Rebirth in the 90s: Her Counterattack and Redemption

Chapter 418: Chapter 246: An Unconventional Training (Part 2)

”Reporting to the chief instructor, me too!”

Mo Datong looked at the trainees: ”Who wants to swap partners with them?”

Zhan Hao hesitated, wanting to report, but was glared back by the other party, internally wondering, what trick is the chief instructor playing?

”No one stepping forward? Since that’s the case, let’s stick to the original pairing, Yan Han with Luo Ye, Yu Na with Wu Zetian, Yan Han and Yu Na step forward!”

Luo Ye secretly pouted, it was clear that the plan to pair her with Yan Han was premeditated, and yet here he was pretending to seek opinions, she simply wouldn’t stand out, hmph!

Xing Nong quietly pinched Luo Ye’s fingers, casting a sympathetic glance... In the end, she still ended up with Yan Han.

Luo Ye squeezed back, signaling her to relax, based on her observation, Yan Han was a person who could be managed straightforwardly without too much trouble, not as troublesome as Yu Na had described.

Besides, Yu Na’s personality was also dominant, putting two strong characters together, if they really hit it off, that would be odd indeed.

After the dismissal, a trainee asked about the reason behind this farm learning session, Mo Datong told the truth, after the cemetery incident, Little Zhuzi’s dad and uncles who resisted most fiercely, all received varying degrees of punishment.

Amidst the conflict between tradition and law, it was inevitable that some false rumors spread, and the leaders hoped that through such activities, ordinary people would understand that the army is always the people’s army.

Being too far from the main force, naturally, the trainee team was pushed to the forefront.

Luo Ye and Yan Han went to Grandpa Yuan and Grandma Yuan’s place, the old couple had only one daughter, who married off to a village ten miles away, and only came back to help after finishing her own busy season.

All along the way, Yan Han kept a stern face without uttering a word, Luo Ye looked at him and didn’t bother to speak either.

The low adobe house, the not so spacious courtyard, a bean frame planted along the wall edge had withered leaves, only the structure left standing alone.

In the center of the courtyard was a small pile of corn, chickens and ducks gathered pecking for insects around it, a seventy-something old lady sat peeling corn in front of the pile, this was the scene Luo Ye and Yan Han saw as they arrived at Grandpa Yuan’s home.

Luo Ye stepped forward and asked: ”Grandma Yuan, has Grandpa Yuan gone to the fields?”

”Yes, dear, are you here to help?” The old lady, grinning with just a few teeth left, smiled: ”The loudspeaker just announced that the liberation army is coming to help us old folks harvest crops, I thought it was Li Baosheng fooling around again... Dear, please sit down, the lad too.” The old lady hurriedly found two small stools.

”Grandma, no need to sit, please take us to the fields.” Luo Ye said while picking up two large baskets from the courtyard, handing one to Yan Han: ”Let’s use these to carry the corn back.”

The old lady’s head shook like a bobblehead doll: ”No need, no need, dear girl, delicate and tender as you are, you can’t do such work, I’ve never seen such a pretty girl before, even prettier than the Lanzi in our village.” Perhaps feeling she was neglecting Yan Han, she quickly added: ”The lad is good-looking too, robust, clearly energetic!”

Luo Ye quickly said: ”Grandma Yuan, we came here to work, if we sit here chatting, that would be breaking the rules, please lead us there.”

”Really going?” The old lady’s cloudy eyes showed delight; obviously, having someone help her husband was something she was extremely happy and eager for.

Yan Han grew impatient: ”Grandma Yuan, this is our task, could you please hurry up?”

Luo Ye glared at him disapprovingly, laughing while explaining: ”Grandma Yuan, my comrade here is just headstrong.”

”Alright, alright, I’ll take you there.” The old lady got up quickly, hammering her back before she could straighten up: ”Lad, don’t rush, the old woman is aged, sitting for a while makes my back hurt.”

Halfway there, they encountered Grandpa Yuan carrying a basket of corn back, after some refusal, the corn was transferred onto Yan Han’s back, and after delivering it to the courtyard, the three of them went to the field together.

Grandpa Yuan’s family had a total of one acre and seventy points of land, considering the old couple’s age, the village gave them a plot close to their home, though close, it still took six to seven minutes one way.

Besides corn, there were soybeans and sweet potatoes in the field, Mr. Soybeans had been taken to the threshing ground to sun, now only needed to carry corn and sweet potatoes back.

After three round trips, Luo Ye and Yan Han both began to sweat, the handles of the baskets increasingly pinching painfully against their arms.

Yet the old man, carrying a basket of corn, walked briskly, the two feeling embarrassed to stop and rest, they could only grit their teeth and show off their stamina.

They now understood, this so-called farming help was clearly another form of training, not any lighter than load-carrying cross-country, this thing hanging on the arms really isn’t for humans to endure!

Luo Ye had a cotton wristband given by Ye Xuan, which was convenient and hygienic when wiping sweat by pulling up her sleeve, Yan Han was less fortunate, without a cotton wristband or handkerchief, he could only use his sleeve, and soon enough his face was like a painted cat, itchy, he kept scratching.

Seeing this, Luo Ye took a handkerchief from her pocket and gave it to him: ”Use this.”

”No!” Yan Han stubbornly shook his head.

Luo Ye rolled her eyes: ”It’s not a gift, you have to give it back after using it.”

”No!” Although somewhat tempted, Yan Han ultimately refused.

”Fussy, really inelegant!” Luo Ye directly stuffed the handkerchief into Yan Han’s hand: ”We’re comrades, in critical times we should support each other, why all these fusses?”
