Rebirth: The Courtyard Bride Is Cool and Radiant

Chapter 376: Chapter 376 Probing

After all, the little girl had been adopted by the Chu Family and indeed raised like a treasured pearl. They also feared that she wouldn’t want to acknowledge them.

Just as the Ye family had discussed, Shi Jingfang was currently chatting with Yunyi about family matters. ”Yunyi,” she asked, ”if one day your biological parents came looking for you, would you acknowledge them?”

Yunyi swallowed the food in her mouth and, after some thought, replied, ”That would depend on why they didn’t want me back then and why they haven’t found me all these years. Also, I’d have to see if the whole family genuinely wanted to acknowledge me.

”After all, I’ve grown up now, and I’m living quite well without them, so why bother bringing a whole bunch of trouble upon myself by acknowledging them?”

Upon hearing this, Shi Jingfang felt very anxious. What Yunyi said wasn’t wrong. I truly fear that after Yunyi learns the truth, she’ll become estranged from me. After all, if I hadn’t left her side back then, that woman Qin Lijuan wouldn’t have succeeded in her scheme. Yunyi would have been doted on and raised with the love of her parents and brothers. And to think, the little girl was later adopted by the Chu Family... if it weren’t for Chu Yuanzhan and Ding Zhilan, I daren’t imagine the consequences.

Yunyi sensed there was more to Shi Jingfang’s words. Suddenly thinking of something, she probed, ”Aunt Jingfang, why did you suddenly bring these things up?”

Shi Jingfang cleared her throat lightly, masking her expression. Just as she was about to speak, she heard someone shout, ”Yunyi, the director is looking for you! He wants you to go over after you’ve finished eating.”

Shi Jingfang breathed a sigh of relief upon hearing this and quickly changed the subject. ”You should hurry and get going. I also have errands to run this afternoon, so I might not be back tonight.”

Yunyi still felt that Shi Jingfang was acting strangely. However, since the director was looking for me, I’ll put this aside for now.

「Two days later.」

Ye Bingyu and his wife, along with their eldest son Ye Wenhui and second son Ye Wenhao, embarked on a journey to the Northwest to reunite with their kin.

In just a few short days, Xia Dongxue had lost several pounds, which deeply pained Ye Bingyu. ”Dongxue,” he said, his heart aching, ”I know you’re suffering, but you have to take care of your health. Why don’t you lie down and sleep for a while, alright?”

Xia Dongxue had been gazing at the scenery outside the window. Hearing Ye Bingyu’s words, she asked, ”Bingyu, what if she refuses to forgive us and doesn’t want to acknowledge us? What do we do then?”

Ye Bingyu frowned upon hearing her question. ”No matter her attitude, she is our daughter. Whatever the reason we lost her back then, it was our failing as parents. It’s natural for her to be upset.

”I believe our daughter is a reasonable person, someone who knows right from wrong. I also trust that sincerity can move hearts of stone. We just need to give her some time. This isn’t something we can rush.”

Perhaps these words comforted Xia Dongxue’s heart, for after days without closing her eyes, she finally fell asleep in Ye Bingyu’s arms.

Their two sons quickly came over to lend a hand, helping their father make their mother comfortable.

Once they were done, Ye Wenhui whispered, ”It’s a good thing Mom listened to reason. If this had gone on for a few more days, I was really afraid her body wouldn’t have been able to take it.”

Ye Wenhao spoke up, ”Dad, if Little Sister acknowledges us, should we try to find a way to bring her back to Beijing?”

Ye Bingyu looked out the window. ”That will depend on her wishes.”

Though he said that, he felt uneasy. There was a reason for his apprehension. Currently, every family was supposed to send children to the countryside. In their family, because their eldest and second sons were twins, they had graduated high school and, before the Educated Youth Office could mobilize them, one had joined the army, and the other had passed an exam on his own merit to become a junior clerk in a government office. When it was Wen Yue’s turn to graduate from high school, Ye Wenhui had pulled strings to get her a spot in a cultural troupe. Because of this, it wasn’t that no one wanted to cause trouble for them, but they refrained out of respect for the family’s patriarch, so no one spread malicious gossip. However, if they brought Yunyi back to Beijing, he feared some people would undoubtedly step forward to make an issue of it.
