House Dad's Literary Life

Chapter 448: Whose Fault Was It, Anyway?

Mo Henian was also quite tall. Although he was older now and had shrunk a little with age, he was still a little over 1.8 meters tall. The wrinkles on his face weren’t deep, his eyes were full of spirit, and he looked energetic. Combined with his fashionable denim outfit, it was hard to believe that he was nearly sixty years old.

“Grandpa!” Xixi was very happy to see her grandfather and called out excitedly, waving her arms and bouncing with excitement.

Mo Henian glanced at Yang Yi, then coolly nodded at Xixi without saying a word.

“Papa!” Mo Fei slipped back into her Taiwan accent and obediently called out, wanting to go over and support him.

However, Mo Henian waved his hand and snorted coldly, “Alright. Don’t pretend to be attentive. I’m not so old that I can’t walk yet!”

Mo Fei could only stand awkwardly to the side, and Yang Yi hurriedly stepped forward and greeted him, “Dad!”

Mo Fei introduced Yang Yi to Mo Henian. “Dad, this is Yang Yi, Xixi’s father. We’re now…”

“Wait!” Mo Henian raised his hand and glared at Yang Yi, rebuking him, “Who’s your dad? Do you have no shame?”

This was awkward. Yang Yi stood there dumbfounded, not knowing how to respond.

Mo Fei, however, stood up for Yang Yi. She had never suffered such humiliation in Yang Yi’s hometown, so she raised her voice and said unhappily, “Dad! I married Yang Yi. What’s wrong with him calling you Dad?”

“You married him. That was your choice. I never acknowledged that I had this son-in-law!” Mo Henian snorted.

In the end, their ways of thinking were different. Mo Henian also supported free marriage, of course. However, his daughter had married someone without informing him at all, so Mo Henian still harbored a great deal of resentment, which was reflected in his tone.

Just then, Mo Xiaojuan got out of the car and locked it. Seeing the scene, she quickly said, “Uncle, let’s go upstairs and talk. It’s windy out here.”

She also gestured toward Yang Yi and said, “Brother-in-law, what are you still standing there for? Hurry over and help me carry Uncle’s luggage upstairs!”

“Right, let’s go upstairs and talk. Have you eaten yet? I prepared dinner upstairs. Xiaojuan, you should come up and eat something too.” Yang Yi hurriedly put Xixi down, then walked toward the trunk as he spoke.

“No need. I can carry it myself!” Mo Henian said firmly.

However, Xixi “stopped” him at this moment. The little girl pouted and said aggrievedly, “Grandpa, don’t you like Xixi anymore? You won’t even carry Xixi!”

Facing his granddaughter’s sad expression, Mo Henian’s heart softened no matter how hard it was. He bent down and picked Xixi up, saying, “How could that be? Grandpa was just too busy talking…”

From the trunk, Yang Yi lifted Mo Henian’s suitcase. It wasn’t very heavy, and there were probably mostly clothes inside.

“Is there anything else?” Yang Yi asked.

“No.” Mo Xiaojuan’s eyes shifted somewhat evasively.

“Wait! There is!” Mo Henian walked over carrying Xixi and said in a deep voice.

Under Mo Xiaojuan’s helpless gaze, Mo Henian reached into the trunk and rummaged around. To everyone’s surprise, he pulled out a rolling pin about as thick as two fingers. It was neither particularly long nor particularly short, roughly the same size as the steel-pipe weapons seen in gangster movies. Moreover, the rolling pin was made of pear wood. It was heavy and sturdy, and in terms of hardness, it might not even be inferior to a steel pipe!

This…

Mo Xiaojuan looked at Yang Yi, somewhat helpless.

The rolling pin was still wrapped in plastic film along with the shop’s advertisement, making it obvious that it had just been bought! And it was something Mo Henian had bought after asking Mo Xiaojuan to stop beside a supermarket on the roadside on the way here!

Mo Xiaojuan had even wanted to help Yang Yi muddle through it by pretending they had forgotten to take it. In the end, Yang Yi brought this upon himself by asking one more question.

Yang Yi remained silent. He didn’t say anything, simply carrying the suitcase and leading the way ahead.

Mo Henian walked behind them, carrying the rolling pin in one hand and Xixi in his arms. Mo Fei, worried, tried to take the rolling pin from him, but Mo Henian moved it out of her reach and glared at her sternly.

“Grandpa, what’s that?” Xixi finally remembered that she should correct the way she called him1. She looked curiously at the stick in her grandfather’s hand and asked.

“This is a rolling pin!” Mo Henian’s voice softened slightly when he spoke to his granddaughter.

“What’s a rolling pin?” Xixi, of course, didn’t understand.

“Hehe, it’s used to beat bad people!” Mo Henian said meaningfully.

“Dad!” Mo Fei called out angrily. “Yang Yi isn’t a bad person.”

However, Mo Henian didn’t respond.

Only Xixi nodded and said, “My Papa isn’t a bad person.”

Once they were upstairs, Yang Yi brought out the dishes and invited Mo Henian and Mo Xiaojuan over for dinner. In order not to provoke Mo Henian, Yang Yi also addressed him as “Uncle.”

“I’ve eaten!” Mo Henian said indifferently.

