The Saint Maddox Odyssey

”GOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Villa score again! 2–0! Deep into first-half stoppage time, and Villa have doubled their advantage!”

”Lavelle! First senior goal of his career, and what timing... Rocher squares it across, and the young Frenchman finishes low into the corner!”

Third bench appearance of the season, and Lavelle had finally broken his duck at first-team level. His first competitive goal in Villa colours.

Thirty-seventh minute, and Peña had gone down injured after a reckless challenge from Sheffield Wednesday’s winger, forcing Lavelle into an earlier appearance than planned.

Wednesday probably hadn’t accounted for what came next; Lavelle, thrown on cold, delivered a genuine sucker punch right before the break, turning a comfortable 1–0 into a considerably less comfortable 2–0.

Villa had actually broken the deadlock early; Okoro, back in the starting eleven, converting a long ball from Whitfield in the seventh minute.

Wednesday hadn’t been without their moments after that, though their finishing let them down repeatedly. Most of their threat came down the right, through their full-back; a real handful even with Saint’s pre-match preparation aimed squarely at containing him.

”Right, lads... every win from here rewrites the record books for this club this season.” If Villa saw this one out, it would mark four straight wins.

Wednesday, crucially, were the closest thing Villa had to a direct rival at this point in the table; separated by a single result. Holding onto their current position meant nothing less than a win today.

Three matches earlier, Villa had been one place off the drop zone, a single point from the bottom three. Three straight wins had pulled them clear into comfortable mid-table; but one slip now could easily undo a chunk of that progress in an afternoon.

”Same instruction as always... watch their right side,” Saint said, eyes on Rocher specifically as he said it.

Rocher’s first two matches back in the side had been genuinely spectacular. This one, so far, had been noticeably quieter, even with an assist to his name at the break.

Saint understood exactly what sat underneath that quiet. Rocher was still, for all his talent, a genuine newcomer to senior professional football, barely a handful of competitive matches into his entire career.

A dip in focus is common enough in any young player finding their feet at this level, and even the eventual greats of this game go through exactly this kind of lull early on. Rocher wasn’t any different in that regard.

But as the player Saint’s whole system was being built around, that inconsistency needed ironing out sooner rather than later. Rocher had to mature into the role fast, whatever his age said on paper.

Rocher understood the message the moment Saint’s gaze found him. Silently, he resolved to answer it properly in the second half; prove, with his feet, that the faith placed in him wasn’t misplaced.

He delivered. Three straight matches with a goal now, and the fifty-ninth minute produced a genuinely brilliant individual moment.

Loach won the ball cleanly off Wednesday’s Brazilian forward, and Villa broke immediately... Loach found Whitfield with the outlet pass.

Whitfield, still riding the same rich vein of form he’d found since his conversation with Saint, spotted Rocher’s run instantly and picked him out. Rocher took the ball and turned straight for Wednesday’s box.

Cassidy, Wednesday’s right-back, wasn’t a bad defender by any means. He was solid enough to slow Rocher’s initial run, but the moment Rocher cut inside, the defensive picture changed entirely.

Gamble, the on-loan centre-back, read the danger early and stepped out to close the gap; genuinely sharp positioning for a young defender still finding his feet at this level. Unfortunately for Sheffield Wednesday, his raw ability wasn’t quite there yet to actually stop what came next.

Rocher shifted his weight, dragged the ball back with a stepover that sent Gamble the wrong way, and cut left instead, clean daylight opening up in front of him.

One touch to set it, and he finished first time.

”GOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! 3–0! Rocher! Absolutely sensational!”

”That’s three goals in three straight matches for Antoine Rocher... the boy is walking away with this whole division’s attention.”

”Genuinely gifted, this one,” Curtis said, unable to hide his admiration. Four matches into first-team football, and Rocher had already established himself as the single name every Villa supporter wanted to talk about.

Just before this match, Villa had finalised Rocher’s new contract terms... a considerable step up from his original deal, reflecting exactly how far his stock had risen in a matter of weeks.

Of the three French signings, Rocher’s had been the last of the trio to get sorted... Lavelle and Rami had both put pen to paper on new terms the week before.

With the scoreline now firmly out of Wednesday’s reach, Saint made his second change of the match, sending Rami on for Alves.

Four matches into his managerial career, and this marked only the second time Rami had featured at all. His first involvement had come against Millwall, and the previous fixture hadn’t called for it.

”Ha... looks like Saint’s already decided this one’s done and dusted,” Curtis observed, watching the substitution.

Wednesday’s manager, Steve Malham, read the same substitution rather differently; and took it, not entirely unreasonably, as something close to an insult.

In quick response, Malham burned through his own remaining changes almost immediately; two strikers and an attacking midfielder all introduced inside a few minutes of each other.

The gamble paid off, in a limited way. Seventy-seventh minute, and Wednesday finally got one back.

The goal came from Marco Pisano, one of the substitutes; and, notably, a player who’d actually come up through Villa’s own academy years earlier before being let go.

The assist came from Wednesday’s left-back, Danny Dossett, arguably their best defender on the day. With Cassidy quiet after Rocher had already given him a torrid afternoon, it was Dossett who carried most of Wednesday’s second-half threat, setting up the goal himself.

3–1 stood as the final score. When the referee blew for full time, Villa had secured an extraordinary fourth consecutive win... the second-longest winning run recorded anywhere in the Championship this season.
