handling process, we not only listen to the statements of the parties involved, but also systematically visit and cross-verify his surrounding social relationships and daily interactions, so as to fully restore the facts and avoid biased listening.”

”The situation you reported has been recorded, and we will definitely verify everything one by one later.”

”The most effective way for now is to ask you to actively cooperate with our work and provide more detailed information. Only in this way can the investigation proceed smoothly, and you and your son can reunite as soon as possible.”

At this moment, Lu Shaohua, the Deputy Director of the East City Public Security Bureau in charge of administrative work, also took a step forward, solemnly adding, ”I am Lu Shaohua, the Deputy Director responsible for administrative affairs at the East City Public Security Bureau.”

”From a procedural and principled standpoint, we must solemnly inform you that the Public Security Bureau always adheres to the policy of ’leniency for those who confess voluntarily, severity for those who resist’, treating each case and every involved person fairly and according to the law.”

”In my official capacity, I assure you that making truthful statements and cooperating actively is the most favorable option for clarifying the truth and is most beneficial for you and your child.”

Following this, the office fell into a brief silence, with only the soft ticking of the clock on the wall.

After about 5 minutes, the woman who had been silent with her head down suddenly lifted her head, her gaze sweeping over the few uniformed police officers in front of her, and said with a choked yet clear voice:

”It’s like this... I’ll tell you everything. My son... he indeed has some mental problems.”

”Sometimes his emotions get out of control and his words and actions become chaotic, just like... like schizophrenia, and he can’t control himself at all.”

”In this respect, it might be inherited from his father... but he is not bad in nature, really! Even if he acts out with impulsive behaviors during episodes, like damaging the neighbor’s property, we always apologize and compensate afterward, never shirking responsibility.”

”But he would absolutely never harm others or commit unlawful acts! He’s timid and doesn’t even dare to shout at people... so please, you must look into this thoroughly and clear his name!”

Hearing this, Jiang An said, ”Madam, don’t rush yourself.”

”Currently, we have merely found some clues that need to be verified with him, but there are no conclusions yet.”

”We base cases on evidence and will not wrongly accuse anyone. Please trust in the professionalism and fairness of the Public Security Bureau.”

Subsequently, the woman anxiously leaned forward and asked, ”Officer, why have you suddenly brought my son here, what is it all about?”

”My son and I don’t have any idea... Besides, today we were really just quietly shopping over there, doing nothing at all, let alone anything illegal or against the rules!”

After she finished speaking, the three case handlers opposite didn’t respond immediately.

After a long while, Jiang An slowly spoke, ”Madam, ten years ago, the massacre in your village, you should have heard about it, right?”
