----------------------------

Entering November, rainy and thunderous weather has become extremely rare, but just as everyone is hesitant to make any rash moves, the heavens decide to play a trick – pouring down rain unexpectedly.

At the foot of the mountain, Red Army’s transport vehicles and patrol teams occasionally pass by, so we dare not move too much. We just lie there obediently, getting drenched for over an hour, until the rain stops as darkness falls.

Fortunately, the Division’s meteorological department accurately predicted light to moderate rain for the day. Before departure, Commander Feng Tianzhi issued each student a set of camouflage raincoats, otherwise, it would be uncertain how many of us could have withstood that hour.

”You can move a little now, but don’t stand up. Those who are hungry, hurry up and eat your dinner!” Luo Ye observes the sky and commands softly.

”This damn weather, it’s clearly picking on us!” Jing Feng yells furiously.

”Why are you yelling like that, what are you trying to do?” Luo Ye warns.

Lu Jian turns over, wiping the rain off his face: ”Cold... Freezing to death, I’ve never longed for darkness like I do now.”

Luo Ye, shivering, persuades, ”Just... hold on a little longer, at most ten minutes until it’s pitch dark. A bit of movement and you’ll warm up.”

”Squad... Squad leader, I feel like I’m on fire,” Liang Xiaorao’s faint voice comes through. Ji Sisi quickly touches her forehead, ”Squad leader, she has a fever!” Luo Ye crawls over, touches her forehead: ”So hot!” He thinks for a moment, ”Xiao Ruo, with your current condition, it’s not suitable to continue. Drop out, okay?”

Liang Xiaorao nods weakly: ”Squad leader, I’ll listen to you. Continuing now, I would only be a burden.”

”Fool, we’re not worried about you burdening us, what if the fever causes complications?” Luo Ye looks at the radio operator Liu Xing, ”Contact Eagle; Little Chick is seriously ill and needs rescue.”

”Yes!” Liu Xing adjusts the radio frequency and whispers into the microphone: ”Little Chick calling, Eagle please respond, Little Chick calling, Eagle please respond, Little Chick...”

Yan Han hums discontentedly, ”Why do we get to be the Little Chick? It’s so unsatisfying to hear.”

Luo Ye gives him a glance, a playful smile on his lips, ”From your perspective, the Commander is Little Chick, we’re the Eagles, and that makes you happy?”

Yan Han quickly denies, ”Of course not, it’s just Little Chick seems to lack some intimidation factor. Even Little Eagle would be better.”

Jing Feng chuckles, ”Little Eagle? There’s also Little Flower, Little Ye.” He then realizes Luo Ye’s name includes ’Ye’, and laughs awkwardly, ”Squad leader, I didn’t mean you, definitely not.”

Luo Ye glares at him, ”Enough chattering, everyone hurry up and eat.” He notices Lu Jian has eaten nearly a third of his compressed biscuit and snatches it away, ”Trying to stuff yourself to death?”

Lu Jian rubs his hands, ”It’s so cold, eating a bit helps me warm up. This stuff really doesn’t taste good.”

”If it doesn’t taste good and you still eat that much, if it were delicious, wouldn’t that be a problem?” Luo Ye looks to the others, ”Eat strictly according to the ration, don’t overeat and embarrassingly have to be carried down.”

Lu Jian quickly defends, ”Squad leader, I don’t mean to complain, I wouldn’t eat this stuff if it wasn’t absolutely necessary.”

Luo Ye lifts the biscuit bag he grabbed, ”1/3 is gone, no point in excuses. Hmph, keep the rest and if you’re still hungry, have some water.”

”Squad leader, in about ten minutes, the rescue team will be here,” Liu Xing finishes the call and reports to Luo Ye.

Luo Ye breathes a sigh of relief, ”Good work, eat quickly.” Then turns to the others, ”Once finished, check your equipment. We leave in five minutes.” Noticing that Liang Xiaorao is visibly trembling, Luo Ye reassuringly wraps an arm around her, ”Xiao Ruo, we must leave before the rescue team arrives. Be strong.”

Liang Xiaorao nods with tears, ”Squad leader, I understand. I’m just a little scared, and upset with myself for being so weak.”

”Xiao Ruo, I understand how you feel.” Luo Ye hugs her tighter. In such a dark night, leaving a girl alone on the mountain slope is unavoidable fear, but what can be done if they’re soldiers?

Ji Sisi holds on to Liang Xiaorao’s hand, squeezing it, ”Xiao Ruo, you’re the bravest!”

Li Xiaobei swallows a bite of the biscuit, ”Xiao Ruo, you should be thinking about how tonight you’ll have a warm blanket and hot food to eat, how lucky.”

”I’d rather not,” Liang Xiaorao’s voice quivers with a hint of tears.

Luo Ye slaps Li Xiaobei, ”Little Bei, what kind of nonsense is that?”

”Hehe, it just slipped out,” Li Xiaobei laughs embarrassedly, ”Xiao Ruo, don’t mind me, I’m not good at comforting.”

Luo Ye checks the time, ”Xiao Ruo, we must go now. When you hear the rescue team, don’t forget to turn on the powerful flashlight.”

Liang Xiaorao nods solemnly, ”I know, squad leader, go quickly, don’t let me hold you back.”

”Xiao Ruo, goodbye!”

”Xiao Ruo, goodbye!”

”...”

