Rebirth in the 90s: Her Counterattack and Redemption

Chapter 450: Chapter 268: The Prospective Father-in-Law’s Entrustment

”Dad, why are you here?”

”Dad?” Luo Ye muttered in confusion, her heartbeat uncontrollably speeding up. She carefully stole a glance at the middle-aged military man, only to meet his eyes and quickly bounce away like a little rabbit.

”Um.” Father Ye retracted his gaze and took a seat on a stool, ”Everyone, please sit down.”

Ye Xuan pulled Luo Ye to sit opposite him and introduced her, ”Ye’er, this is my father, Ye Jia’an. Dad, this is Ye’er.”

”Hello, Uncle.” Luo Ye quickly said.

”Hm?” Father Ye raised his eyebrows expressionlessly.

”Good day, sir!” Luo Ye quickly corrected herself.

”What?” Father Ye frowned slightly.

Could it be that Mr. Ye didn’t like her and was deliberately looking for fault? But if he didn’t like her, he wouldn’t have cooperated with Ye Xuan to fabricate a military report, right? Or was it that Grandpa Ye cooperated, but Dad Ye disagreed?

Facing such an event for the first time, Mou Ye was in a panic and at a loss about what to do, so she looked to Ye Xuan for help.

Ye Xuan reassuringly held her small hand, looking disapprovingly at Elder Ye, ”Dad, what are you doing?”

Luo Ye shyly tried to pull her hand back, but the harder she pulled, the tighter Ye Xuan held on, and she suddenly realized her actions resembled coquetry, turning her little face even redder.

”You just called me ’Dad’ just now, how did it suddenly change to ’Uncle’?” Elder Ye finally spoke up, but his words left Luo Ye bewildered. Wait, when did she call him ”Dad”? ”I didn’t...”

Father Ye interrupted Luo Ye: ”Who said you didn’t? After Xiao Xuan called me, didn’t you follow by calling me ’Dad’?”

”No, that’s not...”

Interrupted again: ”What do you mean it’s not? You clearly called me, so why are you regretting it now?”

Luo Ye was utterly baffled. Elder Ye looked so serious and stern, yet what he said was so incongruent with his image?

Yet, asking her to call him ”Dad” now, she absolutely couldn’t say it, so she once again sought Ye Xuan’s help with her eyes.

”Dad, expecting Ye’er to call you ’Dad’ right now is embarrassing for her. Let’s wait until we are formally engaged before she changes how she addresses you,” Ye Xuan quickly smoothed things over. He was secretly pleased with his father’s actions. His original intention was to feign ignorance and pressure Luo Ye to change her address, but seeing her anxious to the point of sweating, he couldn’t bear it.

”Alright, we won’t put Ye’er on the spot.” Elder Ye sighed lightly, ”Ah, got happy for nothing.”

”Uncle...” Luo Ye didn’t know what else to say.

”Dad, what did you actually come here for?” Ye Xuan deflected the conversation.

Elder Ye glared at his son, ”How can such a young man have such a bad memory? Didn’t we agree this afternoondaon what I’m here for?”

”Oh, right!” Ye Xuan hastily explained to Luo Ye, ”The truth is there were two things I needed to see you for. Aside from what I already told you, my dad also wanted to meet you. I... forgot about that just now.”

”Oh.” Luo Ye replied in a tiny voice, her face burning up. Was this bad man hinting at something that will make future Father-in-law guess?

”Xiao Xuan, go outside for a bit. I want to have a word with Ye’er alone,” Elder Ye started shooing people off.

Ye Xuan stayed put, ”Dad, what can’t you say in front of me?”

Elder Ye glared at his son, ”If I tell you to go out, you go out. Why all the unnecessary talk?”

Ye Xuan patted Luo Ye’s head, ”Ye’er, is that okay?”

Luo Ye nodded, ”It’s okay.” Privately, she lamented, in front of Elder Ye, dare she say ”It’s not okay”?

”If my dad says something to trouble you, or asks you something that makes you uncomfortable, ignore him. Remember to tell me everything afterwards,” Ye Xuan said, still worried.

”You brat, don’t trust your own dad that much? Get out now!” Elder Ye almost roared.

Ye Xuan stood up, hugged his dad’s shoulders, and patted him hard, ”Dad, if you dare to trouble Ye’er, I’ll have Grandpa deal with you later.”

”You little rascal, get out!”

Luo Ye was stunned. This Elder Ye had the most mismatched appearance and manner she had ever seen. By looks and demeanour, he should have been someone who didn’t talk much and was very traditional and serious, but in reality, he was quite the opposite.

Seeing that Mou Ye was sitting stiffly, Elder Ye said with a smile, ”Girl, don’t be so nervous.”

”Uncle, I’m not nervous.” Luo Ye forced a sweet smile, thinking to herself, it’s strange not to be nervous during the first meeting with the parents!

Elder Ye sized up Luo Ye, ”Ye’er, you really do look a lot like your mother.”

Luo Ye suddenly realized, her mom almost married this Ye Jia’an. My god, does that mean her future Father-in-law was almost her actual dad?

No, that’s not right, if her mother had married him, she wouldn’t have been born, and then there would be no Ye Xuan... Oh, what a mess, Mou Ye’s mind was a tangle of confusion.

