Back To The 80s: President's Doted Wife

Chapter 2018: Chapter 2020: The Cat-and-Mouse Game

With the matter of looking for Chiang Qing on her mind, after she and Zhan Qin finished dealing with miscellaneous company affairs, Cheng Su headed over to the Cheng family’s Yaojiang Group headquarters.

Cheng Yaozu was busy; when he saw Cheng Su come in, he only told her to sit first, while he continued talking with his secretary. The secretary was familiar with Cheng Su as well, knew she was Old Master Cheng’s goddaughter, counted as a young lady of the family, so he wasn’t surprised and kept talking calmly.

Only after he finally wrapped everything up did Cheng Yaozu down a big glass of water, then walk over to sit on the sofa. Seeing Cheng Su fiddling with the crystal ornament on the coffee table, he said, ”What brings you here?”

”I came to ask you if there’s any news.”

Cheng Yaozu said, ”We’re still looking. We already found where she was living before, but this woman is very alert—she ran.”

”The Shen family hasn’t found her either?” Cheng Su asked with a frown.

Cheng Yaozu let out a cold laugh. ”That bunch of useless trash. Maybe if it were on their home turf they’d be a bit better, but here in Guangcheng, how far can their reach extend? Even we can’t find her.”

Cheng Su said, ”Then she really is good at hiding.”

Cheng Yaozu said, ”Right now there are too many migrant workers coming to Guangcheng to work, at least double last year. All those village houses have been rented out, and the alleyways in the city too. With such a huge influx of outsiders, if she blends in among them and darts through streets and alleys, it’s not impossible for her to stay hidden.”

Cheng Su nodded. She also knew the population had exploded.

”Besides, the way we’re searching basically counts as startling the snake in the grass. Once there’s any big movement, any little stir of the wind and she bolts!” Cheng Yaozu said. ”That’s the downside. But the upside is, with us making such a move, for the time being she won’t dare act rashly.”

Cheng Su fell silent. That was hard to say—if the woman decided this was already a dead end, nowhere left to go, she might well risk everything on one last gamble.

”How about we go with a ’lure the snake out of its hole’?” Cheng Su was honestly a bit fed up with this cat-and-mouse game.

She didn’t like living every day on edge; it was maddening.

Cheng Yaozu’s eyes widened. ”No way!”

Cheng Su said, ”If we keep playing cat and mouse like this, she’s burrowing everywhere and we don’t know where she’ll pop up. As long as we haven’t found her, we’re stuck living in fear? Xiao Qi has even cut down his time outside!” The kid hadn’t complained, but she knew he was annoyed too—who wants to be cooped up at home all day?

”Anyway, you and Xiao Qi cannot be put in danger—that’s what Old Master Cheng said. Oh, and he also told you to send Xiao Qi to the main house. Since he doesn’t really go out much at home anyway, he might as well go keep the old man company!” Cheng Yaozu said.

Cheng Su didn’t dare agree to anything on Qi Xiaoqi’s behalf. ”I’ll ask him first,” she said.

Cheng Yaozu nodded, then glanced at the time on his watch and said, ”Want to go to the orphanage?”

Cheng Su was stunned. ”What for?”

”To see that child you sponsor, and see what makes her worth you caring so much,” Cheng Yaozu said.

Cheng Su gave an embarrassed laugh. ”What’s there to see.”

”Come on, we’re free anyway. Let’s go take a look. Didn’t Ning Ge find out it was that killer who wired her the money? Perfect time to ask if anyone’s been visiting her!” Cheng Yaozu stood up.

Like that, fine then. Cheng Su had actually also suspected it was that killer surnamed Mi who sent the money, she just couldn’t figure out why he’d be concerned about her.

Could there really be some kind of connection between the two of them? Something like close blood relatives?

Thinking of that possibility left Cheng Su a bit downcast. If that was the case, how was she supposed to face that man?
