This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

”Today, we’re here to chat. Once we’re done chatting and ready to leave, I’ll definitely drink that last glass. If I drink now, you all know my alcohol tolerance—I’d be out cold on the spot, and that would just spoil the mood, wouldn’t it?”

Wei Kaida paused, then sullenly sat back down. ”You have a point. But you’d better keep your word and drink that last glass.”

”A gentleman’s word is his bond; I always keep my promises,” Du Heng patted his chest and promised. ”But let me be clear: after I drink it and pass out, you guys are responsible for getting me home.”

”You scoundrel! When have we ever not taken you home when you were drunk?” Wei Kaida retorted, clearly annoyed by Du Heng’s last remark.

Afterwards, the brothers had a great time chatting and drinking. The mood was so convivial that Du Heng ended up having an extra glass—just one, though.

Then, he slept soundly until noon the next day. As for what happened after that second glass, how he got home, or how he ended up in bed, he had absolutely no memory.

Wu Shengnan looked at Du Heng after he got up, an expression of utter disdain on her face. ”Your alcohol tolerance... I’m truly floored. I finally believe that incident last year was genuine drunken madness. But then again, considering your tolerance, resigning was definitely the right choice for you.”

Du Heng rubbed his groggy head, ignoring Wu Shengnan’s teasing. ”Have you finished all your paperwork? You don’t have to go to work anymore?”

”All done. Now I’m just waiting for the departure date. As for work, they’re not assigning me anything at the moment, so I won’t go and be an eyesore. But if I have free time, I can still go and help out.”

Du Heng grunted softly. ”Is there any food?”

”Yes.” Wu Shengnan got up and went to the kitchen, quickly returning with two vegetable dishes and a bowl of noodle soup. ”Hurry up and eat. Liao called you several times, and your Lawyer Zhou also tried to contact you a few times.”

Hearing this, Du Heng slapped his forehead in frustration. ”Drinking really messes things up! I had already arranged to contact them.”

Wu Shengnan chuckled. ”Don’t blame it on the alcohol. Hurry up and eat.”

What could it be if Liao Quansheng and Lawyer Zhou showed up at the same time? Of course, it had to be about auditing the accounts and collecting money.

The first thing the three of them did after meeting was to review the accounts of their fund. Well, it wasn’t so much an inspection as listening to the Foundation’s report. Afterwards, the three parties—Du Heng’s people, Liao Quansheng’s company representatives, and the person in charge of the Foundation—audited the accounts together.

Half an hour later, Lawyer Zhou returned with her team. ”Doctor Du, we’ve finished the audit. There are no problems.” Then, she and her team left with the people from Liao Quansheng’s company.

Du Heng began to look through the documents that had been handed to him. Although he had just heard the report, he still needed to review the written materials, as they were more direct and detailed.

After reviewing the documents, Du Heng couldn’t help but remark, ”This money is being spent rather slowly.”

He and Liao Quansheng had each invested 1,000,000 yuan, establishing the fund with a total of two million yuan. It had been almost half a year, yet only 150,000 yuan had been spent. Are the people in Jinzhou really so wealthy now?

Liao Quansheng coughed lightly and said with a smile, ”No, it’s not slow. Our fund was established quite late, so we didn’t have much time. All things considered, it has only been officially up and running for about three months.”

Recalling the work style in certain workplaces, Du Heng couldn’t help but complain, ”The efficiency is a bit low.”

”Let’s not dwell on that,” Liao Quansheng said, shaking his head gently. ”The second issue is that the number of hospitals and doctors willing to trust and cooperate with us is still limited. Awareness of our fund is still relatively low.”

He paused for a moment before continuing, ”The third point... well, some doctors, I’m truly at a loss for words about them. They find it too troublesome and operate on the principle of ’less trouble is better.’ Even if they see a patient who can’t even afford food, they won’t mention our Foundation.”

Du Heng looked puzzled. ”But we’re doing a good thing. It solves the problem of impoverished families having difficulty accessing medical treatment, and it doesn’t stop the doctors from earning their money. It’s just a matter of saying a few extra words, so why don’t they?”

Liao Quansheng sighed and shook his head. ”Our Foundation’s application process is as follows: First, the patient or their family members submit an application. Then, the attending doctor confirms the medical condition and associated costs. Next, the patient’s local community, street, or village brigade issues a poverty certificate. Finally, after our staff conducts an on-site visit for verification, we can disburse funds to the hospital according to the approved ratios.

”But the thing is, some doctors are afraid of the responsibility and the extra hassle, so they don’t tell the patients. In some cases, patients find out about the Foundation themselves, but then the doctors refuse to issue the necessary medical condition certificates.

”Sigh, I’m speechless now. How can such a good thing be obstructed by these people who aren’t even contributing any money?”

Du Heng closed his eyes and remained silent for a short while, then said softly, ”It’s also possible that they genuinely can’t issue that medical certificate.”

Liao Quansheng’s eyes widened. ”You mean...”

Du Heng nodded. ”It’s possible, and I think the probability is quite high. Didn’t you see the news about that incident at a hospital in the South a while ago? A patient with gastric ulcers was misdiagnosed with gastric cancer. Then came all sorts of anticancer drugs, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. They completely milked the person dry.”
