Back To The 80s: President's Doted Wife

Chapter 2024: Chapter 2026: A Single Slip Amid a Hundred Safeguards

The old lady’s been kidnapped!

It was like a clap of thunder out of a clear sky, exploding in their ears.

Cheng Su pressed her lips together and looked at Bodyguard Ding, staring at him until he dropped his head, his face full of remorse.

”What, you’re saying, Cheng Su’s mother-in-law? She’s been kidnapped?” Sister-in-law Cheng didn’t really know the inside story of what had been going on; she only knew that lately things around Cheng Su hadn’t been safe, like someone had them in their sights.

But now, her mother-in-law’s been kidnapped?

Old Master Cheng snapped out of it and said in a deep voice, ”Quick, tell us what happened?”

Kidnapping is no small matter. The other side might have nothing to do with the Cheng family, but it has everything to do with Cheng Su and Xiao Qi, because that’s Qi Taiguo’s biological mother.

So Bodyguard Ding recounted word for word how he’d gone out with Mother Qi.

”By the time I ran after them, the car was already driving off. I was in a tricycle; there was no way I could catch up with that van, and I lost them!” Bodyguard Ding said, guilt written all over his face.

Cheng Su was very calm. ”So you’re saying, over a bit of money, she let herself be sweet-talked away and got kidnapped?”

Bodyguard Ding said nothing. Cheng Su’s tone was even, but everyone could hear the fury and anger underneath.

”She’s always like this, loves to grab small bargains. If she ends up losing her life over a few coins, she...” Cheng Su’s chest tightened; she clenched her teeth, her chest heaving up and down with rage.

”Su, now’s not the time to blame her. The urgent thing is to get her back. She’s at this age already; she can’t take being jerked around like that!” Old Master Cheng said. ”Eldest daughter-in-law, go call Yaozu and tell him to hurry back. And call the police as well.”

Sister-in-law Cheng answered quickly and snatched up the phone to dial.

Cheng Su took several deep breaths, trying to calm the anger in her heart.

”You can’t really blame her. She’s an old woman who’s barely ever left the countryside in her whole life—what kind of world has she seen? Public security isn’t what it used to be, there’s more and more stealing and kidnapping and fraud; you can’t guard against everything. You can’t pin it on her.” Old Master Cheng was still trying to defend Mother Qi.

Fei Yin added, ”Right, she’s just an ordinary woman from the streets. An old lady with a simple, pure mind—how would she know how vicious the world is?”

Cheng Su said, ”It’s not like I haven’t told her before, to be more vigilant about everything. She... if it takes losing her life for her to finally see how cruel things are, then it’s already too late!”

Fei Yin patted her shoulder to comfort her.

Cheng Su closed her eyes for a moment, then opened them again; they were clear now. She was furious at her mother-in-law’s greed for small bargains, but she was also worried and afraid—afraid that that lunatic Chiang Qing would go all out tormenting Mother Qi, and Qi Taiguo wasn’t here.

If Mother Qi couldn’t hold on and died, how would Qi Taiguo accept that when he came back? And how was she supposed to explain it to him?

Cheng Su’s heart twisted into a knot.

”We all thought her main targets were you and Xiao Qi. We didn’t expect her to switch targets.” Fei Yin said.

Cheng Su had already calmed down. ”She must have tailed us already and knows that it’s hard to get at me or Xiao Qi, and Xiao Qi doesn’t go out much. And outside, everyone’s looking for her. She’s a cornered dog now, so she switched targets and went for the easiest one to grab.” She paused, then added, ”This is on me too. I didn’t think of that.”

”It’s not your fault. And your mother-in-law had someone with her as well; it’s just that even a hundred careful plans can have one flaw, and they seized the opening.” Old Master Cheng said. ”Since she was able to use this trick to hook your mother-in-law, could it be she’s met your mother-in-law before?”

”She used to be a military doctor in the army, and when my mother-in-law came over, she’d come by and they’d crossed paths.” Cheng Su said. ”Since she had her eye on Qi Taiguo, she’d surely investigate his family too.”

Chiang Qing had clearly figured out Mother Qi’s temperament, which was why she succeeded so easily.
