The Saint Maddox Odyssey

”Two days off starting tomorrow.” For any group of players, a proper break is the best reward going.

”Yesss... finally!” With Rocher and Lavelle promoted, training intensity for the rest of the U21 group had ramped up noticeably to cover the gap, and everyone felt it.

They’d earned the break. On the back of this run, Villa’s U21s had turned the league into a formality; ten points clear at the top, and pulling away further by the week.

The previous coaching regime had left the group in decent shape already, to be fair. But since Saint took over, results had gone from decent to something close to untouchable. With form like this, there wasn’t much left to argue about at the top of the table.

There was one obvious caveat, though: all of it depended on Saint staying exactly where he was. Nearly five months in, and he’d become the single most important figure in that setup, full stop.

”Boss wants to see you, apparently.” Just as the players headed for the showers, Saint’s phone buzzed with a call from Sallow.

”What would the chairman want with you?” Cadman couldn’t quite mask his curiosity.

By the time Saint and his squad had made their way back to the dressing room, the first team’s own match had already finished. 1–1 — Villa’s seventh draw in a row. Not a losing streak exactly, but not the form of a team fighting its way clear of trouble either.

Villa had come out unusually aggressive from kickoff, a real departure from Ventham’s normally cautious setup. Villa’s TV commentator, Alan Curtis, hadn’t been able to resist the dig: ”Looks like someone’s getting desperate for a win.”

The change didn’t pay off the way Ventham needed. Villa dominated possession, up around sixty-five percent at one stage, but struggled to turn any of it into a real chance.

Bolton, by contrast, needed just one moment on the counter to go ahead, and did exactly that. The goal knocked the stuffing out of Villa’s momentum completely, and for a stretch, the initiative belonged entirely to the visitors.

It took Loach to drag Villa level; the same centre-back Ventham had brought in the previous summer, surging forward at exactly the right moment, cutting through Bolton’s defensive shape, and finishing from just outside the box.

1–1.

The score held from there, even through a flurry of substitutions from both benches as the match wore on.

Ventham nearly pulled it off anyway. In the eightieth minute, with his final substitution, he sent on a scarred, unmistakable figure wearing number 77.

”Well, well... the debut finally arrives, even if it’s only ten minutes,” Curtis said, audibly delighted.

Curtis wasn’t just calling the game professionally, he was a genuine Villa supporter underneath the commentary booth, and like most of the fanbase, he’d been tracking the U21s’ remarkable run closely.

He wasn’t the only one thrilled. Rocher himself felt something close to disbelief, given how completely Ventham had ignored him up to this point.

Real quality needs more than footwork, it needs the temperament to actually seize a moment when it finally arrives. Rocher had both, and it showed almost immediately: whatever nerves he’d walked on with vanished the second he realised what these ten minutes represented.

”Look at that... genuinely world-class pace, the ball’s practically glued to his feet,” Curtis said, three minutes into Rocher’s debut, watching him glide past a defender.

The pass had come from Daniel Wren, a young midfielder who’d broken into the first-team picture that same week. Rocher took the ball, didn’t break stride, and drove straight at the last defender in his path.

He didn’t look for a teammate first. That instinct, to trust nobody and go alone, was exactly the gap Saint had spent months working to close in training. It hadn’t fully closed yet.

The finish, unfortunately, didn’t match the buildup. Saint had flagged that exact weakness in Rocher’s game for weeks, the composure to actually convert once he’d done the hard part.

He got another chance minutes later. Eighty-fifth minute, another burst through Bolton’s defence, this time tracked down by a young Bolton defender sprinting back to cover.

Rocher’s energy alone had forced Bolton into full retreat for the closing stretch, even without another clean chance to show for it.

Then, deep into stoppage time, Rocher produced the moment of the match.

”Would you look at that... a Marseille roundabout, and I mean genuinely Zidane-calibre,” Curtis said, audibly stunned. That kind of technique rarely showed up in English football at all, let alone from a teenager ten minutes into his senior debut.

Gorgeous on the eye, gutting in the result. Rocher spun clear of his marker and got his shot away; a shot that, by any reasonable measure, should have gone in.

Bolton’s goalkeeper produced the save of the match to keep it out.

”If Ventham had trusted this lad earlier, if he’d had the nerve to give him significant minutes, I genuinely think this result looks different tonight,” Curtis said, real regret in his voice.

No use dwelling on what might have been, and Ventham himself likely never saw it coming, that this exact substitution would end up being the final straw for his own position.

Because Whitlock had watched every second of it from the stands. Ten minutes, and he’d seen enough. If Ventham had shown that kind of courage earlier in the season, trusted his young players sooner, tonight might have gone entirely differently.

The moment for Villa to make a real change had arrived, and Whitlock, whatever else people said about him, had never been short of nerve when a decision actually needed making.

”Derek... I want to meet the young man.” At full time, Whitlock rang Sallow directly.

”Who’s asking?” Saint said it lightly when Sallow relayed the message, but the hand gripping his phone had gone white at the knuckles, betraying exactly how much this moment actually meant to him.

Cadman, watching from across the room, had absolutely no idea what had just landed in Saint’s lap.
