The Valued Lady is Truly Dominant

Song Ci laughed at Consort Fan for being foolish and oblivious, targeting the Song Family was one thing, but her methods were not sophisticated, always hanging around with some useless allies causing chaos.

Acting as a matchmaker for a royal princess?

Who does she think she is?

In this hall, there is the Empress Dowager and the Empress, both highly qualified to act as matchmakers, yet neither has spoken up, but here she is, bouncing around enthusiastically. Isn’t she foolish?

The marriage of a royal princess is not something easily supported like that, although the world is peaceful today, and the Great Qing is considered a strong nation. Otherwise, royal princesses were nothing but political sacrifices, sent away for diplomatic marriages countless times, history proves it. Some princesses are even less free than noble ladies from powerful families.

The Great Qing doesn’t require princesses for diplomatic marriages, but that doesn’t mean anyone can support a princess’s marriage; it depends on the Emperor’s wishes.

Even for Princess Jiayi, a legitimate princess, the Empress herself couldn’t decide, and it was chosen by the Emperor personally.

Now, Consort Fan says she wants to act as a matchmaker?

Song Ci glanced at the Empress. This one is also capable of enduring, she just held her tea, as if she hadn’t heard anything.

Or maybe, she heard it, and was just enjoying the show.

Consort Fan saw Song Ci remain silent and raised her brows, smiling, ”Why doesn’t Madam say something, are you perhaps looking down on Cheng Yang?”

Such a statement puts a heavy hat of disrespect on her, if even a princess doesn’t catch your eye, does your Song Family want to ascend the heavens?

Without a word from Song Ci, Madam Song rose and curtseyed, smiling, ”Please forgive me, Consort Lady, our Madam is old and slow in speech and actions, in truth...”

”In truth, Princess Cheng Yang is of noble birth, how could our Song Family dare to aim high?” Song Ci followed up, saying, ”Everyone wants to draw good things to their home, welcoming fine daughters-in-law, everyone has this selfishness, our Song Family is no exception, but there’s one thing our Song Family has, and that’s self-awareness. No matter how accomplished my grandson, could he possibly compare with the sons of dragons and phoenixes? A mere child, daring to covet the princess of the Heavenly Family, as for me, I’d be the first to spit on him for being a lazy toad wanting to eat swan meat.”

Princess Anping covered her mouth with a smile and said to Empress Dowager Wang, ”Mother, do listen, what grandmother doesn’t boast about her grandchildren as if they’re heaven-sent, yet only Madam Song would disparage her own grandson!”

Empress Dowager Wang also jested, ”Ah Ci, stop talking, even I must seek justice for Huaiyu!”

Song Ci bowed, sighing, ”Aren’t I speaking the truth? Isn’t the Lady aware of me? I am most intolerant of unrealistic ideas, a marriage to a princess is such a grand affair, I, a crude person, dare not even dream, and must disappoint Consort Fan’s graciousness.”

Consort Fan unwillingly said, ”Madam, you really love to jest. Young Master Song San ranks in the top five of the handsome list, how can he be as you say, so unworthy?”

”The list or whatever, I don’t even look at it, it’s all fake, merely the world’s flattery.”

”But...”

The Empress spoke then, glancing mildly at Consort Fan, warning, ”Consort, matters of Cheng Yang’s marriage are left to the Emperor, we need not comment.”

Consort Fan’s expression shifted several times, murmuring.

Madam Wen seemed a bit flustered, realizing she might have made a mess of things.

Princess Consort Ji glanced around, and seeing Madam Wen’s discomfort, laughed, ”The Empress’s words are true, if Consort Fan is bored, she might as well propose a few good-natured girls for Prince Zhou, to extend the royal lineage. Consort Wen entered a year ago and there’s been no good news, which is unfavorable!”
