This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

After exchanging pleasantries, Leader Bai began today’s main topic, ”President Du, two months ago, we received a report from the public and arrested a group led by Ren, who specialized in medical extortion.

After two months of investigation and evidence collection, we have now obtained detailed and comprehensive evidence of their crimes.

During the interrogations, it was discovered that this criminal gang had also extorted your clinic once.

That is the main reason for our visit today.”

Du Heng looked thoughtfully at Leader Bai, somewhat doubtful about the tip-off he mentioned. It’s a bit too coincidental that the day after Wu Shengnan consulted him about the matter, they were all taken away. Moreover, isn’t it a bit of an overkill for them to be involved in just a medical troublemaker case? However, some things are better left unsaid. A tacit understanding is enough.

This also gave Du Heng a shocking realization about the so-called ”connections” he had. It is very different from the small-town connections he had in Zhonghu Health Center.

”According to Ren’s confession, they extorted your clinic on October 12th this year for 100,000 yuan, is that correct?”

Du Heng shook his head, ”No, they said it was 1,000,000 yuan or maybe 1.5 million yuan. I don’t remember exactly, but it was definitely over a million yuan. However, other leaders from our clinic were present at the time, and they might remember the exact amount.”

Leader Bai nodded, ”Alright, we will collect evidence later.”

He then asked many more questions, which Du Heng answered one by one.

In the end, Du Heng could not help asking, ”Leader Bai, how did you determine that they were extortionists?”

Leader Bai looked at Du Heng and smiled, ”Well, we’re still in the middle of the case, so I can’t disclose a lot of information. If you’re interested, you can attend the trial and listen to it yourself when it happens. However, regarding the case involving your clinic, I can give you a brief overview.”

”Thank you for clearing that up, Leader Bai.”

”You’re welcome, it’s my duty.”

Leader Bai smiled again and then continued with a serious expression, ”After learning about the case involving your clinic, we found the deceased child’s father and mother based on the information provided by the gang. First, Ren approached Fan, asking Fan to testify and share the compensation fifty-fifty. Later, he changed it to notoginseng, but Fan refused each time. Then Ren proposed to display the child’s body at the clinic entrance or conduct an autopsy for evidence. Again, Fan refused.”

What a scumbag!

Du Heng took a deep breath and continued to listen carefully to Leader Bai’s following words.

”Unwilling to give up, Ren turned to his sister, the child’s biological mother, and finally convinced her to sign an entrustment letter with a forty-sixty split of the money. Fearing that her brother might renege on the deal, the child’s mother also made Ren sign a guarantee letter. This letter became the key evidence for classifying this as extortion.”

Leader Bai chuckled, ”Actually, it doesn’t matter whether we have that guarantee letter or not. The other cases are enough to establish their guilt.”

Du Heng remained silent for a moment. ”May I ask how much money they made in total using this method? If it’s inappropriate to disclose, never mind.”

”There’s nothing inappropriate about it. Including your case, there are six altogether. The most they got from one family was 820,000 yuan, and the gang took four hundred thousand yuan. The least amount was three hundred thousand yuan, and they took 100,000 yuan.”

Du Heng’s eyes widened slightly, ”They made so much money?”

Leader Bai leaned back, ”What do you think? If it wasn’t profitable, would they be doing such a despicable thing?”

He laughed again and said, ”But they are a team of twelve people, and sometimes they have to hire some ’extras’ to help them, so the money divided among the individual members is not that much. However, rest assured, during the conviction process, the total amount of money involved in the case will be the basis for sentencing, regardless of how much each individual received.”

This was not something Du Heng was too concerned about; his primary questions had been answered, so he wanted to leave.

But before leaving, he asked one last question, ”What will the sentence be for these criminals?”

Without hesitation, Leader Bai replied, ”This extortion gang has a large amount of money involved and some of them have prior convictions. So, the leader will likely get at least three years, and the others at least one year. However, the final decision will be up to the court, and I can only predict based on past experience.”

Du Heng exhaled deeply, ”They deserve it; such people should be severely punished. Leader Bai, thank you for your hard work. Whenever you have time, let me treat you to a meal?”

Leader Bai laughed, ”When do I have time? I’m swamped.”

Although his response sounded like a rejection, he didn’t explicitly refuse.

So Du Heng chuckled, ”There’s no better time than the present. Let’s do it today. I’ll choose the place and send you the location later.”

”That’s not a good idea; I’m still busy with work.”

”Come on, can you ever finish work? As soon as this case is done, the next one is already lined up,” Du Heng said with a smile. ”It’s important to take breaks and balance work and relaxation. This way, you can work better. Besides, it’s just a meal. Don’t you usually eat when you’re working?

Let’s agree on this. I’ll choose the place and send you the location.

Also, I can’t drink; one glass and I’m down. To avoid dampening the mood, I’ll invite my brother-in-law as well. He can drink and will keep you company.”

”A little drink is fine, but don’t get too drunk.”

Du Heng laughed out loud, exchanged some lighthearted remarks, and then took his leave.

Leader Bai’s intentions became clear to Du Heng after he had asked all those questions. Otherwise, with the people already arrested, were those questions even necessary? And for a team leader to personally ask those questions, that seemed even more unnecessary, right? Moreover, they resolved this matter the day after Wu Shengnan informed them and only told him today after everything was settled. This was a huge show of respect, one Du Heng couldn’t ignore.

After leaving Leader Bai’s office, Du Heng returned to his car and called his brother-in-law to express his gratitude. He also explained the situation in detail.

His brother-in-law didn’t hesitate and agreed right away. He even took over the responsibility of booking the restaurant.

As Du Heng had guessed, the dinner that night was a joyous occasion for everyone involved. The trial for Ren’s case began on the second workday after New Year’s Day.

In other words, by the time Leader Bai called Du Heng over, the case had already been transferred and processed.

The final results were similar to what Leader Bai had mentioned.

The most severe sentence was four years and three months.
