This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

”Doctor Du, you’re here.”

As the voice sounded, Du Heng clearly saw the person who had spoken. It was Director Wu from the Traditional Chinese Medicine Internal Medicine Department, and by his side was a tall, skinny man with a gloomy face.

Du Heng suppressed his urge to respond to Cao Binghe and the others, greeting Director Wu instead. ”Hello, Director Wu.”

As Director Wu nodded and shook hands with Du Heng, the tall, skinny man by his side suddenly interjected, ”So this is the Doctor Du everyone has been eagerly anticipating. You really are young.”

Du Heng didn’t know who this person was or what he meant by his words, but judging by his gloomy expression, he sensed it wasn’t anything good.

But because he didn’t know him, Du Heng didn’t want to engage with him.

However, Director Wu, who was present, knew him and quickly made the introductions.

Du Heng glanced up and politely greeted this Director Qian.

Unexpectedly, Director Qian seemed relentless. ”Doctor Du, you look very young. How many classic texts of traditional Chinese medicine have you read?”

Du Heng narrowed his eyes.

He had come to the Capital this time to work, and he was pressed for time; he hadn’t come to make friends, especially not with doctors of Western medicine.

”Not only do I look young, I am genuinely young. It’s only been a few months since my thirtieth birthday.” Du Heng suddenly grinned. ”As for medical texts, I’ve read a great many, so many that I can hardly recall them all. Is Director Qian planning to test me on behalf of my Teacher?”

Director Qian’s expression changed dramatically.

He hadn’t expected that a young man from such a remote backwater wouldn’t be submissive, but would actually be so confrontational. Where did he get such confidence? Wasn’t he afraid of being driven out of the Capital?

Director Qian already harbored resentment, and now, being provoked by a young man like Du Heng, he began to get riled up.

”Young man, watch your tone.”

”Are you going to teach me how to speak too?”

At this moment, Du Heng truly no longer possessed the same mindset he’d had in Jinzhou.

In Jinzhou, he had to be more considerate, since everyone had to interact daily. But here, he was in no such mood. He had never intended to stay in the Capital for long. So, if others respected him, he’d respect them back. If someone wanted to put on airs and give him a hard time, his response was simple: not accepted. Why should he indulge them? Worst case, he could just return to Jinzhou.

Besides, from the afternoon until now, he hadn’t had a moment’s rest. He’d come straight to the hospital after getting off the plane and hadn’t even had a sip of water. He was already feeling quite irritable; if someone insisted on provoking him, they couldn’t blame him for reacting.

Seeing the sharp turn in the conversation between the two, Director Wu felt a headache coming on.

He could understand Director Qian’s feelings. As a director in a renowned hospital, it was natural for him to have considerable pride and arrogance. But this time, first the senior experts from Western medicine took charge, and then several great masters of traditional Chinese medicine worked on the case, completely disregarding his role as Department Director. So, it was understandable that he was resentful and spoke harshly.

As for Du Heng, he was young and clearly formidable. From what Director Wu understood, Du Heng was definitely a significant figure in Jinzhou. Moreover, his reputation online and in the Capital itself wasn’t insignificant either. For such talented young people to be proud was quite normal.

”Director Qian, Doctor Du has traveled a long way and is a bit tired. Please don’t mind him.” He then turned to Du Heng. ”Doctor Du, Director Qian is also very worried about our Teacher’s condition and is a little anxious. Please don’t take it personally.”

Du Heng wasn’t concerned with Director Wu’s attempts to smooth things over. Of course, confronting Director Qian hadn’t been his original intention either. So, if someone mediated, he was indifferent. As long as they didn’t provoke him again, there would be no problem.

Meanwhile, Section Chief Lan couldn’t help but observe Du Heng and Director Qian more closely.

He hadn’t expected Du Heng to be so assertive. In his mind, a young man from the Northwest trying to establish himself in the Capital should be humble, or at least keep a low profile. But he hadn’t anticipated Du Heng being so tough, not giving Director Qian any face at all. Could his own father be the source of Du Heng’s unbridled confidence?

Similarly, if even Director Wu could understand Director Qian’s provocations, then Section Chief Lan, with his greater experience, certainly could as well.

So, his opinion of Director Qian soured slightly. Recalling how Director Qian had adamantly recommended surgery for his father that afternoon, regardless of whether the old man could withstand it, turned that slight negative impression into distinct dissatisfaction.

However, he was a man of considerable self-control. He knew that if Du Heng failed, his father’s life might still depend on Director Qian. Therefore, Section Chief Lan impassively turned his gaze back to Du Heng. ”Doctor Du,” he asked, ”you’ve reviewed the previous records. Is there anything you can do for my father’s condition?”

Hearing Section Chief Lan’s question, Director Wu felt slightly relieved and also asked, ”Doctor Du, what is your diagnosis for our Teacher?”

Du Heng, no longer dwelling on Director Qian beside him, addressed them both, ”My diagnosis is essentially consistent with the one in this treatment record.”

”Consistent?” Director Wu and Section Chief Lan frowned simultaneously.

At this, Director Qian, who was standing by, couldn’t help but interject again, ”Young man, we brought you all this way not for you to simply echo the diagnostic results of your predecessors. You need to present something of your own.”
