The Saint Maddox Odyssey

Delgado; good pace, good explosiveness, sharp on the ball. Attacks with intent, but reads the game a little blind at times.

Whitmore; lacking in pace or engine, but a genuinely excellent striker of a dead ball. Free-kick specialist.

Conlan; balanced across the board. Textbook box-to-box.

Peña; sharp footwork, comfortable either flank, but defensive positioning needs improvement.

Loach; strong physically, exceptional in the air, finishing ability that wouldn’t look out of place up front. Attacking instinct almost too strong for a centre-back.

Whitfield; genuine touch, real quality on the ball, good range of passing. Work rate a serious concern.

Saint’s notebook. He carried it through every session now, a battered black thing, pausing every so often to jot something down or sketch a shape on the page.

Half of it was his own; formations, patterns of play, ideas for how Villa’s current squad might actually be set up to make the most of what they had. The other half was pure observation: a running record of every player’s habits, strengths, tics, and tells, built up match by match, session by session.

Because of the World Cup that summer, the Championship season had been pushed back to September, which gave Saint longer than usual to watch, record, and refine.

England’s tournament had been a genuine embarrassment; group stage, gone, barely a fight put up, and Whitfield had been part of the squad, though injury had kept him out of most of it.

Whatever contribution England’s management had hoped for from their new club captain never really materialised.

”Is he the coach, or is he actually meant to be playing?” Opposition benches kept doing a double-take during pre-season friendlies; Saint sat quietly on Villa’s bench, notebook in hand, and every so often a rival coaching staff would clock him properly and do a visible double-take.

Fair enough, really. A young British-Chinese face in full coaching kit, clearly barely into his thirties, wasn’t a common sight on any Championship touchline.

Villa’s own supporters, at least, had stopped being surprised a while ago. Word had spread through the fanbase after Saint’s UEFA A Licence made local headlines; the ”Birmingham Mail” had run a piece, ”youngest coach in European football history,” and it had done the rounds among the diehards fast. His friends being fans themselves hadn’t hurt either.

He was still, technically, a Chinese national. He’d lived in England essentially his entire conscious life, long enough now to qualify for British citizenship if he wanted it, but his parents had never let him apply, back when they were still alive to have an opinion on it. China didn’t allow dual nationality, and giving up his birth citizenship had never sat right with either of them.

None of that made the climb to a manager’s job any easier. English football, for all its openness to foreign owners and foreign talent, still ran almost entirely on one pipeline into the manager’s chair: you played, ideally at a decent level, and then, eventually, if the cards fell right, you coached.

The other route existed, Mourinho had proven it, working his way up as a translator and assistant long before Chelsea trusted him with anything. Villas-Boas had done something similar. But those were the exceptions everyone could name precisely because there were so few of them.

Saint knew exactly how long that road usually took. He also knew, with total certainty, that he wasn’t willing to wait the usual amount of time to walk it. Everything he was doing at Villa, right down to the notebook, was aimed at exactly one outcome: making Villa’s supporters know his name, trust his eye, and eventually accept him as something more than Sallow’s thirty-year-old project.

So far, it was working better than he had any right to expect and the local press, oddly enough, had done a fair bit of that work for him without meaning to.

A young, foreign-born coach with a record-setting badge made for an easy story, and even the more skeptical pieces; the ones questioning whether he belonged anywhere near a first-team dugout, put his name in front of more supporters than he could have managed alone.

Five pre-season friendlies before the campaign proper: two wins, three defeats. Not the results anyone wanted, but pre-season form rarely meant much on its own.

What actually worried Saint, watching from the bench with his notebook, was a pattern underneath the results. Villa’s whole attack seemed to live or die entirely on Whitfield’s touch that day.

When Whitfield was sharp, Villa looked genuinely dangerous. When he wasn’t, the whole shape of the team’s attacking play fell apart; no rhythm, no second option, nothing to fall back on. He was the metronome in midfield, the one man Ventham had built the entire system around, and Ventham’s faith in him didn’t waver even when the performances did.

You could see it in the team sheets alone: Whitfield had started all five friendlies, and played the full ninety in three of them. In Ventham’s eyes, evidently, any dip in form was simply residue from the injury, from a wasted summer watching the World Cup from the physio’s table rather than the pitch.

Maybe there was something to that. England’s manager had rated Whitfield highly enough to hand him real responsibility in the buildup to the tournament, injury concerns and all, a proper vote of confidence for a player who’d spent two years mostly out of the picture at his previous club.

Whitfield was thirty now, not old exactly in football playing terms, but not young either in a position that chewed players up fast. This summer’s tournament might well have been his last real shot at a major one. And two years riding the bench at a bigger club, watching younger players get the chances he’d once assumed were his, had clearly taken more out of him than just game time.

Whatever the reason, the Whitfield who’d come home to Villa this summer wasn’t the Whitfield Saint remembered from the academy days. And Ventham, for all his experience, didn’t seem to have noticed the difference yet.

With the friendlies wrapped up and the real season closing in, Villa’s opening fixtures had been reshuffled around the World Cup calendar; a third-round start to the Championship campaign, same as everyone else.

Villa’s first competitive fixture would come against a club sliding quietly, almost sadly, out of the game’s upper reaches after years at the very top: Leeds United, once the pride of the West, now scrapping to stay relevant at all.
