The Saint Maddox Odyssey

”Big story, big story... Frank, you need to see this.”

Callum Reid, a junior reporter at the Midlands Sports Gazette, had grown up ten minutes from Villa Park and had covered the club’s academy setup for the better part of two years, mostly unread outside the immediate area.

Today, like every morning, he was scrolling through the national press to see how the wider football world was covering his own patch.

It’s a strange thing, covering local football for a regional paper; you spend years writing stories nobody outside a twenty-mile radius reads, filing away details that never make it past your own back catalogue. World football’s biggest stories happen somewhere else entirely, and you learn to live with that.

”Wait... Saint Maddox? Thirty-one, and he’s already got the job?” Reid stared at his screen, half-convinced he’d misread it.

He hadn’t. Within minutes, every national outlet he checked was running some version of the same story, and none of them were being kind about it.

Reid wasn’t the only one at the Gazette scrambling to confirm it. Within the hour, half the sports desk was on the phone.

”You’re sure you’ve not had one too many, this early?” Frank Doyle, the paper’s editor, clearly didn’t believe it at first.

”Genuinely not, Frank... Villa’s own site confirms it. Saint Maddox, U21 coach, now first-team manager. It’s everywhere. Sky, the Athletic, talkSPORT, all of it.”

Reid had spent two years covering this exact story from the ground up, long before anyone outside the West Midlands cared. He’d written the first proper piece on Saint’s U21 turnaround back in the autumn, back when it was still a nothing story nobody wanted.

”Your Maddox piece from October... I remember thinking you’d oversold it a bit.” Doyle had been the one editing that original piece, and had trimmed it down at the time, unconvinced it deserved the space Reid wanted to give it.

”Turns out I underdid it, if anything,” Reid said, and there wasn’t much satisfaction in his voice, mostly disbelief.

”Get me the full story. Everything. Where he’s from, how fast the badges came, what actually happened in that first team meeting. If the nationals are running with it this hard, we need the piece that actually knows the man.” Doyle didn’t need convincing twice, once he’d checked Villa’s official site himself.

Doyle wasn’t wrong to move fast. This was the kind of story that outgrows a small regional desk within a day, and by lunchtime, it plainly had. Reid’s phone hadn’t stopped buzzing since the announcement.

Being the reporter who actually knew Saint, who’d watched Rocher and Lavelle develop from nothing under his coaching, put Reid in a strange position. Half of him wanted to write the definitive piece and get proper credit for years of unglamorous groundwork nobody had cared about until now.

The other half; the part of him that had genuinely liked what he’d seen from Saint over two years of covering the academy, worried about what the national press was about to do to him.

Because the coverage wasn’t kind, and it wasn’t going to get kinder overnight. A thirty-one-year-old with barely a few years of coaching experience, walking into a relegation fight, having just walked out of his own unveiling press conference without taking a single question; that was a story built for mockery, and every national outlet knew it.

Reid had watched this exact arc play out before with other regional stories; something genuine and unglamorous, built patiently over years, getting picked up nationally and flattened into a punchline within a single news cycle. He didn’t much like watching it happen to a story he’d actually invested in.

Still, there wasn’t much use resisting it. The story was already out, already spreading well past anything the Gazette could control, and plenty of bigger outlets were about to run their own versions regardless of what Reid wrote.

Saint himself had no particular interest in any of it; not the mockery, not the sudden national attention, not even the fact that a Midlands paper had apparently been covering him seriously for a few years before anyone else bothered. He had bigger, more immediate problems to solve.

Officially, his schedule looked unremarkable: routine training sessions, the usual manager’s business. In practice, there wasn’t a spare hour in his day.

He needed to relearn the first-team squad properly and fast; work out who actually fit his system, and start quietly identifying which players were fully bought in versus which were already planning their exit.

And, in among all of it, he hadn’t forgotten Rocher and Lavelle. Both were central to everything Saint intended to build with this squad.

Rocher especially. A-plus ability, by Scout’s Eye’s reading; genuinely elite for this level of English football. Used properly, he wasn’t just a good player for Villa. He was the single biggest weapon in the entire squad.
