Holding Their Own Space, the Family Returns to the Apocalypse

122: The Devil Frog eventually set its sights on the safety tower.”Jing Xi, why?” Ai Yue, lying on the bed, covered her eyes with one hand and murmured to herself... The sudden appearance of the Devil Frog instantly shattered the delicate balance between humans and the Plague of Insects in the Apocalypse.

The Devil Frog acted like a ruthless butcher, targeting any living creature it saw—whether large or small, human, animal, or Ancient Centipede. Once spotted, it would leap, extend its long tongue to ensnare the target, and retract it into its belly with lightning speed, leaving no time for reaction.

For a time, the Devil Frog’s combat prowess was unmatched.

Currently, the Devil Frog was not attacking human bases but was instead focusing on capturing Ancient Centipedes in the outskirts.

The Ancient Centipedes, unable to withstand the Devil Frog, retreated underground. Lacking the ability to burrow, the Devil Frog soon found it difficult to catch them easily.

Unable to deal with the Ancient Centipedes, the Devil Frog turned its attention to humans, who seemed like tiny morsels in comparison.

After accidentally consuming humans wandering outside the Safety Tower, it suddenly made the once-tasty Ancient Centipedes seem bland in comparison.

Those two-legged creatures with little meat had a truly exquisite flavor!

Devil Frogs that had tasted humans would hop around daily, diligently searching for humans outside the towers.

Humans weren’t foolish either; knowing the Devil Frog was not to be trifled with and that a single misstep could lead to being eaten, they cleverly hid themselves after the initial panic.

The Devil Frog excelled in many areas but had a poor sense of smell, so as long as people hid intentionally, it couldn’t find them.

Unable to locate humans outside the bases, they finally set their sights on the Safety Towers where large numbers of humans gathered.

Yingjin Safety Tower.

”Young General, it’s bad—those giant toads are heading toward our base.”

At this moment, Yan Li, shedding his usual maturity and composure, forcefully pushed open the door of the Command Center and spoke anxiously.

”Those beasts are really coming?” Mo Li, who had been somewhat nonchalant, sprang up from the sofa in an instant and exclaimed loudly.

”Yes, the Ancient Centipedes in the outskirts have vanished without a trace, and hundreds of giant toads are tearing at the electric fence on the wall.”

Yan Li witnessed with his own eyes as the giant toads extended their barbed tongues, striking the electric fence repeatedly, causing it to undulate with each hit.

Fortunately, the electric fence surrounding the base was specially treated, making it exceptionally sturdy and difficult to breach.

For now, it could still hold back the Devil Frog.

”Prepare the troops, set the voltage to maximum power, and time it right to electrocute them—see if we can kill them!” Gu Xiheng said with a calm and steady tone, devoid of any fluctuation.

”Yes.”

Seeing Gu Xiheng’s composure, Yan Li, who had been extremely anxious, also calmed his inner turmoil.

The group left the Command Center one after another and headed to the Watchtower.

Following Gu Xiheng’s orders, the soldiers in charge of the electric fence timed it perfectly and activated the power. Instantly, thirty to forty Devil Frogs had their tongues stuck to the fence, sizzling loudly. Within moments, the air carried the scent of roasted meat.

The remaining Devil Frogs, seeing this scene, quickly leaped backward.

The dozens of Devil Frogs electrocuted on the spot convulsed violently, their tongues severed by the electricity, before collapsing to the ground, motionless.

Everyone felt a surge of joy at the sight before them.

Yan Li said happily, ”Young General, it seems these giant toads aren’t that formidable after all. A little electrocution kills them—much easier to deal with than the Ancient Centipedes.”

But Gu Xiheng wasn’t as optimistic or cheerful.

If these giant toads were easy to handle, why would the Ancient Centipedes flee in droves?

This indicated they were far more complex than they appeared on the surface.

Sure enough, after a while, the dozens of giant toads that should have been electrocuted stood up again, shaking off as if nothing had happened.

”Heavens, they... they’re not dead?” Yan Li exclaimed in disbelief at the bewildering scene before him.

The revived Devil Frogs launched another attack on the electric fence.

”Young General, am I seeing things? Their tongues...” Yan Li stared in shock at the Devil Frogs moving freely, with no missing tongues, arms, or legs, his eyes filled with incredulity.

It wasn’t just him; anyone who witnessed this was utterly astonished.

Gu Xiheng’s face unconsciously grew exceptionally grave—the Devil Frog’s tongues could regenerate!

Severed, they could quickly grow back—utterly overpowered!

The Devil Frog’s tongue was its weapon; with it intact, they were invincible.

This discovery weighed heavily on everyone’s hearts.

No wonder the Ancient Centipedes retreated—once ensnared by that massive tongue, escape was impossible.

The scattered Devil Frogs regrouped, realizing the electric fence on the wall posed no real threat to them.

Thus, they became even more brazen, with hundreds of Devil Frogs simultaneously extending their barbed long tongues to strike at the wall and the electric fence.

With a ”boom,” the wall was covered in densely packed small pits, scraped open by the knife-like barbs on the Devil Frogs’ long tongues.

”Xiheng, these giant toads are formidable. Do you have any countermeasures?” Mo Li set aside his playful demeanor and asked with a serious expression.

”These creatures are incredibly tough all over, like a turtle shell, with almost no weaknesses.

I don’t understand this species well, so I don’t have a solid strategy. We’ll have to take it one step at a time.” Gu Xiheng said without much expression.

”Where do you think such huge creatures came from? Could they also be from deep within the Earth’s crust?” Mo Li asked, full of confusion.

Gu Xiheng shook his head, ”Probably not. Based on their habits, they can’t burrow underground, so it’s unlikely they climbed up from below.”

”Xiheng, the world is getting stranger and stranger! First, there were all sorts of natural disasters, and now, all kinds of monsters—it’s like the main goal is to exterminate humanity.” Mo Li stretched out his hand and sighed.

Gu Xiheng was speechless at his cousin’s attitude. At a time like this, with giant toads attacking, he was here sighing about the world.

”Enough. No matter how the world changes, we must find a way to survive.” After saying this, Gu Xiheng left the Watchtower and headed to the Front Lines.

Gu Xiheng led the Ability Warriors into the attack, while Mo Li positioned himself beside him, using his Wind-based Superpower to assist.

The fire, fueled by the wind, spread like wildfire, sweeping fiercely toward the Devil Frogs.

Simultaneously, other Ability Warriors launched their attacks, with colorful Superpowers striking the Devil Frogs’ bodies.

What was despairing was that no matter how powerful the Superpower attacks were, they had no effect on the Devil Frogs.

Seeing so many humans in their sight, the Devil Frogs grew excited and attacked even more fiercely.

Some Devil Frogs, unable to resist the temptation, directly flung their long tongues toward the crowd.

Fortunately, they were blocked by the wall and the specially-made electric fence. Otherwise, without effective human attacks for now, many would have perished.
