This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

For Du Heng, the Criminal Police Brigade was not an unfamiliar place; in fact, he was quite familiar with it. He was especially familiar with their First Brigade, Wu Shengnan’s team, which was primarily responsible for homicide cases. Moreover, recently, whenever Wu Shengnan was working, Du Heng would be at the detachment’s entrance every morning and evening. Because of this, Leader Zhang of the First Brigade had even obtained a pass for Du Heng’s car, meant to be displayed on the window.

Whether this was out of gratitude for Du Heng, due to his relationship with Wu Shengnan, or in consideration of her background, it was a matter of great prestige for him.

But it was only about prestige, after all.

Du Heng understood propriety and never placed the pass in a conspicuous spot or flaunted it.

Firstly, it was truly unnecessary; he only ever picked up and dropped off Wu Shengnan at the entrance of her workplace and never went inside, so there was no need. Secondly, the pass was very conspicuous. For him, always keeping it in a prominent place wasn’t necessarily a good thing.

However, today, it came in handy.

After parking his car in the detachment’s yard, just as Du Heng was about to ask someone for directions, he saw Wu Shengnan emerging from the building.

Wu Shengnan was now visibly pregnant; even her wide, heavy police uniform couldn’t hide the slight swell of her lower abdomen.

The moment Du Heng saw Wu Shengnan, his heart filled with joy. ”Baby!” he called out affectionately, walking towards her.

Wu Shengnan, who was speaking with someone nearby, paused at the familiar endearment. Seeing Du Heng, a blush crept onto her face.

”Honey, what are you doing here?” Wu Shengnan glanced at the sky, then asked in confusion, ”It’s still a long time before I get off work.”

Just as Wu Shengnan finished speaking, the young man beside her smiled a greeting at Du Heng and then said to Wu Shengnan, ”Leader Wu, I’ll head to the car first.”

Du Heng smiled. ”What are you off to do?”

”I’m going to the detention center to interrogate a suspect.” Wu Shengnan straightened Du Heng’s collar. ”You haven’t said what you’re doing here. Aren’t you working today?”

After hearing Wu Shengnan, Du Heng glanced up at the office building behind her and then said, ”Leader Bai of your Third Brigade asked me to come. He said there’s something to discuss.”

”Leader Bai?” Wu Shengnan frowned slightly. ”What would Leader Bai want with you?”

Du Heng gave Wu Shengnan a peculiar look. ”You really don’t know?”

Seeing Du Heng’s strange, cryptic look, Wu Shengnan was completely bewildered. ”What am I supposed to know?”

”You really don’t know?” Du Heng sounded a bit incredulous. ”Don’t try to fool me.”

”Just tell me. I really don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Seeing that Wu Shengnan didn’t seem to be pretending, Du Heng finally said, ”Do you remember? About two months ago, your brother told you that some troublemakers at my clinic were trying to use a deceased child to extort over a million in compensation?”

Wu Shengnan looked a bit lost.

The nature of her work meant she juggled many tasks daily: investigating and gathering evidence, interrogating suspects, reviewing case files, and attending meetings for her team, the brigade, and the detachment. Unless it directly concerned Du Heng, other matters, if not critically important, wouldn’t stay in her mind for long. So, when Du Heng brought this up, the details were fuzzy, and she couldn’t recall it immediately.

After a moment’s thought, she vaguely remembered something of the sort.

Recalling slowly, she said, ”I have a general impression. That time, my brother said I wasn’t concerned about you, that you were being extorted, and I, your wife, didn’t even seem to care. But extortion isn’t something our team handles, and I’m not very familiar with that area, so I consulted Leader Bai of the Third Brigade, since they handle economic crime cases like this.”

Wu Shengnan frowned again as she continued, ”But we only chatted briefly about it then, and he said he’d look into it. Afterward, you never mentioned it, my brother didn’t bring it up, and neither did Leader Bai. I just assumed it was resolved.”

She then looked at Du Heng suspiciously. ”Are you here today because of this?”

Du Heng nodded gently. ”Yes. Leader Bai said they need to ask me some questions, so he asked me to come over.”

Wu Shengnan thought for a moment. ”Do you want me to go up with you?” she asked, glancing in the direction the young man had gone.

Du Heng smiled and shook his head. ”Why would you come? It’s not like Leader Bai is going to arrest me. Alright, go on with your work. I can go up by myself.”

”Alright then,” Wu Shengnan said. ”If you’re done late, just wait for me at the brigade, and we’ll go home together after work.”

”Hurry now, and be careful,” Du Heng urged.

The two parted ways, and Du Heng followed Wu Shengnan’s directions, eventually finding Leader Bai’s office in the Third Brigade.

Leader Bai, the captain of the Third Brigade, was a thin man who looked chronically malnourished and wore glasses. Compared to the robust, fierce appearance of Leader Zhang from the First Brigade, they were complete opposites.

But his eyes were very bright, very... intense. They held a hint of what people often called wisdom. Every time he looked at me, I would unconsciously start to self-examine, wondering if I had done something wrong that he’d seen.

Although the two were not very familiar, they had met once before. Coupled with Wu Shengnan’s connection, their meeting was quite amicable.