“Dad, don’t force yourself. You’ve been on the plane for so long, so have something to eat, okay? Yang Yi specially made it for you. I’ll get you some rice.” Mo Fei was still concerned about her father and tried to persuade him.

“Yes, Uncle, please have a little. At least fill your stomach, and try some of my cooking too.” Yang Yi also tried to persuade him.

“Yours? Hmph, I can’t eat it!” Mo Henian still had a deep prejudice against Yang Yi, and he didn’t spare him any face with his words.

Yang Yi naturally didn’t take it to heart. He still tried his best to win him over, but now that he had been rebuffed, he didn’t know how to respond.

“I’ll eat! I’m starving!” Seeing this, Mo Xiaojuan quickly stepped in to smooth things over. She served herself a bowl of rice and started eating it with gusto, looking as though she found it very delicious.

Xixi was very sensible. At this moment, she ran over, took her grandfather’s hand, and said, “Grandpa, the food my Papa makes is really super delicious! I’m not lying to you!”

Mo Henian, however, shook his head. The old man had his own stubbornness.

With Xixi here, he couldn’t really lose his temper yet, so he continued to suppress the anger in his heart. He had been holding it in for more than five years. Could a few more minutes really matter?

Of course they mattered!

The rolling pin in Mo Henian’s hand had never been put down.

“Dad, can I talk to you alone for a few minutes?” Although Mo Fei asked in a questioning tone, she still pulled Mo Henian into the study without waiting for his answer.

Mo Henian didn’t resist. He frowned as he walked into the study. Before Mo Fei could say anything, he raised his hand and snorted, “Whatever you say is useless. Don’t plead for him. No matter how much you say, in my eyes, he’s still a scumbag! I can tell you clearly, Feifei, your father does not approve of your marriage!”

“Yes, your wings have grown strong now, and I can’t control you anymore. If you want to get married or have children, I can’t stop you either. But I will never accept this man as my son-in-law, Mo Henian’s son-in-law!”

As if venting his anger, Mo Henian became increasingly furious as he spoke.

However, Mo Fei wasn’t provoked by her father’s harsh words. Instead, she calmly waited for Mo Henian to finish speaking before slowly saying, “Dad! I know why you’ve always held such a deep prejudice against Yang Yi…”

“Prejudice?” Mo Henian was so angry that his beard bristled as he glared.

“Dad! Can you listen to me explain?” Mo Fei said softly.

“Go ahead!” Mo Henian waved his hand and said irritably.

“My relationship with Yang Yi isn’t what you think!” Mo Fei said. “When I became pregnant back then and returned to America, he had no idea about it at all.”

Mo Henian scoffed. “Don’t try to fool me with that. Even if he didn’t know you were pregnant when he was with you, when you suddenly disappeared, wouldn’t he have come looking for you?”

“That’s not what happened. We weren’t together. My pregnancy was just an accident.” Mo Fei tried to explain. As she spoke about what had happened, she felt as though the fear she had once refused to face was being torn open again, and she couldn’t help but shed tears.

“An accident? Between you and him? What kind of man plays around like that? If he isn’t a scumbag, what is he?” Mo Henian became even angrier. In a fit of rage, he slammed the rolling pin against the table, making a loud bang.

“Dad, it really wasn’t what you think. I… I…” Mo Fei wiped away her tears while choking back sobs as she told her father what had happened that night when the accident occurred.

Although almost all the details had been omitted, Mo Henian still knew the fact that Yang Yi had saved his daughter.

“Something that serious happened. Why didn’t you tell your family?” Mo Henian asked angrily.

Mo Fei could only sob. She didn’t know how to answer.

She had originally intended to keep this kind of thing buried in her heart for the rest of her life. How could she possibly mention it to her family?

“I think that kid didn’t have good intentions even when he saved you. He just made you jump from one pit of fire into another!” Mo Henian still held a deep prejudice against Yang Yi.

“No, no. This was what I wanted, Dad. Don’t blame him.” Mo Fei grabbed Mo Henian’s hand with a tearful voice and pleaded.

“Then let me ask you this. Since something like this happened, why didn’t he contact you afterward? You two were like strangers, without any contact at all. Even when you became pregnant, you didn’t know how to find him and tell him?” Mo Henian seized on the key point. He slapped the table and asked angrily.

“This…” Mo Fei was stunned.

She really hadn’t thought about this question before, so naturally, she hadn’t prepared an answer for Yang Yi either. But it also seemed like an unanswerable question, and she had no way to defend Yang Yi.

“Wasn’t he also someone who got involved with you and then abandoned you? I called him a scumbag. Was I really wrong?” Mo Henian said with a gloomy face.

“No, Dad. Yang Yi didn’t do anything wrong. He really didn’t know. If you have to blame someone, blame me. If you want to hit someone, hit me instead, okay?” Mo Fei sobbed sadly. “It’s all because I didn’t explain everything to you before and let you misunderstand him.”

Mo Fei was deeply helpless at this moment. She had thought that if she took all the responsibility upon herself, her father would stop being angry at Yang Yi. But she had still underestimated the resentment Mo Henian had accumulated toward Yang Yi over the years.

However, at this moment, there was a knock on the study door.
