I Am Not A Goblin Slayer

More importantly, he felt there was no need to put his teammates in danger.

His teammates didn’t possess extraordinary levels of combat power, nor were their skins thick and tough like his. If an accident occurred, the risks they would face were evidently immense.

The reason he tends to accept this commission is simply a deep-seated instinct telling him that killing a true dragon will greatly benefit him.

He vaguely guessed the source of this intuition.

Since it is his own affair, he does not want to drag his teammates down.

Therefore, facing Ying’s request, even though he felt the other party could possibly aid his actions, he still shook his head.

”Is it an important commission?”

”Yes, I want to go.”

Gauss originally intended to take one step at a time and develop steadily.

But plans cannot keep up with changes. Now that the war between humans and demons is about to reignite, he realized that if he wants to protect those he cares about in the unpredictable future timeline, he must accelerate his grasp of greater power.

He is still too weak, weak enough that a single Jade Realm domain released by the Green Dragon Queen might annihilate him and his companions.

He doesn’t want to entrust the lives of himself and his companions to the elusive protection of others, but the reality is that he must choose to believe in the existence of the mysterious strong person that Matthias Monroe talks about.

This unease will not dissipate; as long as he is insufficiently strong, it will repeatedly return over many years.

Until he becomes strong enough to completely decide the future for himself and his companions.

Upon hearing his sincere tone, Ying remained silent for a long time and ultimately did not persist.

”Then be careful,” Ying said, looking into his eyes.

”Alright.”

Gauss himself actually overlooked one thing, that although telepathic communication isn’t mind-reading, it’s also not direct verbal exchange.

In essence, it’s still a mental signal, so unlike speech, it carries many subtle yet clear messages.

Thus, when he spoke, Ying ”listened” to more.

She heard Gauss’s protection and the subtle anxiety that arose in his heart upon receiving news of the war.

Even though he always appeared effortlessly composed, he also had his weaknesses, his insecurities, even the signs he himself hadn’t detected.

”After I leave, you can wait for me in the city. Monroe agreed not to summon the Red Dragon Team, and once the mission officially begins, I should return in a few days...”

Seeing the group’s silent reaction, Gauss mentioned the Red Dragon Team’s arrangements.

”No, we want to join the battle too.”

Unexpectedly, in contrast to his suggestion, the teammates quickly exchanged glances and shook their heads in refusal.

”Alright then, Gauss, you should focus on the task without worrying about us,” Aaliyah said.

”But...”

”Captain, there’s nothing to worry about. If we unfortunately perish, it only proves our lack of capability,” Serdur added.

”Yes, from the moment I became an adventurer, I was already prepared for death.”

”Isn’t that the mindset every adventurer should have?”

Gauss looked into their eyes, sensing the emotions behind their gaze.

His pupils constricted, a sudden realization flashed in his consciousness.

All along, he seemed to have shouldered the safety and lives of his companions by himself. While this is a form of protection, isn’t it also an extreme arrogance?

He arrogantly believed his companions must rely on him.

Yet, actually, every adventurer, even those who seem cowardly, must have something of greater value in their hearts than life and death. It might be a yearning for wealth and prominence, or a belief in rescuing others, an ambition to dominate others, or other desires. In any case, there is always a reason silently supporting an adventurer to break away from a safe daily life and continue fighting demons.

What is the belief of his teammates?

He seems to have never considered this question.
