This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

”Moreover, that doctor and hospital had handled dozens of such patients. What’s truly horrifying is that the doctor is only in his forties or early fifties. If he hadn’t been exposed, he would have had at least another fifteen to twenty years of practice. Think about it, would such a doctor dare to issue such a medical certificate? Would he dare to let a third-party organization, especially one preparing to pay, verify that certificate?”

Liao Quansheng fell silent. He had seen bad people; he had even been one himself. But the people he knew and the things he had done were worlds apart from what Du Heng was describing. At least the things people like me did were only relatively bad. But those sanctimonious scumbags... they could be called a pack of inhumane beasts.

”Du, you’re a doctor too. How do you think they can be so vile?”

Du Heng sighed. ”Money tempts the heart. Who would do anything if there’s no benefit in it?”

Liao Quansheng shook his head. ”A gentleman may love wealth, but he acquires it through proper means. What they’re doing is utterly conscienceless.”

”Conscienceless? Isn’t that putting it mildly?” Du Heng sneered. ”Given what’s been exposed, can ’conscienceless’ even begin to cover it? This kind of behavior is absolutely appalling; it shatters the very limits of human comprehension.”

Liao Quansheng leaned back and said slowly, ”Well, I’ve certainly learned something today. But tell me, how could they be so audacious? Weren’t they afraid of being discovered? And how could the Hospital remain unaware for so long?”

Du Heng glanced at Liao Quansheng. ”You’re just playing dumb. Do you really need to ask me those two questions? First, about being discovered: by whom? And how? When it comes to treatment, doctors hold absolute authority. Besides, he’s a renowned Director at a nationally famous Hospital. Who do you think would question him? The patients?”

Du Heng chuckled contemptuously. ”When patients learn they have Cancer, they’re already scared to death. And when it’s such a famous expert Doctor, would they dare to question him?”

With another cold laugh, Du Heng continued, ”For it to take this long to be exposed... a Department with so many doctors, plus chemotherapy and radiotherapy aren’t even handled by the same Department. Do you really think one person could orchestrate all of this? That’s a joke.”

Liao Quansheng also curled his lip. ”You’re not wrong there. Experts are supposed to represent professionalism, but many so-called experts nowadays... *heh*... they’re the ones doing the most unconscionable things. I think the more educated and cultured people are, the more appalling their evil deeds can be.”

Du Heng rolled his eyes. ”That’s just stating the obvious. Ordinary people might want to do such things, but would they even have the opportunity? And don’t paint everyone with the same brush. Some experts truly are experts, but others are just trying to make themselves look good. Apart from themselves and their teams, who else calls them ’expert’? Besides, what kind of person shamelessly tells others, ’I’m an expert, you should believe me’? So, you need to distinguish between charlatans and genuine experts. Don’t make such sweeping generalizations.”

Liao Quansheng gave a bitter laugh, then shook his head. ”Alright, we’ve gotten sidetracked. Just tell me, what’s our plan for this?”

Du Heng sighed. ”We’ll have to take it slow. We can’t skip any part of the process; it’s not like our money grows on trees.”

Liao Quansheng shrugged. ”Then don’t complain about how slowly the money is being spent.”

”I won’t.”

”By the way, an online fundraising platform approached us about a partnership. They claim to have many patients in need of assistance.”

Du Heng looked at Liao Quansheng and asked in return, ”And what are your thoughts on that?”

Liao Quansheng suddenly grinned. ”I told them to get lost.”

”Then why even mention it to me?”

”I was just worried you might want to cooperate with them.”

Du Heng’s eyes widened. ”Am I crazy? If we give it to them, how much would actually reach the patients? Where would the rest go? Could they account for it clearly, or could we investigate it thoroughly? Never mind whether they’d even let us audit them. Take today, for example: our 150,000 yuan expenditure involved five patients, and look how many people from our three parties are auditing the accounts! If you put that on their massive scale, even if they let you investigate, could you ever get to the bottom of it? I’d be better off just giving them the money directly; at least I might earn some goodwill that way. If we partnered up, they’d make all the money and then be laughing behind our backs, calling us a couple of idiots.”

Du Heng was about to continue, but the ringing of the mobile phone in his pocket interrupted him, forcing him to stop.

He had initially planned to check who it was and hang up if it wasn’t important. But when he took out his mobile phone, he saw the call was from the Capital—it was Cao Binghe.

He had no choice; Du Heng had to answer.

However, as the call progressed, Du Heng’s expression grew increasingly grave.

”What’s wrong?” Liao Quansheng asked, his brow furrowed.

Du Heng stood up abruptly. ”Something’s come up. I need to go to the Capital immediately.”

As he spoke, he rose and started walking out. ”Oh, could you do me a favor and check if there are any flights to the Capital this afternoon or evening? If there are, book one for me. If not, book me a high-speed rail ticket instead.”

”Is it that urgent?”

”Extremely. It’s a matter of life and death.”

Seeing Du Heng about to disappear, Liao Quansheng quickly called out again, ”What about settling the accounts for you?”

”You all handle it; I trust you.” With that, Du Heng made to leave again.

”It requires your signature!”

”I’ll have my wife sign for me.”

This time, as his voice faded, Du Heng had already disappeared into the elevator hall.
