Rebirth in the 90s: Her Counterattack and Redemption

Chapter 436: Chapter 259: Success

”Time really crawls, why hasn’t it gotten dark yet?” Little Bei shuffled closer to Luo Ye, twisting her waist, ”Quack quack quack...” Suddenly, a frenzied croaking came from underneath her, startling her into lifting her body as a black and shiny toad slowly crawled out.

Little Bei crouched down, daring not to sit back: ”Squad leader, please check if there are any more beneath me?”

”Pfft!” The three of them burst into laughter together. They were currently lying on a small hillside on the flank of Division A’s station. These past few days, they had been lurking here—an area that allowed them to overlook the entire station and was quite safe.

”Don’t laugh, toads are beneficial creatures. Even if I’m starving, I wouldn’t see them and get green in the eyes.”

Luo Ye made a symbolic check underneath her and then pressed her down with a laugh: ”Just lie down quietly, there aren’t that many little toads for you to squash.”

”You think it’s too small, not even enough to fill the gaps between your teeth, right?” Sisi said while poking a little toad that crawled up in front of her with a small stick.

”Quack!” The little toad’s body immediately puffed up.

”No... really? It got offended because I called it too small?” Sisi chuckled and poked it again.

”Quack!” The toad’s body puffed up even more.

”Not bad, let’s see how big it can get.” Sisi kept poking the little toad, and soon, the little creature swelled up like a balloon about to burst.

”Stop bothering it.” Luo Ye took the stick from Sisi’s hand: ”If it really bursts, it’ll spray all over your face, disgusting you to death.”

”Hehe...” Little Bei poked the slightly deflated toad, ”It won’t burst, I used to love playing with these as a kid. Back home, we called them ’puffed toads’, they stopped moving once they swelled to a certain extent.”

Lu Jian gave a thumbs up: ”Such a small creature, and you guys are having a blast. I’m impressed.”

”It’s just me being bored and distracting myself,” Little Bei sniffed, ”This delicious mutton smell is simply killing me.”

Luo Ye also couldn’t help swallowing his saliva, ”Hang in there, the mutton isn’t ours, neither is the wool, only little toads are our share.”

”Do you want to eat it? If you really want, I’ll peel its skin off for you, remove its guts...” Sisi said earnestly.

”Stop, stop, stop!” Luo Ye quickly interrupted: ”I’m not that desperately hungry.”

The more they tried to forget about hunger, the more intensely the delicious mutton smell invaded their nostrils, and their stomachs protested loudly with ”gurgling” sounds.

”Let’s search the backpack again to see if we can find any stored food,” Luo Ye said as he began searching every nook and cranny of his backpack.

Lu Jian spread his hands: ”I’ve flipped through it more than ten times already.”

”Me too.” Little Bei rubbed her stomach listlessly: ”There are two girls in our class from around here who keep talking about losing weight. If we drop them here for three days, they definitely won’t think about dieting anymore.”

Luo Ye pulled out two pieces of chocolate from a corner of his bag, closed his eyes, and took a deep breath, ”I still have two pieces of chocolate, one for me and Little Bei, one for Sisi and Lu Jian.”

”Squad leader, you’re really great!”

”We didn’t get issued any chocolate, this must be your own stash, or did someone give it to you?”

Luo Ye scolded: ”Why so many questions, just be glad we have something to eat.”

Sisi and Little Bei looked at each other, sticking their tongues out and saying no more.

When extremely hungry, having a bit of food to munch on eases the discomfort quite a bit. After the chocolate, their spirit improved noticeably.

As the night drew completely dark, Lu Jian sat up: ”I feel fine now, but our action is scheduled around two in the morning, we’ll definitely be hungry again by then... Squad leader, since the defense here isn’t very tight, could we get some food before we set off?”

Luo Ye pondered for a moment, ”Alright, based on our observation these past few days, no supplies have come in today. Between eight to ten, no one’s in the cooking tent, let’s use this time to act.”

”Agreed.” Once they reached a consensus, they laid back on the grass, quietly waiting for the time to act. For them now, saving energy is crucial.

At eight-thirty, the four of them stealthily infiltrated the station, familiarly heading towards the cooking tent. They gently lifted the tent flap, and the first thing that met their eyes were four eerily glowing green lights.

”Run!” Luo Ye whispered, pushing them quickly to retreat the way they came.

Two agile figures chased after them, halting at the foot of the hill.

”Thank goodness those two dogs only chased and didn’t bark. Otherwise, we’d be done for,” Little Bei sat down abruptly, breathing heavily.

”Thank goodness for the squad leader’s chocolate earlier, otherwise, we’d be done for,” Lu Jian collapsed on the ground: ”It’s my fault for suggesting this idea. Not only did we not find food, but we also wasted energy.”