After bidding farewell to Liang Xiaorao, everyone hastens down the mountain. Using the tall grass under the cover of night as concealment, they successfully traverse the wasteland and enter the mountainous terrain.

Checking the time, it is 2 a.m. Luo Ye stops, ”This dry nook in the mountains is a good resting spot. We’ll rest here until five. Take turns on watch in pairs, one hour each. Liu Xing and I will take the first watch, second watch is Yan Han and Lu Jian, third watch Jing Feng and Ji Sisi.”

”Yes!” Sang Cao is the weakest among the seven, so Luo Ye’s arrangement is reasonable and meets no objection.

...

The quiet hillside at dawn is still and mist-enshrouded, its gentle topographical curves barely visible. Luo Ye, having just woken up from a nap, admires the beautiful scenery before him, and his slightly restless heart gradually calms down.

Ji Sisi walks over: ”Still twenty minutes to go, why aren’t you sleeping?”

”I’m not sleepy anymore, what about you? Are you okay?”

”I’m fine.” Ji Sisi looks over Luo Ye: ”I’ve noticed, you naturally have the qualities of a soldier.”

”Thanks for the compliment.” Luo Ye pulls out a water bottle from his pack and shakes it, sighing, ”Using it to brush my teeth, I really can’t bear to. Forget it, just a mouth rinse, I’ll endure it.”

Ji Sisi points to the left: ”I found a little stream over there, the water’s pretty clean. It should be fine for washing up and brushing teeth.”

”That’s really good news.” Luo Ye stands up happily: ”I won’t wash my face. After washing, I’d still have to apply camouflage. I’ll just go brush my teeth.” He walks a few steps and then turns back to give Ji Sisi a hug: ”You’re so adorable.”

”You,” Ji Sisi shakes her head: ”Sometimes you’re so serious it scares me, other times you’re just like a child. Which one is the real you?”

”Both, both are.” Luo Ye speaks while running off into the distance.

Ji Sisi’s lips bloom with a smile, perhaps, the candid conversation before departure was the most correct thing she’s done.

...

After breakfast, Luo Ye arranges for Yan Han to lead the way with her covering the rear. After a few hours of rest, everyone’s in good spirits, and the pace is relatively fast.

In the afternoon, the group arrives at the river that’s a must-cross toward the Red Army A Division Command Center–Yin Niu River. Soldiers occasionally walking on the distant bridge inform everyone that crossing the bridge is out of the question.

After some deliberation, Luo Ye looks at everyone: ”Looks like we have to continue to stay hidden. It’s impossible to cross the river by swimming during the day. This is a good time for everyone to rest properly.”

”Luoluo, I’m not very good at swimming, what should I do?” Li Xiaobei looks at Luo Ye with a distressed face.

Luo Ye, with a headache, taps his temple: ”Not at all?”

Li Xiaobei smiles awkwardly: ”I can just stay afloat on the surface. I learned to dog paddle from someone when I was a kid. I can only float, can’t move at all.”

Luo Ye breathes a sigh of relief: ”If you can float, it’s manageable. When we cross the river, you just hold onto my backpack strap.”

”Luo Ye, let Li Xiaobei hold onto my backpack strap. You’re a girl, after all, your strength might be less. Besides, even if you’re the squad leader, you can’t shoulder all the problems by yourself. We’re a team; it’s all about coordinated operations and helping each other out, right?”

Luo Ye nods with a smile: ”Alright, Little Bei, you hold onto Liu Xing’s backpack strap, and I’ll push you from behind. Also, if anyone else isn’t good at swimming, speak up in advance to avoid chaos during the crossing.”

”I’m good.”

”I’m good, too.”

”...”

Seeing that everyone indicates there are no problems, Luo Ye is at ease: ”Then let’s stay hidden and rest here, as usual. First watch, Liu Xing and I are on duty.”

”Yes!” After everyone responds, people start to nap on the slope.

Liu Xing leans toward Luo Ye: ”Ye’er, let me tell you a funny little joke about my classmate’s grandma.”

”Sure.” Luo Ye rubs her eyes: ”Lying down like this really makes me sleepy.”

”Last summer, didn’t all our city’s bus drivers change to new uniforms, light blue ones, looking almost like police officers? My classmate’s grandma stayed at home all summer without going out much. As soon as the weather cooled down, she asked my classmate to take her to the seaside for a walk.

My classmate took her out, they boarded bus 223, and the moment my classmate’s grandma got on the bus, she stared at the driver in surprise and asked: ’Comrade officer, are you driving the buses now? How many police officers would it take to cover this? What, all the previous bus drivers quit?’”

”Pfft!” Luo Ye quickly covers her mouth: ”Not bad, not bad. Elderly people can be so adorable sometimes.”

”Yeah, having an elder at home is like having a treasure, ah...”

Luo Ye pats Liu Xing consolingly: ”Thinking of your grandpa?”

”My grandpa...” Liu Xing gives a bitter smile: ”He was really fond of me, but if it weren’t for him, my dad might not have gone down that path.”

Suddenly, an old shepherd comes over the ridge, calling ”mei mei” with his mouth as he looks around. The two immediately stop talking and watch each other cautiously.

Nuan’s first watch has arrived, three watches today; Nuan keeps the promise.

Special thanks to ”Ah Xing girl” for the reward, and to Pink for Nuan, and to the guys who subscribed and rewarded Nuan; love you all.