”Ye’er, do you really like Xiao Xuan?” Father Ye turned serious.

”Huh?” Luo Ye looked blankly at Ye Jia’an, what does that mean? Could it be that because of her mother’s situation, they don’t want her to marry into the Ye Family?

Mr. Ye continued to press: ”Can you seriously answer this question for me?”

”Yes, I like Brother Ye,” Luo Ye answered affirmatively.

”Is it because you like him as a person?”

Luo Ye showed a hint of displeasure: ”Uncle, are you suspecting something? Do you think I am interested in the Ye Family’s background? Is that the impression I give you?”

Ye Jiaxuan sighed: ”Ye’er, you misunderstood. I’m worried that you agreed to him out of gratitude because Xiao Xuan helped your family.

If that’s the case, it’s not fair to both you and Xiao Xuan. That child, if he truly sets his heart on someone, he’ll definitely charge ahead unwaveringly. I don’t want him to get hurt in the future.”

Luo Ye’s expression softened: ”Uncle, I would not jest with a matter as serious as marriage. You don’t repay kindness this way.

I can assure you, Uncle, that I like Brother Ye as a person. Although I will only turn 18 after the New Year, I can absolutely take responsibility for my words and actions!”

”Although we are meeting for the first time, I am very aware of many things about Ye’er, and I certainly won’t underestimate you because of your age.

Since Ye’er says she likes Xiao Xuan for who he is, then I am relieved. Not to hide it from you, we’ve always been worried about Xiao Xuan’s marriage.

He’s never shown interest in any girl as he grew up, including during his adolescence, he would hardly pay attention to girls.

This child is smart, we’ve never had to worry about his studies or career, but it’s just this matter that leaves us parents uneasy. We didn’t dare ask him.

Before, there were quite a few people who came to propose marriage to the Ye Family, but every time he would refuse without even meeting them. This is also the fundamental reason why we agreed so readily when he proposed to pretend to be Ye’er’s boyfriend.

Ye’er, if you truly like Xiao Xuan, you two must support each other and walk the path together. From today on, as an uncle, I formally entrust him to you. I hope that no matter what obstacles you face or conflicts arise in the future, you will not let go of his hand, can you do that?”

”I can.” Luo Ye nodded, the doubt in her eyes clear to see. She believed that this last sentence from Ye Jia’an was not said on a whim.

”Don’t overthink it. I am just giving you a precautionary warning in advance. Both of you are attractive, intelligent children and will inevitably attract suitors. Uncle doesn’t want your relationship to be affected by some external factors.”

”I understand, Uncle,” Luo Ye replied.

Ye Jia’an hesitated: ”Your mother... how is your father?”

”They are both doing well, thank you for your concern, Uncle.”

”We’re going to be family from now on, what’s there to be courteous about?” Ye Jia’an said with a smile as he stood up. ”I won’t disturb you any longer, or else that kid will complain to his grandpa.”

”Uncle!” Luo Ye’s face turned bright red all at once, that comment was too blunt.

”Girl, Uncle will only talk like this if I have accepted someone. In time, you’ll understand,” Ye Jia’an said as he walked out.

”Uncle, let me walk you out!” Luo Ye quickly followed.

”Dad, are you leaving?” Ye Xuan appeared at the entrance of the tent.

”Son, you weren’t eavesdropping the whole time, were you?” Ye Jia’an looked suspiciously at his son.

”Dad, am I the kind of person who would do that? I just thought it was about time and came over to check. Who knew I would run into you? Besides, even if I wanted to eavesdrop, I wouldn’t have heard anything, you can try standing outside the tent if you don’t believe me.” Ye Xuan stepped up and put his arm around Luo Ye’s shoulder: ”Ye’er, Comrade Ye Jia’an didn’t give you a hard time, did he?”

Luo Ye smiled sweetly: ”No, just had a little chat with Uncle.”

”Dad, no need to see you off, I’ve got something to talk to Ye’er about.”

”Stinky boy, got a wife and forgot your dad,” Ye Jia’an’s voice faded as he disappeared from view.

Luo Ye discontentedly pouted: ”Brother Ye, how am I supposed to face Uncle after this?”

”Ye’er, you’ll understand after a while. My dad and I have always interacted like this. Perhaps... it’s only when we are together that we can both feel a bit more relaxed.” Ye Xuan pulled Luo Ye to sit down: ”Tell me, what did my dad talk to you about?”

Luo Ye playfully smiled: ”Want to know?”

”Of course, I want to know everything about my precious Ye’er.”

Luo Ye shivered: ”Brother Ye, I really didn’t see it coming that you could say such cheesy stuff.”

”Nothing is cheesy when it’s said to Ye’er.”

Seeing that Ye Xuan was determined to continue being cheesy, Luo Ye didn’t dare tease further and answered his earlier question: ”Uncle told me all about your glorious past, including writing love letters to girls in elementary school, holding hands with girls in middle school, in college you and the girls...”

”Stop!” Ye Xuan hurriedly interrupted: ”Don’t make stuff up anymore, the person you’re talking about is Feng Tianzhi, not me. Spill the beans about what you really talked about with my dad, or I may have to resort to torture.”

”Already ’my dad’, huh...” Luo Ye stuck out her tongue: ”Boss Ye, the shining image you established in my heart has completely crumbled.”