”Forget it, it’s done. Let’s dig up some wild vegetables to stave off the hunger, can’t be picky now,” Luo Ye scratched her head irritably, feeling like they were monkeys trapped in a cage, bouncing around cheerfully but never breaking free.

...

At one-thirty in the morning, Luo Ye and her team reached their destination. Only upon close inspection did they realize that, besides those two tents, there were a massive tent and a medium-sized tent nestled in a dip below the hill. The areas were brightly lit and bustling inside—the large one was probably the headquarters, the medium-sized, possibly an advanced control room.

”Stick to the original plan, let’s move.” Four hands joined together and then quickly separated, Lu Jian and Sisi headed to a clearly visible left flank, while Luo Ye and Little Bei advanced towards a darker right flank.

”Squad leader, if there’s danger, don’t worry about me,” Little Bei murmured as she followed behind Luo Ye.

”Understood.” Luo Ye responded tersely, cautiously advancing through the dark.

On the other side, Ji Sisi and Lu Jian seized an opportunity to evade several patrol guards and successfully reached the outside of a large tent. Just as they were about to peek inside, a familiar voice came from behind, ”Feeling satisfied?”

”Yu Na?” Ji Sisi turned around to see Yu Na’s smug smile, accompanied by Wang Tianlin and Li Midong, with guns pointing at her and Lu Jian.

Yu Na nodded happily, ”That’s right, you were spotted as soon as you appeared. Didn’t you think the guard patrols were too easy?”

”How did you discover us?” Ji Sisi asked, puzzled.

”By your figures!” Yu Na answered briefly, not elaborating further.

”So that was it...” Ji Sisi said, squatting down and kicking toward the wrists of Wang Tianlin and Li Midong, who were caught off guard and took the blows squarely.

Seeing this, Yu Na swiftly stepped forward to fight Ji Sisi, while Lu Jian turned to engage Wang Tianlin and Li Midong, with other soldiers alerted by the noise running over...

”Ji Sisi and Lu Jian are down.” Hearing Ji Sisi’s loud shout, Luo Ye sighed, understanding she was reminding her.

”It’s just the two of us now, Squad Leader. Do you think our mission is considered complete or not?”

”In war, we wouldn’t have just sent a few of us to take down the enemy’s headquarters, so, do you think our mission is complete or not?”

”Got it, the moment we entered the Red Army base, we’ve already won.”

”Of course!” Luo Ye patted her backpack, ”The radio is still with me. Who dares to call us cowards? Each step we take now is a huge victory!”

Two patrolling soldiers approached, Luo Ye stopped and inspected them closely, whispering, ”Little Bei, one on the left, one on the right, flank and eliminate quickly!”

”Yes!”

The soldiers hadn’t even realized what was happening before they were subdued by Luo Ye and Li Xiaobei. ”You’re ’killed’, no talking!”

...

Five minutes later, Luo Ye and Li Xiaobei, dressed in Red Army uniforms, started patrolling conspicuously.

”Squad Leader, we passed several patrols, and you didn’t take action. Why did you target those two?” Li Xiaobei asked, puzzled.

”You could tell they were new recruits by the way they walked, inexperienced.”

”Squad Leader, you even know this, that’s amazing!”

”Observe more and you’ll recognize it too. A seasoned soldier’s spirit is completely different. There’s a saying, ’the weasel only goes for the sick duck’, we might say we learned from the Yellow Immortal.”

”Squad Leader, I feel like you know everything.”

Luo Ye patted Li Xiaobei, ”Prepare to enter the micro-control room. Remember, as soon as the curtain is lifted, quickly throw the poison gas bombs. It’s better to overkill a thousand than to let one go. There’s no point in dragging this out.”

”Yes!” Li Xiaobei patted his chest, ”Why am I so nervous?”

”Just think, whether we get caught or not doesn’t matter, just relax.”

”Yes!” Li Xiaobei tried to regulate his breathing to appear more natural.

”No soldiers allowed inside, stay away from here!” Two soldiers guarding the entrance yelled at them as they approached.

”Yes!” The duo responded but abruptly charged forward, repeating the same trick and subdued the unaware soldiers.

As the curtain was lifted, a female soldier turned around to look at them, displeasure on her face, ”How did you get in here? Didn’t they say...” She didn’t finish her sentence as Li Xiaobei’s poison gas bomb and Luo Ye’s two grenades were thrown, followed by a burst of gunfire...

”You’re all dead or unconscious, no moving!” Luo Ye, her face covered by a gas mask, shouted as she scanned the room, running to the only undamaged computer, and began typing furiously.

”Hands up or I’ll shoot!” Li Xiaobei, stationed at the entrance, was now captured by reinforcements that had arrived, guns aimed at Luo Ye.

”Alright.” Luo Ye cooperatively raised her hands, standing up, her voice tinged with indescribable joy.
